Abstract: One or more virtual access nodes manage multiple physical links connecting a digital subscriber line access multiplexer and an intelligent network interface device by logically bonding physical ports together into a group. Physical ports bonded in a logical group have equal priority with respect to one another. Thus, no master-slave relationship exists between the physical ports in the logical group. Traffic associated with a site is transmitted over physical links associated with the logical group of physical ports to a customer premises network interface device. The customer premises network interface device subsequently aggregates the received traffic and provides an increased bandwidth to the site over the physical links. The quality of communication is based on the number of operational physical links associated with the logical group. As long as at least one physical link associated with the logical group remains operational, communication will be enabled.

Abstract: A system and method is provided for scheduling transmissions from a plurality of services operating over a widely distributed communications network. A headend communications device (such as a cable modem termination system) arbitrates bandwidth among a plurality of cable modems configurable for bi-directional communications. The headend grants a bandwidth region to a specified cable modem or assigns contention regions for a group of cable modems. Each cable modem contains a local scheduler that sends requests for bandwidth according to local policies or rules. Upon receipt of a grant from the headend, the local scheduler selects packets to be transmitted to best serve the needs of the services associated with the cable modem. Accordingly, a service requesting bandwidth may not be the service utilizing the grant corresponding to bandwidth request. Nonetheless, the local scheduler manages bandwidth allocation among its local services such that all requesting services eventually receive bandwidth.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides systems and methods for administrative boundaries in a single domain optical network such as emulation of an External network-network interface (ENNI) using an Internal-Network to Network Interface (INNI). For example, in a single monolithic domain, a network and associated network elements may discover network elements, build topology, compute paths, establish new calls, etc. A user may identify/mark specific links as emulated “ENNI” links with the specific links actually being INNI links. As a call traverses this emulated link, a new call is initiated (much in the same way a new call segment would be created for a call). Signaling proceeds as normal. When the call set-up is fully complete, instead of a single call segment, many call segments exists. Advantageously, this allows use of INNI control plane features while allowing a network operator to future-proof their network by installing call segments at future boundary points.

  • Patent number: 8467403
Abstract: Disclosed are, inter alia, methods, apparatus, computer-storage media, mechanisms, and means associated with the coordinated updating of forwarding information bases (FIBs) in a multistage packet switching device, which performs at least lookup operations on multiple different FIBs in determining how to forward a packet. One embodiment uses lookup operations on two different FIBs, with these being an ingress FIB on an ingress line card and an egress FIB on an egress line card. In response to a change in the forwarding information for a stream of packets, the egress FIBs are first updated to include both the old and new forwarding information. After all egress FIBs have been updated, the ingress FIBs are updated to use the new forwarding information. This update procedure is designed to eliminate loss or duplication of packets induced during the updating of these FIBs to use the new forwarding information.

  • Patent number: 8437360
Abstract: A CMTS or other data aggregation component having a DHCPv6 relay agent extracts a Media Access Control (MAC) address of an end device from a data packet received from an end device. A DHCPv6 data frame is created for transmission to a DHCPv6 server. The MAC address may be inserted into a specific option of the DHCPv6 data frame, where data in the option may not be processed by the server and are echoed back to the aggregation component or CMTS. The DHCPv6 data frame is transmitted to the DHCPv6 server. The component receives a response message from the server that may contain the MAC address or similar client hardware address as it was sent to the server by the network component. The network component may determine an outgoing port interface from which the response message should be sent, utilizing the MAC address and an interface bundling table. In this manner, interface bundling may be enabled.
