Employing Logical Addressing For Routing (e.g., Vp Or Vc) Patents (Class 370/409)
  • Publication number: 20100309927
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling bandwidth in a Virtual Private Network assigns and allocates transmission bandwidth to packet VPNs for either connectionless or connection-oriented communication. The method creates two views of transmission facilities: a user plane view and a control plane view. In the user plane view, the bandwidth of the transmission facility is split into quantified and identified partitions. In the control plane view, transmission facilities are represented as logical links forming a topology that can be used for the purpose of routing the VPN. The two views are tied together by assigning user plane partitions to VPN control plane links. As a result, the allocation of bandwidth to VPNs becomes a controllable and viewable entity, thereby facilitating management and QoS provisioning in a VPN network.

  • Patent number: 7848335
Abstract: A virtual private network (VPN) tunnel is established that extends from a source spoke to a destination spoke in a hub-and-spoke enterprise network. Prior to establishing the VPN tunnel, packets are sent from the source spoke to the destination spoke through the hub network. In this manner, packets are not dropped while the VPN tunnel is being set up. The VPN tunnel is established by querying a server for the network address of a destination router in the destination spoke, then setting up the VPN tunnel using a secure communication protocol. An extension to the Internet Key Exchange (IKE) protocol is used to obtain the private network address of the destination router during setup of the VPN tunnel. A forwarding table is updated after the VPN tunnel is established to reroute the packets through the new VPN tunnel.

  • Patent number: 7801021
Abstract: A technique that enables a source endpoint of a tunnel employing encapsulation to determine if a destination endpoint of the tunnel is reachable or unreachable. The technique issues “keepalive” packets that are returned to the source endpoint by a reachable destination endpoint. The source endpoint of the tunnel constructs a keepalive packet containing a return-keepalive packet, encapsulates it and forwards it over the tunnel to the destination endpoint. The destination endpoint, in turn, decapsulates the packet to yield the return-keepalive packet and forwards the return-keepalive packet preferably over the tunnel towards the source endpoint. Upon arrival at the source endpoint, the return-keepalive packet is processed. By receiving the return-keepalive packets the source end-point concludes the destination endpoint is reachable. After a predetermined number of return-keepalive packets have not been received, the source endpoint concludes that the destination endpoint is unreachable.

After adding the status information for the new virtual network element, a communication regarding the new virtual network element may be transmitted. Related systems and computer program products are also discussed.

  • Patent number: 7697460
Abstract: A technique is disclosed that attempts to improve the evaluation of a network path's signal quality, as well as the selection of a network path for transmission purposes, without some of the costs and disadvantages of doing so in the prior art. In accordance with the illustrative embodiment, a node with access to the packet network, such as a VoIP telephone endpoint, evaluates the quality of service that is associated with each of multiple network paths. The evaluation process is iterative, in which the number of candidate paths is successively reduced from one iteration of the technique to the next. The multiple paths that remain as candidates in any given iteration are evaluated concurrently and at an evaluation bit rate that i) is less than the full transmission rate of the real-time traffic (VoIP) packets to be sent and ii) varies as a function of the number of candidate paths remaining under consideration.

  • Patent number: 7693158
Abstract: Methods and systems for selectively processing VLAN traffic from different networks while allowing flexible VLAN identifier assignment are disclosed. According to one aspect, a layer 2 switch includes a virtual switch identifier data structure that associates a VLAN identifier extracted from a layer 2 frame and a port identifier corresponding to a port on which a frame is received with a virtual switch identifier. The virtual switch identifier is used to select a per-virtual-switch data structure, such as a forwarding table. The per-virtual-switch data structure is used to control processing of the layer 2 frame on a per-virtual-switch basis. The per-virtual-switch data structure may also be updated separately from the data structures assigned to other virtual switches.

Abstract: A privately addressed home network bridge is provided for each of two privately addressed home networks. These bridges couple to corresponding gateways for each of the networks. A network tunnel connection is established between the two bridges via the gateways and an intervening publicly addressed network. At least one, and preferably both, of the home network bridges then serve as a proxy/router to facilitate an exchange of messages as between network devices of the two privately addressed home networks. Pursuant to a preferred approach the home network bridges use a mapping technique to correlate private addresses as used in the two privately addressed networks.

The method includes: a system chip inputs the time slots of all overhead bytes that will be processed and descrambled data, and corresponding virtual container numbers, the overhead processor encodes the byte and stores all overhead byte of the same channel in the address of the same overhead memory; at the same time it stores in turn the overhead byte of different channels in different address spaces based on the virtual container numbers, so that an overhead processing logic performs a polling process. The method and device only use a set of overhead processing logic for the overhead of large capacity chips, and save the area and power consumption greatly, thereby reduce the production cost.

Abstract: A method for operating a router has the following steps. First, the router receives a data packet to be forwarded, the data packet having an indication that it is to be routed by tag switching to a destination router, the destination router to forward the packet to a destination computer. Second, the router prepends a tag to the data packet, the tag to be used by the destination router to route the data packet to the destination computer. Third, the router prepends an encapsulation header to the data packet, the encapsulation header to route the data packet to the destination router. Fourth, the router transmits the data packet with the encapsulation header and the tag for routing through the network to the destination router.

Abstract: The present invention leverages an existing content delivery network infrastructure to provide a system that enhances performance for any application that uses the Internet Protocol (IP) as its underlying transport mechanism. An overlay network comprises a set of edge nodes, intermediate nodes, and gateway nodes. This network provides optimized routing of IP packets. Internet application users can use the overlay to obtain improved performance during normal network conditions, to obtain or maintain good performance where normal default BGP routing would otherwise force the user over congested or poorly performing paths, or to enable the user to maintain communications to a target server application even during network outages.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and nodes for performing data traffic aggregation over an access domain using service bindings. Upon receipt of a service request related message at an access edge node for a first device of a user domain, the service request related message identifying the first device of the user domain and one of the service provider domains, a service binding is created at the access edge node. The service binding rules data traffic between the first device of the user domain and the service provider domain by committing an access node serving the user domain and the access edge node in a manner of managing data traffic therebetween over the access domain. An access node serving the user domain for which the service request related message is received is informed of the created service binding.
