  • Patent number: 4478516
Abstract: The constituents of a flow of thermoplastics material or the like are mixed and blended by passing the flow through a mixing structure which defines an array of elongate side-by-side passages. The passages are not all alike in that at least some of them have configurations which taper along their lengths to degrees or in directions that differ from the configurations of others of the passages, whereby the flows of fluid which discharge from the differently configured passages do so at differing velocities. As the discharging flows of differing velocities recombine to form a common flow having a uniform velocity, a desirable type of mixing and blending action results. In preferred practice, adjacent ones of the passages are tapered oppositely along their lengths to converge or diverge such that fluid flowing through the converging passages is caused to increase in velocity, while fluid flowing through the diverging passages is caused to diminish in velocity.

  • Patent number: 4154535
Abstract: A one-screw extruder in which the mechanical thrust function is assigned to a first portion of the screw and of the cylinder, and in which the uniform heating of the material to be extruded is the function of a second portion, thus making it possible for each of the two portions to be specialized and to obtain a better performance of the extruder as a whole.

  • Patent number: 4107260
Abstract: Methods are provided for processing expandable thermoplastic materials with a typical compression relief design extruder screw having a helical flight for advancing and working a thermoplastic material. The screw is modified to shorten the feed and compression sections and to include a plurality of force-producing components in at least the compression section of the screw such that at least some portion of the components in any one turn of the flight lie in one plane essentially normal to the axis of rotation of the screw and such that the walls of the flight are uninterrupted. This arrangement controls the location of the rupturing or fragmenting of what is referred to as the solid bed and controls the manner in which it is fragmented to provide an extrudate at a die end of the extruder which has a constant temperature and which is uniform throughout each successive section of the thermoplastic material.

  • Patent number: 4082487
Abstract: The disclosure concerns apparatus which automatically performs screen-changing functions associated with the use of screen devices for filtering extruded plastic materials. The apparatus includes a slide assembly with two apertured recesses for receiving screen devices, and mechanisms for aligning the recesses alternatingly with a direction of advance of the extruded plastic material. A screen device is replaced within one recess, as a screen device within the other recess filters the extruded plastic material. Such screen device replacement is provided through the automatic, sequential operations of screen device ejection, screen device carrier, screen device introducing and screen device reloading mechanisms.

  • Patent number: 4074362
Abstract: A vented injection molding machine adapted to handle a wide variety of synthetic resinous materials without predrying is disclosed. The molding machine includes a two-stage screw rotatably and reciprocably mounted within a barrel. The barrel includes a pair of ends, a feed opening at one end and a vent opening intermediate the pair of ends. A first stage of the screw essentially completes material plastication. The first stage has a protruding helical screw flight with a first pitch and includes a feed section communicating with the feed opening, a transition section, and a pumping section. A second stage of the screw includes a deep flighted vent section which communicates with the vent opening and the first stage pumping section, a short transition section and a relatively short second pumping section. The second stage also includes a protruding helical screw flight having a second pitch which is greater than the first pitch of the first stage.

  • Patent number: 4070138
Abstract: A housing has a threaded bore opening to an inlet and an outlet. The outlet axis is substantially perpendicular to the bore axis while the inlet axis is off-center from the bore axis. A plug in the housing bore comprises three cylindrical portions which are threaded in the housing bore and which are joined together but spaced apart by perforate cylindrical support tubes of lesser diameter than the threaded portions. A screen mesh extends about each support tube. Bores extend radially through two of the threaded cylindrical portions and only one at a time is alignable with the housing outlet, depending upon the threaded position of the plug in the housing bore. Accordingly, molten plastic material enters into the bore from the off-center housing inlet which urges the plastic material around the exterior of the screen to limit clogging and to extend screening life.

  • Patent number: 4065108
Abstract: The charge forming barrel has a screw slidably and rotatably received therein, and the screw is specially suited for successively forming a mottle charge, a valve stud being mounted on the forward end of the screw, and this stud cooperating with a ring shaped non-return valve to close off rearward flow of the plasticized ingredients comprising the charge. The valve closes in a sliding or shearing action which avoids the propensity for such pellets to prevent the full closure of the non-return valve during the period of the cycle where a charge is injected into the mold cavities, and prior to forming of the next succeeding charge.
