  • Patent number: 7040794
Abstract: A lighting apparatus for a liquid crystal display. The apparatus includes an array of light emitting diodes disposed alongside the liquid crystal display, which illuminate the display. Light pipes transmit the light from the light emitting diodes to the display, which light pipes span across a plane parallel with the liquid crystal display. A filter is disposed between the array and the light pipes for filtering out infra-red light from the light emitting diodes. This apparatus has special applications in the cockpit of an aircraft where the pilot is wearing infra-red light filtering goggles and needs to see outside the aircraft as well as read the instruments. The color of the light emitting diodes may be switched from red, to green to blue, depending upon the type of goggles the pilot is wearing.

  • Patent number: 7040796
Abstract: In a front light, an intermediate light guide protrudes from a light guide plate toward a light emitting element in the direction along a light incident face of the light guide plate. A side face of the intermediate light guide opposing the light incident face serves as an emergent face from which light from the light emitting element is emitted to the light guide plate, and an outer side face remote from the emergent face serves as a reflecting face for reflecting light propagating inside the intermediate light guide. The outer side face of the intermediate light guide is provided with a prism face having a plurality of grooves of wedge-shaped cross section, and a reflective film formed thereon. The prism face is provided distant from an end face of the intermediate light guide close to the light emitting element.

  • Patent number: 7033058
Abstract: A flat display displays images on both sides is disclosed. The flat display includes a liquid crystal molecule layer disposed between two substrates, and a driving array having a plurality of switch devices disposed on one of the substrates. Images are asynchronously displayed on both sides of the flat display by controlling a rotation state of the liquid crystal molecule layer by the driving array in cooperation with a light source provided by a light source module. The light source module includes two light-guiding plates. One of the light-guiding plates is disposed on the substrate having the driving array, and the other light-guiding plate is disposed on the other substrate having a color filter.

  • Patent number: 6976779
Abstract: The liquid crystal display device has red, green, and blue LEDs, each emitting a different color light, as a light source. An acrylic lens is mounted on the emission surface of the LED to change angular distributions of light from the LED. The shape of the acrylic lens varies depending on the color of the LED. The angular distribution of emitting light thereby differs by the color of LED to cancel out wavelength dependency of transmittance at each viewing direction in a liquid crystal panel.
