  • Patent number: 4345842
Abstract: The present invention is a universal blending method for blending the material contents of a silo having a predetermined interior cross-sectional area by layer blending or across vertical columns, column blending, or a combination of layer and column blending. The presently preferred method of the present invention employs either vertical displacement of a partial vertical column of the silo content to provide a representative mixture in every horizontal cross-section in order to reduce the number of necessary recycles to a minimum or substantially simultaneous multilevel displacement, with subsequent uniform discharge over the whole horizontal cross-section of the silo to remix material that may have been segregated during the filling or recycling.

  • Patent number: 4336328
Abstract: An improved silver halide precipitation process of preparing a dispersion of silver halide grains is disclosed. The process comprises forming a radiation-sensitive silver halide dispersion by reacting silver and halide salts in solution within a dispersing medium to form silver halide grain nuclei within the dispersing medium and allowing silver halide grain growth to occur in a reaction vessel in which the silver halide grain nuclei and the dispersing medium are present. The improvement comprises, during silver halide grain growth, withdrawing a portion of the dispersing medium from the reaction vessel through an ultrafiltration membrane while retaining the silver halide grains within the dispersing medium remaining within the reaction vessel.

  • Patent number: 4325641
Abstract: An apparatus for and a method of recycling asphaltic waste shingles. The apparatus includes an elongated conversion tank into which an asphaltic oil, preferably preheated, and shingle tabs are admitted. The shingle tabs are dissociated into substantially liquified and solid shingle materials. The dissociated shingles are agitated with the asphaltic oil to form a slurry which can be drawn off and discharged to a work station. During the agitation, the substantially solid shingle materials are shredded to reduce their size. Preferably, the asphaltic oil is of a higher penetration grade than the asphaltic content of the shingles when in a substantially liquified form.

  • Patent number: 4286883
Abstract: Apparatus for blending bulk particulate solids comprises a distribution chute bin, a cone section having outer and inner cones, and a flow pattern controller outlet device. The solids may be recirculated from the outlet device to the chute bin for additional blending. The chute bin prevents particle size segregation by causing mixing of coarse and fine particles. The inner cone permits mass flow adjacent the outer cone, and also enforces the flow velocity profile imposed at the bottom of the cones to continue to the top of the inner cone. The flow pattern controller is operable to shift between a blending mode resulting from the difference in the velocity profiles within and around the inner cone and a uniform flow mode useful when emptying the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4132483
Abstract: A molding machine for dispensing at least two materials which, when combined, foam and cure within a mold thereby to form a plastic article. The dispensing is accomplished by displacing measured amounts of hydraulic fluid to a pair of chambers within each of which there is located a stainless steel bellows that is supplied with the respective material from a source thereof under pressure. When the displaced hydraulic fluid causes the bellows to collapse, the materials in the bellows are displaced therefrom into a mixing chamber in the form of high velocity jets and are mixed therein and the mixture is forced from the mixing chamber to the mold cavity to be filled. The bellows are then permitted to expand under the pressure of the material supplied thereto and the machine is ready for a further molding cycle.

  • Patent number: 4106117
Abstract: A mixing bowl having an outwardly flared inner surface is rotated around its axis at a speed which is great enough to cause a film of liquid within the bowl to be moved upwardly by centrifugal force to the rim of the bowl. A liquid is introduced into the bottom of the bowl at a rate that permits an unbroken film of liquid to form within the bowl and move from the bottom to the rim. Particulate material is uniformly distributed in a radial direction within the bowl to contact the liquid film and mix therewith. The rim of the bowl is shaped to interact with an adjacent stationary surface to shear the liquid and particulate material mixture to increase the uniformity of the mixture. A basin is positioned around and under the rim of the mixing bowl to collect the mixture as it is thrown off the outer edge of the rim.

  • Patent number: 4087862
Abstract: A bladeless mixing device for use in a mixing system to mix streams of the same or different composition, for example, liquid/liquid, gas/gas, solid/solid, or any combination thereof. In the mixer device streams are tangentially directed into an inlet mixing chamber comprising a convergent conical cavity wherein a converging vortex is created, which is passed through an orifice into an outlet mixing chamber comprising a divergent conical cavity wherein a diverging vortex is developed, which is extracted from the outlet cavity tangentially for subsequent passage through further stages of the mixing system. The streams are combined, separated and recombined several times during the course of their passage through the mixing system which comprises a plurality of stages, until the desired mixing is obtained. The orifice size may be varied, depending upon the extent of mixing and velocity required for thorough mixing of the streams.
