In A Ring System Patents (Class 370/258)
  • Patent number: 5583996
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for transmitting a packet from a source node S in a first stub 300 to a destination node D in a second stub 306 of an internet communications network 200. The first stub 300 is connected with a public data network (PDN) 210 by a first access point node Ra and the second stub 306 is connected with the PDN 210 by a second access point node Rd. The first access point node Ra, writes its PDN subnetwork address in the packet. The first access point node Ra then transmits the packet via a sequence of one or more intermediary access point nodes Rb, Rc on a base path until the packet reaches the second access point node Rd. The second access point node Rd receives the packet via the base path. The second access point node Rd stores the PDN subnetwork address of the first access point node Ra (contained in the packet) in an entry 131 of shortcut table 130 maintained at the second access point node Rd.

  • Patent number: 5583867
Abstract: A backplane wiring scheme is provided for use in a hub of a packet data communications system. Line cards are connected to the backplane wiring arrangement in the hub, where each line card is a coupling to a network segment, a station or a to a bridge to other stations or segments. The connection is usually in either a ring or a bus topology, and increased flexibility, reduced power consumption, and easier implementation are provided by a unique wiring scheme. Each line card has a number of receive ports (e.g., N-1) and has two transmit ports, the transmit ports including a transmit-left port and a transmit-tight port. The receive ports and transmit ports are arranged in a regular linear pattern on an edge of each of said line cards.

  • Patent number: 5581479
Abstract: Various methods and associated apparatuses are provided for communicating data from a central station to a remote station over some form of communications path. The data, which together form at least one title, are stored on at least one storage device. The data forming that title are then retrieved as data blocks from storage. Each data block is a sequential segment of the data. Finally, the retrieved data blocks are transmitted from the central station to the remote station. According to preferred embodiments, two types of storage devices are provided. The first type, preferably formed as an array of playback units, allows the data to be stored as data blocks and distributed accordingly over a plurality of storage devices. The second type, preferably formed as ring structures composed of solid state elements, provides a plurality of access points coupled to the storage medium, each of which is able to retrieve the data independently of other access points.
