Abstract: An incompletely miscible liquid mixture, e.g. a suspension polymerization mixture, is mixed by flowing through a rotating substantially horizontal tube that is incompletely filled with the mixture, so as to form pairs of vortices each with its axis transverse to the axis of the tube. The apparatus comprises the tube, that must be free of internal means for agitating the liquid within the tube, means for rotating the tube and means for feeding the liquid mixture to and through the tube.
Abstract: A device for the rapid machine composting of sewage sludge including a rotary drum and having a feeding device extending longitudinally of the drum for feeding material to be composted into the drum. Air, heat and moisture are supplied to and discharged from the sludge compost and the composted material is discharged from the drum. A pre-mixing device for the sludge to be composted is located outside the rotary drum and includes a mixing vessel. Material to be composted is delivered to the mixing vessel as is composted sludge from the drum.
Abstract: A treatment apparatus using a walking beam transporter is provided with an indexing mechanism for enabling barrels supported on the beam to be indexed rotationally in use, either in a treatment solution or when raised above it. The drive mechanism comprises a rod extending along the transporter beam and supported in low friction bearings for linear reciprocated movement. The rod is driven by a piston and cylinder assembly housed inside the beam, via a pendulum link. Each barrel is provided with a ratchet and pawl mechanism operated from the rod via a lever link on the barrel mounting.
Abstract: A blender for dental impression materials - alginates and dental stones, for example--is provided with a multispeed electric motor for actuating a turntable through a speed reducing geartrain. The turntable surmounts a substantially rectangular enclosure for the drive components. A handgrip for the user is provided in a narrow end of the enclosure, near a control switch for the drive motor. A flexible rubber bowl is removably mounted on the turntable and receives the materials to be blended. Elastomeric support strips along the base of the enclosure are carried over an angled rear panel of the lower half of the housing, so as to provide nonskid support means as the enclosure is tilted to facilitate the blending process by moving the rotational axis of the bowl away from the vertical.
Abstract: A void cap having a stepped configuration converging to a discharge end enhances blending action by disrupting the sliding action of the materials as they pass along the void cap. Sloped angles at each of the stepped configurations facilitate discharge of material. The void cap is particularly adapted for attachment to one or both ends of steel or fiberboard drum containers thereby changing the total volume of such containers to facilitate addition of materials and/or blending of materials.
Abstract: A sealing assembly for a vacuum connection to a mixing apparatus so that the contents of the mixing apparatus are held under a vacuum during blending and the introduction of particulate matter is substantially reduced. The sealing assembly for the vacuum conduit is provided by means of a separate housing. A vacuum conduit is integrally attached to and rotates with the blender and an end portion of the conduit is sealed by means of bushings and packing in the assembly housing. The sealing assembly can be easily disconnected for maintenance purposes.
Abstract: A method for obtaining vibrational and lateral movement within rotatable receptacles is disclosed. The lateral movement is achieved by the interruption of the simple circular motion of a receptacle by slight projections in the circular path of the receptacles. The interruptions cause the materials within the receptacles to vibrate and move laterally rather than continue in a strict circular path. The interruptions may take the form of studs or projections on the outer circumference of the receptacles being rotated or may take the form of studs or projections located on the means rotating the receptacles. The rotatable receptacles are classically rotated by belts.
Abstract: A heated, variable tilt, rotating container or pot for making possible automatic, continuous mixing or tumbling, with or without simultaneous heating, of a plurality of foods or substances. The device consists of an outer non-rotating shell pivoting on a fixed base. Inside the shell is a pot rotated by a motor attached to the bottom of the shell. A cover is secured over the pot to prevent the contents from spilling out. The shell and its pot are tiltable as a unit to any angular position from vertical to horizontal. Compartments, dividers, ridges, projections or other shapes are inside the rotating pot or on the pot wall and/or bottom, to separate, move, mix and tumble the contents when the tilt angle of the pot is other than at the vertical position. The shell contains a suitable heating system for raising the temperature of the pot. The device is provided with an automatic temperature control, motor speed control and automatic time cycle and function indicators.
Abstract: A method of mixing a composition in the liquid state comprises enclosing the compositin in a tube, locating the tube in tube location means rotatably mounted on a member, spinning the member about a spin axis, and for at least part of the spinning period rotating the tube location means about its own axis of rotation parallel to the spin axis and spaced therefrom, so that the tube is subjected to both spinning and end-to-end rotation.Apparatus for carrying out the method preferably comprises a sun and planet gear assembly which rotates on the spin axis, the tube location means being coupled to planet gear of the assembly so that rotation of the assembly causes the spinning of the tube, and relative rotation between the sun and planet gears causes the end-to-end rotation of the tube.
Abstract: A laundry washing machine which comprises a driven laundry holder rotatably mounted within a separately rotatable driven washing liquid container, the respective axes of rotation of the holder and the container intersecting each other.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing a silver halide emulsion comprised of serially receiving a silver halide emulsion at an upstream location, supplying the silver halide emulsion in a further prepared form at a downstream location, and transporting the silver halide emulsion between the upstream and downstream locations while it is being further prepared. The silver halide emulsion is divided into discrete segments as it is received at the upstream location. The discrete segments of the silver halide emulsion are transported between the upstream and downstream locations in the sequence of their formation. The emulsion can be finished as it is transported to the downstream location. The silver halide grains can be shelled during transport. In still another application a converted-halide emulsion can be formed during transport to the downstream location.
