Patent number: 8547840Abstract: Bandwidth is allocated by leveraging a bursty characteristic of data transmission signals to efficiently utilize network resources. Network performance is observed over a time period to identify patterns of data transmission rates as different signals are processed. To compensate for the fact that different jobs/tasks peak at different times, the total bandwidth limit may be increased by a scaling factor. The scaling factor is calculated using information obtained by observing network performance during the time period. The scaling factor is used to increase the total bandwidth available for all jobs/tasks executing during the time period without exceeding any bandwidth limits. The data transmission rate of each job/task may then be adjusted to utilize the newly available bandwidth.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 2011Date of Patent: October 1, 2013Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: Alok Kumar, Anand Raghuraman, Uday Naik, Aspi Siganporia, Sushant Jain

Patent number: 8542585Abstract: A method for processing network data includes collecting by a network interface controller (NIC), a plurality of transmit (TX) buffer indicators into a plurality of priority lists of connections. Each of the plurality of TX buffer indicators identifies transmit-ready data located externally to the NIC and not previously received by the NIC. One or more of the plurality of TX buffer indicators may be selected. The identified transmit-ready data may be retrieved into the NIC based on the selected one or more of the plurality of TX buffer indicators. At least a portion of the identified transmit-ready data may be transmitted. Each of the plurality of priority lists may be generated based on a particular connection priority characteristic and a particular connection type. The identified transmit-ready data may be associated with the same connection priority characteristic and the same connection type.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2011Date of Patent: September 24, 2013Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Scott McDaniel, Kan Frankie Fan, Uri El Zur

Patent number: 8537839Abstract: There is disclosed a port unit and methods for testing a network. The port unit may include a traffic generator, traffic receiver, and a port processor. The traffic generator may include a memory that stores data defining a plurality of packet streams. The port processor may store label tracking data associating a plurality of label condition sets with one or more respective locations within the traffic generator memory. When a control packet associating a MPLS label with a specific label condition set is received via the traffic receiver, the port processor may store the MPLS label in one or more traffic generator memory locations associated with the specific label condition set in accordance with the stored label tracking data.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2010Date of Patent: September 17, 2013Assignee: IxiaInventors: Noah Gintis, Alok Srivistava, Victor Alston

Patent number: 8538437Abstract: A method and devices for performing a handover of a data unit based communication that involves a sequence of data units from a first connection (51) between a first sender (10) and a receiver (4) to a second connection (52) between a second sender (20) and said receiver (4), which comprises indicating to the receiver (4) a reference data unit among data units provided to both the first sender (10) and the second sender as a part of the handover, and where the receiver, based on the reference data unit, keeps a record for identifying such data units among those data units provided to both the first sender (10) and the second sender (20) that were sent over the first connection (51) and successfully received by the receiver (4), prior to the communication having been passed to the second communication (52).Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2004Date of Patent: September 17, 2013Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Henning Wiemann, Joachim Sachs, Ian Herwono

Patent number: 8532140Abstract: A base station performs bandwidth assignment for each terminal station or each wireless link even when the base station does not receive a bandwidth request in random access from the terminal station in the demand assignment period present in a specific period in which a transmission frequency of data to transmit is high, the specific period being specified for each terminal station or each wireless link between the terminal station and the base station, and the terminal station transmits at least one of bandwidth request information and the data to transmit in a bandwidth assigned by the base station.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2009Date of Patent: September 10, 2013Assignee: Nippon Telegraph and Telephone CorporationInventors: Yoshitaka Shimizu, Fusao Nuno

Publication number: 20130223274Abstract: Disclosed is a method for performing a measurement (namely, a data loss measurement and/or a time measurement) on a data flow to be transmitted in a communication network. The method includes: upon transmission of the data flow, during first block periods that alternate in time with second block periods, marking each data unit of the data flow by setting a feature thereof to a first value and updating a first parameter; upon reception of the data flow, checking the feature for each received data unit and updating a second parameter when the feature is equal to the first value; while transmission and reception are performed, processing a timer for determining whether a current block period is one of the second block periods and, in the affirmative, providing current values of the first and second parameters; and performing a measurement using the current values of the first and second parameters.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 5, 2010Publication date: August 29, 2013Applicant: TELECOM ITALIA S.P.A.Inventors: Mauro Cociglio, Luca Castaldelli

Publication number: 20130215788Abstract: A wireless communications power saving method and apparatus is provided. The method includes establishing a circular buffer configured to maintain a number of most recently encountered frame delay times and waiting a frame delay time after receiving a further frame before the station enters a power save state. Frame delay time is a period equal to a largest most recently encountered frame delay period in the circular buffer. The method further determines, at a station, a dormancy time based on a number of data frames received since the station transitioned from an inactive mode to an active mode, a packet transmission rate, and a data frame time interval representing time between data frames received at the station, and causes the station to switch to a further inactive mode if a next packet is not received within the dormancy time after receipt of a previous packet.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 21, 2012Publication date: August 22, 2013Applicant: QUALCOMM INCORPORATEDInventors: Linhai He, Rashid A. Patent number: 8514741Abstract: A packet forwarding device changes packet transfer performance according to a packet load, and ensures communication quality of an important packet while transfer performance is made minimum to suppress power consumption. The packet forwarding device includes a measuring section to measure the packet load for each packet importance degree, an estimation section to estimate a future packet load for each importance degree based on the measurement result, a performance determination section to determine performance for an operation based on the estimated load, which are provided in, for example, a traffic estimation/performance determination section. Reduction in the power consumption and assurance of the communication quality of the important packet are realized by a minimum performance determination based on an important packet estimation load in the performance determination section and a preferential process of the important packet in the packet forwarding device.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2009Date of Patent: August 20, 2013Assignee: Alaxala Networks CorporationInventors: Takeki Yazaki, Mitsuru Nagasaka
