  • Patent number: 9697844
Abstract: This invention describes a method for decentralized decoding of a multichannel audio signal by broadcasting the original encoded data and distributing the decoding process between a plurality of receiving units. This allows for the design and manufacture of scalable multichannel audio reproduction systems having an arbitrary number of output channels, composed of a plurality of generic decoder and loudspeaker units each generating fewer output channels. With distributed decoding, a manufacturer can use “off-the-shelf” stereo or mono signal processors, digital-to-analog converters and amplifier components in each generic decoding module, thus reducing manufacturing costs and complexity requirements for each module while offering unlimited scalability in the total number of output channels.

  • Patent number: 8086331
Abstract: The Procedure executing unit 42 makes a judgment on which among three conditions are satisfied by each of a plurality of audio streams. The BD-ROM reproduction apparatus selects an audio stream to be reproduced in accordance with each combination of conditions that are satisfied by each audio stream. One of the conditions is that a channel attribute of an audio stream is surround and the reproduction apparatus is capable to output surround audio. If the audio stream to be reproduced conforms to an encoding method such as DTS-HD or DD/DD+ whose audio frames are composed of basic data and extended data, the judgment on whether the surround output is available is made by judging whether or not the reproduction apparatus has a capability to process the extended data.

  • Patent number: 7127189
Abstract: A main controller controls a capacitor charger to charge a capacitor as necessary. A sub-controller controls a power saving mode and stops a power supply to the main controller when shifting to the power saving mode. A charge control circuit compares a terminal voltage of the capacitor with a predetermined value by a comparator circuit. If the terminal voltage is lower than the reference value, an AND circuit takes a logical product of an output signal of the comparator circuit and a power saving signal indicating the shift to the power saving mode, and outputs a control signal indicating an instruction to charge the capacitor, to the capacitor charger.

  • Patent number: 6996040
Abstract: Compressed audio data for 5.1 channels stored in the DVD-ROM 11A is read by the AC-3 decoder 12 of a pseudo multi-channel stereo play-back apparatus and, after expansion, stored temporarily in a buffer 13, channel by channel. Among stored audio data stored in the buffer 13, audio data for left and right channels and for a front center channel are then subjected to the phase transformation. Audio data for left and right front channels are mixed with the phase transformed audio data by first and second mixing circuits 21 and 22 and mixed audio data are converted into analog audio signals by first and second D/A converters. The apparatus is capable of pseudo reproduction of the multi-channel audio signals stored in a recording medium such as a DVD-ROM by two channel play-back with an excellent sound effect which is not obtainable by usual two-channel play-back systems.

  • Patent number: 5896358
Abstract: When an audio stream signal is transmitted, the bit stream information for determining the surround mode and special-use mode, including karaoke use, is sensed from the signal at a mode sensor. After the surround mode has been sensed, the audio data is converted by a decoder into a front left, front center, and front right main audio signals and a back left and back right surround audio signals in the surround mode, which are converted into analog signals and outputted to the corresponding speakers. When the special-use mode has been sensed, by using the central main audio signal of the front left, front center, and front right main audio signals and back left and back right surround audio signals converted at the decoder, a normally used first-type accompanying sound selectively made unused, for example, guide melody, is generated. In addition, by using the back left and back right surround audio signals, a normally unused second-type accompanying sound selectively used, for example, vocals, is generated.

  • Patent number: 5222059
Abstract: Spectral imbalance (alteration in timbre) when playing home video versions of motion pictures having soundtrack equalized for playback in a room whose room-loudspeaker system is aligned to the standard motion picture theater X-curve is overcome by timbre correction which compensates for the X-curve equalization. Surround-sound home playback of motion pictures is enhanced by employing main channel loudspeakers that produce generally direct sound fields and surround channel loudspeakers that produce generally diffuse sound fields. In addition, the reproduced surround-sound channel is further enhanced by decreasing the interaural cross-correlation of the surround-sound channel sound field and by reducing comb filtering effects in the surround-sound channel at listening positions within the room, preferably by introducing slight pitch shifting in the signals applied to multiple surround loudspeakers.

  • Patent number: 5043970
Abstract: Spectral imbalance (alteration in timbre) when playing home video versions of motion pictures is overcome by re-equalization according to a unique correction response curve which compensates for the equalization for playback in large theater-sized auditoriums inherent in motion picture soundtracks. Surround-sound home playback of motion pictures is enhanced by employing main channel loudspeakers that produce generally direct sound fields and surround channel loudspeakers that produce gnerally diffuse sound fields.
