Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for end-to-end rate adaptation using radio access network (RAN) assisted rate adaptation. Particularly, when a user equipment (UE) risks operating at rates greater than the guaranteed bit rates (GBR), the UE may rely on rate adaptation mechanisms to indicate when it has exceeded the supported bandwidth such that the UE may reduce its rate accordingly. Specifically, in some examples, a network device (e.g., call session control function (CSCF) and/or policy and charging rules function (PCRF)) may configure endpoints in an end-to-end communication to operate at rates that exceed GBR based on determining that all endpoints support RAN assisted rate adaptation capability. In other examples, the network device may configure maximum bit rates (MBR) that exceed GBR for only the endpoint that supports RAN assisted rate adaptation capability.

  • Patent number: 10477364
Abstract: According to one aspect of this disclosure, a charging client in a telecommunication network controls, or at least influences, the time over which a granted resource quota is considered valid for use in initiating or continuing a communication session that is subject to online charging control. When sending a given reservation request to a controlling charging server, the charging client indicates the requested timer value. Provided the requested timer value is acceptable to the charging server, the server sends a reservation response that includes a conforming granted timer value, and the charging client times expiration of the granted resource quota according to the granted timer value. In case the reservation response is non-conforming, the charging client decides whether or not to use the granted resource quota. Such operations allow the charging client to tune quota timer values, for example, in dependence on loading at the charging client.

Abstract: An exemplary method involves a user equipment (UE) receiving a communication-origination request to initiate a communication with a given counterpart. In response, the UE: (a) uses historical communication data for one or more previous communications as a basis for evaluating whether the UE is likely to be assigned a particular codec, from a plurality of possible codecs, for communication with the given counterpart; (b) based on results of the evaluation, determines a respective setting for each of one or more access parameters affecting a likelihood of successfully establishing the communication with the given counterpart; and (c) performs the communication-origination process according to the determined settings for the one or more access parameters, to initiate the requested communication with the given counterpart.
