  • Patent number: 7492686
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to systems and methods for providing flexible multipulse strategies. In specific embodiments, a plurality of multipulse location registers are dedicated to storing multipulse location information. Each of a plurality of different mark-lengths that can result in at least one multipulse is mapped to one or more bit location within the multipulse location registers, such that a unique multipulse execution strategy can be defined for each of the plurality of different mark-lengths. Each bit location within the multipulse location registers can contain a first type of bit or a second type of bit. The first type of bit is used to indicate where to execute a multipulse, and the second type of bit is used to indicate where to not execute a multipulse. This abstract is not intended to be a complete description of the various embodiments of the present invention.

Abstract: In the information recording apparatus, by driving the light source by the pulse signal corresponding to the recording signal, the laser pulse corresponding to the recording signal is irradiated onto the recording medium. The recording signal has the mark period to form the recording mark, and the space period in which the recording mark is not formed. In the mark period, the output level of the laser pulse changes between the normal level and the writing level, thereby, the recording mark is formed on the recording medium. On the one hand, over a predetermined period in the space period, the output level of the laser pulse is changed to the low level lower than the normal level. Thereby, the heat accumulation onto the recording medium, due to the transient response of the laser pulse in the mark period, is reduced, and in the mark period after that, the correct recording mark can be formed.

In the case of forming at least one recording mark among the several types of recording marks in L0 layer 20, the recording powers of a top pulse Ttop and a last pulse Tlp of the laser beam are set to Pw0? lower than the recording power Pw0 of a multi-pulse Tmp thereof.

Abstract: In a rewritable compact disc having a wobble groove on a substrate, crystal and amorphous states of a phase-change recording layer are an unrecorded/erased state and a recorded state, respectively. When the recording layer is exposed to recording light, amorphous marks assuming the recorded state are formed. At any of 2-, 4- and 8-times velocities with respect to a reference velocity (1-times velocity) whose linear velocity is 1.2-1.4 m/s, modulation m11 of a recorded signal when the recording light of approximately 780 nm in wavelength irradiates the recording layer via an optical system with NA=0.5 or 0.55 is 60-80%. A topmost level Rtop of reflectivity of the eye pattern of the recorded signal during retrieving at the 1-times velocity is 15-25%, and a jitter of the individual length of marks and inter-mark spaces during retrieving at 1-times velocity is 35 ns or less.

  • Patent number: 7403456
Abstract: An optical disc recording method and apparatus is capable of overwriting a phase change optical disc at high speed. With a preceding erasing beam out of two laser beams, a modulation component in an RF signal recorded on an optical disc is erased to a state where no problem occurs (the reflectance difference is reduced) and the top level is decreased to 70 to 40% of a top level of an original RF signal. After that, with the subsequent recording beam, a space is recorded at a laser power at which top level is reset to the original state (before the erasing process), and a mark is recorded at a laser power which can sufficiently decrease the bottom level. Consequently, even when the recording speed is the quadruple speed (about 1.6 to 2 times of a specification) much higher than a specific recording speed (for example, 2 to 2.4×) of a phase change optical disc, overwriting can be performed with a recording characteristic which can satisfy a regenerating characteristic specification.

Abstract: An optical disk apparatus for detecting synchronization signals of an optical disk. Marks and spaces are alternately arranged as synchronization signals of the optical disk. An encoding/decoding circuit of the optical disk apparatus utilizes a rule for alternately arranging synchronization signals, thereby verifying a detected synchronization signal. When the polarity of a synchronization signal detected from a preceding synchronization frame is a mark, the next synchronization signal is a space. When the polarity of a detected synchronization signal is a space, the signal is determined to be a correct synchronization signal.

Abstract: The mark-length recording system whereby information is recorded by changing the lengths of a recorded portion and an unrecorded or erased portion has a problem that, when new information is recorded in an already recorded region, the newly recorded information may deteriorate in reliability because the length and width of the newly recorded mark are different from those of the previously recorded mark and a part may exist that is not completely erased at the time of overwriting.
