Abstract: The present invention discloses a backlight module and a liquid crystal display (LCD) using the same, which can achieve local dimming. The backlight module includes a light guide plate (LGP), which has a groove formed on a bottom. A cross-section of the groove can be arc-shaped. The backlight module further has a plurality of light sources disposed under the LGP at positions corresponding to the groove. The light sources can be two LED light bars. Light emitted from the light bars enters into the LGP and radiates from the LGP. The present invention does not require so many light sources, and thereby power consumption is reduced. The light sources are disposed under the LGP, so that heat can be dissipated through a back plate of the LCD.

Abstract: An optical film is applied to a side-emitting backlight module. The side-emitting backlight module has a light guide plate for guiding a chief light beam. The light guide plate has a light emitting surface to define a normal direction thereof. The optical film includes a lower prism structure, an intermedium layer, and an upper prism structure. The lower prism structure is disposed on the light emitting surface. The intermedium layer is connected between the lower prism structure and the upper prism structure. When the chief light beam exits from the light emitting surface of the light guide plate, and then goes through the lower prism structure, it goes through the intermedium layer along a changed traveling direction. When the chief light beam exits from the intermedium layer, and goes through the upper prism structure, it turns from the changed traveling direction to the normal direction.

  • Patent number: RE42975
Abstract: The present invention features a system for uniformly distributing luminance and a high degree of collimation from a back light module for flat-panel, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) simultaneously. A constant and uniform luminance output of the back light module in two directions is obtained through appropriate selection of lamps, geometry and optical components. An appropriate balance of lamps, lamp spacing, diffusers and light collimating optics are chosen to produce a high brightness back light module with very high intensity output over two very large surfaces. Variations in intensity over the illuminated area are minimized using light recycling in conjunction with the reflective diffusers and collimating optics. Precision collimators eliminate light beyond a defined angle, as required in tiled or monolithic flat-panel LCDs with predetermined display specifications.
