Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods are provided for using a textured surface of a light guide plate to reduce friction between the light guide plate and an adjacent film. A textured surface across an interior region of the light guide may guide light towards a top surface of the textured light guide. A film positioned on the bottom surface of the textured light guide may reflect light towards the top surface. The film may be positioned within the interior region as a substantially flat (e.g., planar) layer. The surface features may reduce the friction to enable the textured light guide plate and/or film to expand or contract independently from one another due to varying temperatures without forming wrinkles on the film or changing the planarity of the film.

The back plate disposes a reflection layer on an inner surface thereof. The reflection layer and the back plate are integrally formed. A light enters into the light guide plate from a light incident surface of the light guide plate to be projected toward the inner surface of the back plate, then returns to the light guide plate after being reflected by the reflection layer on the inner surface of the light guide plate, and is emitted from a light emitting surface of the light guide plate. The present invention can not be effected by the external influence to cause deformation and other problems, thereby improving the reflection effect.

The elements (2080) that enable TIR may be enabled quickly because of their small size and weight, resulting in a very fast switching speed. The fast switching speed allows colors to be generated and displayed in a sequential manner.

Abstract: By introducing a stack of alternating high and low index dichroic material layers on the exit surface of a waveguide for a wedge type directional backlight, natural reflectivity differences between polarized components can be increased, effectively reflecting the vast proportion of S-polarized light rays, while at the same time transmitting the P-polarized light rays, of light impacting the exit surface of the waveguide at an angle sufficient to exit the waveguide. This recovers polarization in wedge type backlight systems, increasing illumination exiting the waveguide. Also, on the back reflecting surface of the waveguide, a birefringent material can be added to efficiently transform S-polarized reflected light from the dichroic stack, into returning P-polarized light.
