Abstract: A relationship between a length of a pixel formed by an image drawing operation along a disk circumferential direction, and a length of a pit formed by an data recording operation along the disk circumferential direction is set in such a manner that a plurality of pits are entered to the length of 1 pixel along the disk circumferential direction. While one pixel is being drawn by employing the image drawing beam, within such a section that the power of the data recording beam becomes recording power in order to form the pit, the power of the image drawing beam is temporarily lowered to such a power which does not change the visible light characteristic of the image drawing layer.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of maintaining an optimal writing power for various recording modes during data recording onto a recording medium. The present method checks a recording speed at a recording position, reads a write strategy set for the checked recording speed, detects a reflected level while recording data with the read write strategy, and changes a level reference for ROPC according to the detected level. Accordingly, a writing power can be kept most optimal even though a recording speed changes during data recording, thereby improving the quality of reproduced signals.

Abstract: An object of the present invention is to provide an optical recording/reproducing apparatus capable of improving medium usability through a laser power adjusting process while keeping compatibility with a read only type medium. The optical recording/reproducing apparatus adjusts laser power using a PCA till the PCA is used up. After the PCA is used up, an additional area is reserved at the outermost circumference position, thereafter when the additional area is used up, a new additional area is reserved at an inner circumference side of the used up additional area to adjust laser power. The additional area is reserved at an outer circumference than a lead-out area, and therefore format compatibility with a read only type optical disc can be maintained. Abstract: An optical disc has spatial features (notches, bumps, etc.) that intentionally distort the analog Read Data signal. For a mark or space that is centered on a spatial feature, the distortion does not affect the resulting binary Read Data signal. If an edge of a mark or space is near the spatial feature, the resulting binary Read Data signal is altered. For calibration, marks or spaces are written adjacent to spatial features, with a range of times for initiating the writes. The result is a range of write times that do not alter the binary Read Data signal. Abstract: There provided an optical disk recording/reproducing method and an apparatus thereof capable of constantly forming an optimum mark region while appropriately correcting recording conditions. A sample hold circuit 6 detects and holds the level of a TPP signal to output a state monitoring signal. A reference level setting portion 8 holds the level of the state monitoring signal at which an optimum recording state is obtained and outputs a reference level signal. A recording state determining portion 7 outputs a record shortage signal and a record surplus signal based on the result of comparison between the reference level signal and the state monitoring signal. An LD output correcting portion 9 outputs an LD output correcting signal based on the record shortage signal and the record surplus signal as well as a record data signal.

Abstract: A test pattern including a first test mark which is one unit-record-length longer than a shortest mark among modulating codes and a second test mark which is two or more unit-record-lengths longer than the shortest mark is recorded under a plurality of recording conditions (step S2). The recorded test pattern is reproduced (step S3), and based on a plurality of reproduced signals thus obtained, recording conditions allowing the first test mark and the second test mark, respectively, to be suitably recorded are selected (step S4). A recording condition for the shortest mark is determined by inference based on the recording conditions of the first test mark and the second test mark.

Optimal power control areas in odd-numbered and even-numbered information storage layers viewed from a direction in which light is incident upon the information storage medium are disposed one on another to not directly face each other. An actually usable area of an optimal power control area in each of the information storage layers varies depending on use circumstances of each of the information storage layers. Therefore, when an OPC area of one information storage layer performs OPC, this OPC does not affect another information storage layer. Abstract: A method for determining recording laser power on a super-resolution optical recording medium, on which information is recorded on a super-resolution optical recording medium by irradiating a laser beam modulated into a recording pulse train according to recording data to thereby form a recording mark train including recording marks and spaces smaller than the resolution limit of a reproduction optical system and recording marks and spaces equal to or larger than the resolution limit, is provided. At the time of recording, the method determines a minimum value and a maximum value of recordable laser powers determined by test-writing before recording, and determines a maximum value of a recordable range of laser power by adding to the minimum value one-third of a difference between the maximum value of the recordable laser powers and the minimum value. The method determines an optimal range of recording laser power from the minimum value of recordable laser powers to the maximum value of the recordable range.
