  • Patent number: 7369556
Abstract: A service provider's routers (PE1, P1, P2, PE2) provide connections between and share routing information with routers (CE1, CE2) of a customer virtual private network (VPN) as well as routers of other customers' VPNs, which may have overlapping address spaces. A service provider's edge router (PE1) informed by the customer's router (CE1) that it will forward packets to a given prefix notifies the other edge router (PE2) that PE1 can forward packets to that address prefix if the destination is in the VPN to which CE1 belongs. PE1 also tells PE2 to tag any thus-destined packets with a particular tag T3. PE2 stores this information in a forwarding information base that it separately keeps for that VPN so that when PE2 receives from a router CE2 in the same VPN a packet whose destination address has that prefix, it tags the packet as requested. But PE2 also tags it with a tag T2 that the router P2 to which PE2 first sends it has asked PE2 to apply to packets to be sent to PE1.

Promptly after the completion of signaling (218) for PPP connection establishment and MIP registration (if supported), as required for an inter-PDSN dormant mode handoff, an access network (AN) 121 expedites the release of communication resources such as the wireless traffic channel, the SCCP connection, and the A8 bearer connection. Thus, in an inter-PDSN dormant mode handoff the packet data session of an MS (101) is promptly transitioned back to the dormant packet data state. This enables communication resources to be freed for other calls and/or handoffs in a more timely manner than is enabled today.

  • Patent number: 7349343
Abstract: In a communications network of nodes connected by links, routing of traffic is done according to routing tables available to the nodes. The routing table for each node shows fields for destination nodes and for next hop nodes towards those destination nodes, and traffic is routed at each node according to values entered in those fields. The nodes modify the values in the fields according to messages received from neighboring nodes. This controls traffic flow in that values are raised on receipt of messages from neighboring nodes. If messages are received less frequently from a node, for instance because of congestion in the network or failure of a node, the values for that node will be relatively depressed and the network will tend to route traffic away from the node.

Packets from multiple VPNs are multiplexed over the connection. Each packet is associated with a particular VPN. If packets do not inherently include information from which the VPN can be ascertained, then a VPN identifier is encoded in the packet. The VPN identifier may be encoded in the packet via a tagging mechanism, in which each VPN is associated with a unique tag, and a tag is included in each packet. The VPN identifier may alternatively be encoded in the packet by including the VPN identifier in the packet, for example, in a header (such as an LLC/SNAP header) within the packet.

Abstract: A method for detecting and directing traffic in a network environment is provided that includes receiving a packet included within a communication flow that is initiated by a mobile terminal and setting a flag within the packet. The method further includes directing the packet to a next destination by recognizing that the flag included within the packet was set and therefore is associated with a mobile-to-mobile communication session.

  • Patent number: 7327759
Abstract: Packets or frames of data may be compressed, encrypted/decrypted, filtered, classified, searched or subjected to other deep-packet processing operations before being distributed through the internet. The microprocessor system and method of the present invention provide for the orderly processing of such data packets without disrupting or changing the sequence in which the data is intended to be transmitted to its destination. This is achieved by receiving frames into an input buffer for processing. Associated with this input buffer is a unit for determining the operation to be performed on each frame. An arbitrator assigns each frame to a processing core engine. An output buffer collects the processed frames, and a sequencer forwards the processed frames from the output buffer to their destination in the same order as received by the input/output buffer. Maintaining the sequence of data transmission is particularly useful in voice transmission, such as videos and movies.

Abstract: An asynchronous control mechanism packet is used to send control messages and information to one or more bridge devices within a network of buses of devices. The asynchronous control mechanism packet is addressed to a device on one of the buses and is intercepted by one or more appropriate bridge devices along the path to the destination device. The asynchronous control mechanism packet is targeted at a particular bridge device or used to send control messages and information to bridge devices along a particular communications route between two devices. The asynchronous control mechanism packet includes a designation specifying that it is an asynchronous control mechanism packet and should be treated accordingly. This designation is recognized by the appropriate bridge devices. Preferably, this designation is included within the extended transaction code field of the packet. In an alternate embodiment, the designation is included within a transaction code field of the packet.

The communications network can be the Internet. The router then transmits the control signal to at least one appliance to control the appliance in accordance with the control signal. A reply to the control signal can be received from the appliance and the reply can be transmitted to the instant messenger application regarding a status of the appliance. The control signals can be transmitted among the appliances in accordance with a standardized home automation interface. The router can be configured to interface with a plurality of appliances via a home automation system interface unit. The router can also be configured to log onto an instant messenger server and function as an instant messenger client to receive control signals from a user.

  • Patent number: 7295575
Abstract: A packet transmission apparatus and method may divide data into a plurality of packets and transmit the packets. At a transmitting end, a context identifying number, identifying a data stream, is selected based on a relationship between a sequence number of a packet that is to be transmitted and a sequence number in an immediately preceding packet. A sequence number denoting an order of a packet divided on a per context basis is compressed, and transmission data assigned to the context identifying number with the compressed sequence number is transmitted on a per packet basis. At the receiving end, the compressed sequence number is decompressed on a per context basis. The context is separated based on the context identifying number, and data is combined by reassembling a packet into the order of a decompressed sequence number.
