Using Plural Diverse Channel Communications With A Dedicated Signaling Channel (i.e., Isdn) Patents (Class 370/264)
  • Patent number: 8085875
Abstract: Dynamic resource allocation systems, apparatus, and methods are disclosed for selectively improving the ability of a receiver to determine a channel estimate in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) system. A wireless communication system can use a common pilot channel configuration to aid channel estimation in one or more receivers in communication with the system. A receiver in communication with the system may be unable to demodulate received data due to an inaccurate channel estimate. The receiver can communicate to a transmitter in the system a request for additional channel estimation resources. The wireless communication system can provide additional channel estimation resources by inserting dedicated pilot channels into one or more of the frequencies allocated to symbols for the receiver. If the receiver is still unable to demodulate received data, the wireless communication system can incrementally insert additional pilot channels in the symbol associated with the receiver.

Abstract: A transmitter directed, distributed receiver using multi-user diversity provided by the distribution of the receiver. Advantage is taken of the uncorrelated variations over time in the condition of communication links between a common transmitter and several users. The greater the variation in the quality of a particular link over time, the greater the increase in total system throughput provided. A scheduler metric (or scheduler metric) represents the instantaneous quality of the communication link between each user and the transmitter with respect to the average quality of the link. Alternatively, the scheduler metric represents the instantaneous channel condition with respect to the average data throughput over that channel. The common transmitting station uses the scheduler metric to directly compare the desirability of granting each channel access with the desirability of granting each other channel access. The users with links that have the greatest scheduler metric are provided access to the channels.

  • Patent number: 7961713
Abstract: The invention relates to the representation of ISDN connections, which is independent of the type of connection, in a packet-oriented exchange. By adapting the signaling information, which is transmitted by ISDN connections, in a peripheral adapter, different ISDN connection types can be handled as a standard connection type in the packet-oriented exchange. The adaptation can ensue, for example, with the aid of a conversion table for the useful data references and call identifiers comprising signaling messages. The invention is advantageous in that it involves an uncomplicated representation of ISDN data in the packet-oriented exchange. ISDN connection-related data do not need to be managed in the packet-oriented exchange.

Abstract: A song and ad scheduler supporting clip-based and stream-based scheduling of multimedia items generates several hours of schedule in advance. Having multiple channel capability, the scheduler uses as inputs: the channel, associated playlists, rotation pattern for the channel, and associated programming rules to produce a schedule of multimedia items for the channel. Initially, the scheduler produces a schedule for each channel of predetermined length; then it periodically revisits the channel to add more songs, keeping the schedule to the desired length. Length of the initial playlist is configurable. The scheduler uses a producer-consumer model for distributing work. Producer threads periodically scan the system for work to be done. When a producer thread encounters work to be done, e.g. adding to the schedule of a channel, the producer thread places a work request into a queue. Abstract: Assigning inbound ringing ISDN channels to a particular endpoint's call uses a framing listening technique to distinguish between H.221 framing, master bonding channel framing and slave bonding channel framing. If the channel is receiving Master Bonding Channel framing, the MCU detects that this is a new call from a unique far endpoint and may then begin a process to address this new call. If the channel is receiving Slave Bonding Channel framing, the MCU then transmits a multi-frame pattern and looks for a Physical Video Unit Identifier the MCU sent to this far end via the Master Channel upon initial negotiation. If the channel is receiving H.221 framing, a H.243 terminal address assigned using a Terminal Indicate Assignment (TIA) message in the initial channel is used. The far endpoint may then send this address in its additional channels through the use of a Terminal Indicate Additional Channel X (TIX) message.

This auto-detection provides a variety of simulated call activity stimuli to the ISDN switch peered with the terminal equipment, thus exercising secondary ISDN features such as call conferencing, call forward, call transfer, and X.25/D channel data transfer capability in a manner that can be detected by the terminal equipment. For instance, the call conferencing feature can be detected by having the terminal equipment place a call to it's own directory number using one B-channel, answering the call on the other B-channel, and then attempting to add a third party to this call. By evaluating the messages returned from the switch during the attempted third party addition, the auto-detection process can determine whether the call conferencing feature is available.

Abstract: A user of a wireless device, such as a mobile phone, can make purchases or obtain information via a network, such as the Internet, using both voice and non-verbal methods. Users can submit voice queries and receive non-verbal replies, submit non-verbal queries and receive voice replies, or perform similar operations that marry the voice and data capabilities of modern mobile communication devices. The user may provide notification criteria indicating under what conditions a notification should be sent to the user's wireless device. When purchasing opportunities matching the selected notification criteria become available, the user is notified. The user can respond to the notification, and immediately take advantage of the purchasing opportunity if he so desires. Mixed-mode interactions can also be used by sellers to more advantageously control the marketing of distressed, time sensitive, or other merchandise/services.

Abstract: A method and a gateway provide for down speeding the data rate at the circuit switched side of a call being translated in the gateway if the packet switched side does not have sufficient bandwidth capabilities for matching the circuit switched data rate. The gateway compares the bandwidth of the circuit switched and packet switched sides of a call after establishing the connection. If the packet switched side of the call is connected at a lower rate than the circuit switched side, e.g., because of insufficient capabilities of the packet switched endpoint, the gateway initiates a down speeding procedure at the circuit switched side. The down speeding procedure disconnects a number of B-channels of the circuit switched connection to make the call rate equal or lower than the call rate of the packet switched side of the call.

Abstract: Data communicated on one wireless channel is converted and communicated via a wired line. Alternatively, data communicated on a plurality of wireless channels is bundled and communicated via a wired line using a number of channels smaller than that of the wireless channels. In a case where another wireless communication apparatus wishes to use a wireless communication channel when a plurality of wireless channels are being used for communication, some of the plurality of wireless channels are released, thereby making it possible for the other communication apparatus to perform communication even when communication is being carried out using the plurality of wireless channels. When communication by the other wireless communication apparatus subsequently ends, communication on the original number of wireless channels is resumed.

  • Patent number: 6662135
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing an operability test on a communications system device such as a cable modem is provided. The testing method comprises the steps of providing a set of output test data to the communications system device being tested, and generating an output signal with the device in a manner that is responsive to the output test data. In the case of a cable modem, the output signal is generated by the modem's modulator. The output signal is then provided as an input to a reflective mixer which generates a reflected signal in response to the output signal and directs it back into the communications system device being tested. The communications device can then use the reflected signal to generate a set of input test data that can be compared to the output test data to check the accuracy of the device's operation.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing unified conferencing services in a telecommunications system is described. A DSP chip in the system contains an internal CPU and on-chip memory storage device. The CPU is programmed such that when a conference has been established, the time slots or channels of PCM information are collected and stored. Channels are sub-sampled at a pre-determined optimal time interval. The energy for each sub-sample, which is a mathematical summation over time utilizing a sum of squares equation, is calculated for each channel. These calculated energies are stored in an associated array. The energies are surveyed to select the N loudest channels. The input signals (the voice information) for those N loudest channels are used to form the conference. More specifically, the sum of the N loudest channels is generated. This sum forms the basis for a broadcast output.
