  • Patent number: 7106718
Abstract: A signaling bearer quality of service profile is pre-established and configured in various nodes in an access network. This is a new quality of service class designed to meet the needs of signaling bearers in multimedia sessions. A message requesting a bearer to support a communication between a mobile terminal and an access point to a packet data network is generated. That message includes a signaling quality of service indicator, which when detected, causes a bearer to be established between the mobile terminal and the access point in accordance with the pre-established signaling quality of service profile. The pre-established signaling quality of service profile typically includes low delay and low bit error rates in addition to high priority and accommodation of bursty traffic patterns. A signaling usage indicator may also employed to implement a standard set of minimum signaling bearer capabilities.

  • Patent number: 7043249
Abstract: A packet data serving node (106) initiates a packet data session update procedure with the RAN by passing a session update message containing packet data session parameters associated with at least one packet data service to a packet control function (111) which may be part of a radio access network (110). The session parameter may include a packet data service inactivity timer, QoS parameters, user information or any other session related parameters. Packet control function (111) examines the PSDN code and inhibits tearing down the link (A10/A11) between PCF (111) and PDSN (106). Further, if a handoff occurs, the BS passes the packet data session parameters associated with each of the service instances to the MSC that in turn passes them on the target BS of the handoff.

  • Patent number: 6912214
Abstract: A system and method for optimizing the use of packet-resources by releasing a hanging packet-data connection when a Mobile Station (MS) performs a power-down while involved in a dormant packet-data session. A Base Station Controller (BSC) sends a message to a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) indicating that the MS has powered down. The MSC determines that the packet-data session is dormant, and sends an instruction to the BSC in a class-0 connectionless transaction to release network resources associated with the packet-data session. The BSC then sends an instruction to a Packet Control Function (PCF) to tear down the associated resources, and the packet-data connection is released by a Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) in response to the tearing down of the resources by the PCF.

Abstract: A telecommunications system and method are disclosed for mapping a Transcoder/Rate Adaptor (TRAU) protocol onto a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) for use in an Internet Protocol (IP) based Base Station System (BSS) architecture. All in-band control bits in the TRAU protocol are not relevant when using the UDP protocol. Therefore, when speech information is mapped onto a UDP datagram for transfer to a Channel Codec Unit(CCU) in a Base Transceiver Station (BTS), some of the information normally transferred between a CCU and the TRAU can be removed. For example, a Time Alignment command included in some of frame types is not needed, and should be removed. In addition, bits relating to a frame structure, such as TRAU synchronization bits, tail bits and spare control bits, should be removed from all frame types. Furthermore, a new control bit that contains a sequence number must be added to handle reordering of a packet data stream.

  • Patent number: 6804233
Abstract: A method and system are provided for trunking multiple links between a switch and a server. Server drivers recognize and automatically configure additional installed network interface cards (NICs) or multi-port NICs as group members. A monolithic driver, or an overlaying driver shim makes the group of NICs appear to be a single NIC to the server operating system and clients. Multiple NICs having the same MAC address and appearing on different ports are connected directly to a switch which treats the group as a single logical port. Using a deterministic algorithm, the switch looks up a received packet's destination in the address table. A list of possible ports for reaching the server and a flag indicating that the server is to be reached via this trunked group of ports are retrieved. The switch selects a port based upon the packet's source address. On the trunk to the clients, the server driver performs the same deterministic algorithm on the destination addresses.

  • Patent number: 6345044
Abstract: A system and a method for address assignments for wireless satellite telephone systems comprises one or more desksets (telephones) and a radio antenna unit (RAU). The desksets are connected to the RAU using an interface bus. In operation, a deskset initiates an address arbitration cycle by transmitting a request for an address to the RAU. The RAU acknowledges after it receives the request, and queries other desksets if the requested address is being used by other desksets. If no other deskset responds within a predetermined time period, the RAU grants the requesting deskset the address. If the requested address is being used, the deskset using the address informs the RAU, and the RAU rejects the request. The requesting deskset then requests a different address. If all available addresses are being used, the requesting deskset informs the user and shuts down. If two or more desksets transmit requests concurrently, there will be a collision. To resolve a collision, the desksets are divided into two sets.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a data transmission method between a base station controller (BSC) and a base transceiver station (BTS) in a digital mobile communication system, for varying a length of a frame according to a data transmission rate, thus improving transmission efficiency of a trunk between the BSC and BTS. When transmitting voice and data from the BSC to the BTS, a selection unit in the BSC generates a length-varied frame according to a transmission rate of a packet to be transmitted to the BTS and transmits the variable length frame to the BTS. Alternatively, when transmitting voice and data from the BTS to the BSC, a base station common processor in the BTS generates a length-varied frame according to a transmission rate of a packet to be transmitted to the BSC and transmits the variable length frame to the BSC. Therefore, the present invention can effectively use a channel bandwidth between the BTS and the BSC, thereby improving trunk efficiency.

Abstract: A unified in-building communication method in a communication system connected to a public land mobile network (PLMN), a public switched telephone network/integrated services digital network (PSTN/ISDN), and an Internet protocol (IP) network is disclosed. The method comprises setting a common cell area such that a wireless public or wireless in-company communication service is available in a prescribed local area; and connecting a mobile switching center (MSC) to the PLMN, using a registered mobile terminal as an extension telephone in the common cell area, and bypassing an unregistered mobile terminal, so that the PLMN can share a base station. The registered mobile terminal communicates with a wire extension terminal or a wireless extension terminal, and the registered mobile terminal wirelessly receives a data service through the IP network. The wireless in-building communication service of the present invention is performed in a single cell so that a handoff does not occur.

Abstract: A porting control routing (PCR) node (302) is adapted to efficiently route signaling messages associated with a mobile subscriber that has been either ported in to or out of a service provider's wireless communication network. The PCR node (302) includes both range- and exception based routing rule databases (348 and 346). These databases increase flexibility in allocating mobile identification numbers among multiple mobile service nodes. Furthermore, the association of a ported status indicator and related routing information with entries in the exception based database allows the PCR node (302) to more efficiently manage a service provider's mobile service resources.

Abstract: An apparatus and system for decoding colliding data transmissions utilizing an at will transmission protocol is disclosed. An apparatus for decoding an analog signal includes an input terminal, a data bus, a first decoder connected to the input terminal and data bus, configured to receive an analog signal, decode the signal into a first message and output the message to the data bus, a second decoder connected to the input terminal and data bus and configured to receive an analog signal, determine whether the analog signal includes a second message, decode the signal into a second message and out put the message to the data bus. A microprocessor operatively connected to the first and second decoders directs the second decoder to search for a colliding second transmission immediately after the first decoder has begun to decode a first transmission. If colliding second signal captures the receiver as the first transmission is decoded, the second decoder decodes and outputs the second message intact.

Abstract: A high impedance tap for monitoring traffic over a communication link of a fast Ethernet local area network (LAN). The circuit of the present invention is advantageously used for tapping into a fast Ethernet communication link (e.g., bi-directional communication channel) of a LAN using, for instance, {fraction (10/100)} BaseT Ethernet communication protocol. The novel circuit is particularly useful in point to point communication links (e.g., supporting fast Ethernet communication) where two communication nodes are coupled together using a bi-directional communication link (e.g., two twisted pair cables). Unlike the prior art monitoring probes, the probe of the present invention does not insert itself in series between the communication link, but rather taps onto the communication link in parallel using a high impedance termination circuit thereby leaving the existing communication link undisturbed electrically.

Abstract: Frames received by base stations (base stations) (103-107) are assigned a frame-quality indicator (FQI) by the base station. FQI information for all frames received is continuously backhauled to a switch (101). The switch (101) sidehauls the FQI information to a call anchoring base station, where a determination of a base station with the best FQI for each frame takes place. Once the anchoring base station determines a base station with the best FQI for a particular frame, the anchoring base station sends a FORWARD_FRAME message to the base station with the best FQI, or, if the anchoring base station is the base station with the best FQI, nothing is sent to the other base stations. Once the FORWARD_FRAME message is received by a base station, the base station immediately forwards the frame (identified by the frame number) to the switch (101). The switch (101) then routes the selected frame accordingly.

Abstract: In order to transmit data packets for a packet data service in a cellular mobile radio network, in each case one channel (TCH) in the radio transmission system (BSS) of the mobile radio network is reserved and linked to a transmission channel (NUC), which leads to a separate service network node (GSN), to form a continuous data channel. Data packets and signalling information are transmitted jointly via the data channel in a single data protocol between the mobile subscriber station (MS) and the service network node (GSN). In this way, signalling information and data packets are transmitted in only one protocol, to be precise the data protocol. By using only the data protocol for the joint transmission of the data packets and signalling information, there is a reduction in the signalling load and the channel seizure duration in the mobile radio network in comparison with the solution with two separate protocols for signalling and data.
