    Abstract: A system for compensating RI while reading servo data from a rotating storage medium is provided and includes an equalizer, a Viterbi detector, and a servo control module. The equalizer receives a digital signal including a bit sequence of the servo data read from the rotating storage medium and equalizes the digital signal via filters. Some of the filters are to phase rotate the digital signal to generate phase rotated signals. The Viterbi detector operates based on a Viterbi state machine, which includes main branches having sub-branches, where: each of the main branches is to receive the phase rotated signals respectively at corresponding ones of the sub-branches; and the Viterbi detector is to determine branch metrics for each of the sub-branches, determine a minimum branch metric for each of the main branches, and process the minimum branch metric using an add-compare-select process to determine a most likely received bit sequence.

However, the carrier amplitude can be suppressed simultaneously preventing leakage to the read signal band by converting the carrier frequency into the stop-band of the adaptive equalizer by making the use of aliasing that occurs at the A/D conversion.

    Abstract: The present techniques provide methods and systems for more reliable reading of optical data disks. In embodiments, a multi-pixel detector that is segmented into multiple areas, or detector segments, may be used to detect a pattern in the light reflected from an optical data disk. The pattern may include light scattered from a single bit that may be under a center detector, as well as light scattered from proximate bits. The detector system may then combine the quantized values from each of the detector segments mathematically to determine the presence or absence of a bit or bits of data. The mathematical combination may also use data that is known about the status of adjacent data bits (such as previously read bits, or bit patterns which are allowed or not allowed by specific data encoding schemes) to improve the accuracy of the bit prediction.

    Abstract: An optical disk apparatus includes a generating unit which generates a wobble signal on the basis of a reflected light beam of an optical disk, a multiplying unit which multiplies the wobble signal and an oscillation wave, an integral processing unit which receives a multiplication result of the multiplying unit to integrate the multiplication result, an oscillating unit which generates the oscillation wave whose oscillation frequency is controlled on the basis of integral result of the integral processing unit, and a processing unit which processes information on the optical disk on the basis of the oscillation wave which is of a wobble PLL signal. In the optical disk apparatus of the invention, binarization is not performed unlike the conventional apparatus, and the wobble signal is compared to the oscillation wave in a signal area, so that the wobble PLL signal which is highly resistant to noise following the wobble is obtained.

    Abstract: A signal of a run-length-limited code is reproduced from a recording medium. A transversal filter subjects the reproduced signal to a partial-response waveform equalization responsive to tap coefficients. A delay circuit outputs at least three successive samples of the peak-point information. A temporary decision device operates for calculating a temporary decision value of the equalization-resultant signal on the basis of the successive samples of the peak-point information. A difference between the temporary decision value of the equalization-resultant signal and an actual value thereof is calculated, and an error signal is generated in response to the calculated difference. The tap coefficients of the transversal filter are controlled in response to the error signal so as to minimize the error signal.

    Abstract: A method of pre-processing sampled data prior to estimating the peak amplitude of a pulse includes averaging of two adjacent sample values. Pre-processing makes the peak amplitude estimation less sensitive to the sampling phase relative to the peak position and consequently allows for the use of a lower sampling period relative to the full-width-half-maximum pulse width for a given peak estimation accuracy. The method incorporates a step in which a base line offset signal is subtracted from an estimated peak value, and multiplying the consequent pulse peak amplitude estimate by a predetermined constant in order to compensate for a systematic change in a final peak amplitude estimate. The multiplying constant may have a value derived from estimated peak values of other detected pulses in order to compensate for a systematic change in the peak amplitude estimate.

Zero-crossings are also detected by comparing the differences to a pre-determined negative threshold value when the differences are negative.
