  • Patent number: 8804767
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for selecting digital coding and/or decoding technology for programming and data delivery over, e.g., a content-based network. In one embodiment, the network comprises an HFC cable or satellite network that includes a server process interfacing with a plurality of customer premises equipment (CPE), and/or associated client devices, each having different capabilities profiles. The server determines the one or more capabilities possessed by the CPE, and evaluates one or more program or content choices for possible delivery to that CPE based on its profile. The server generates a list of programs or content based on this evaluation, and transmits this list to the CPE, which displays the list for viewing by a user. The user is therefore offered a list of available content that is compatible with their specific configuration.

  • Patent number: 8787291
Abstract: A wireless communication base station apparatus wherein when a frequency scheduling transmission and a frequency diversity transmission are performed in a multicarrier communication at the same time, the adaptive control of a channel for performing the frequency scheduling transmission can be prevented from being complicated. In this apparatus, a modulating part modulates an encoded Dch data to generate Dch data symbols. A modulating part modulates an encoded Lch data to generate Lch data symbols. An assigning part assigns the Dch and Lch data symbols to subcarriers constituting OFDM symbols and outputs them to a multiplexing part. At this moment, the assigning part assigns a set of Dch and Lch data symbols to each subcarrier for a respective subband.

  • Patent number: 8750325
Abstract: Data streams stored in buffers are modulated by modulation sections. Multipliers multiply the signals output from the modulation sections by weights output from a weight control section. The signals output from the multipliers are added up by addition sections, subjected to radio transmission processing by transmission radio sections and sent through antennas. A buffer control section controls the buffers based on a retransmission count output from a retransmission count detection section. The weight control section outputs weights different from weights at the time of previous transmission to the multipliers every time data is retransmitted. This allows a diversity gain at the time of data retransmission to be increased even if a time variation of the propagation path environment for radio signals is slow.

  • Patent number: 8743913
Abstract: A distributed DSLAM, which comprises a head end subsystem located within a switching facility and a remote subsystem located outside of the switching facility. The head end subsystem is operative for routing streams of data from a data network to the remote subsystem over a communication link, while the remote subsystem is operative for transmitting over a set of local loops analog signals comprising digitally modulated versions of the data. Separating the routing and modem functionality between inside and outside plant facilities reduces heat dissipation in the outside plant, leading to increased reliability. Flow control can be performed in the upstream and downstream directions by transmitting portions of individual packets and withholding other portions of individual packets. This is done instead of withholding the transmission of entire packets. As a result, the perceived impact on video quality, for example, is lessened.

  • Patent number: 8331216
Abstract: In a single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) system, a receiver receives transmission symbols from a transmitter, determines a set of subbands used by the transmitter, processes the received transmission symbols for the set of subbands, obtains received pilot values for a transmitted pilot, and obtains received data values for transmitted data. The receiver may iteratively perform channel and interference estimation for the transmitter. The receiver selects an initial interference estimate, derives a channel estimate based on the received pilot values and the interference estimate, and derives a new interference estimate based on the received pilot values and the channel estimate. The receiver may repeat the derivation of the channel estimate and the interference estimate for multiple iterations. The receiver then performs data detection and/or receiver spatial processing on the received data values based on the channel estimate and the interference estimate.

  • Patent number: 8179922
Abstract: A method and system for monitoring the health of a wireless telecommunication network. Network health is monitored without placing an administrative burden on the carrier network itself, instead, this burden is placed on components that lie outside the carrier network and pass communications through it. The data service provider infrastructure sends a request to a mobile device, asking that it return data regarding its location. The carrier networks handling the request insert location information into the packet that is sent to the mobile device, but this information is not sent to the data service provider infrastructure itself. The mobile device harvests this location information from the packets it receives and inserts it in a response packet that finds its way back to the data service provider infrastructure. The data service provider infrastructure is able to collate this location data and to analyze it, determining the carrier network's health.

Abstract: A communication terminal apparatus that can eliminate the waste of reception quality report, suppress the interference of an upstream network, perform an optimum assignment using a scheduling, prevent the loss of resources, and ensure the fairness of transmission assignment using the scheduling. In this apparatus, a reception quality determining part (110) uses a pilot signal, which is included in a received signal, to determine the reception quality for each of subcarrier blocks. A CQI generating part (111) generates CQIs each of which is the information indicative of a result of the determination by the reception quality determining part (110). A sorting part (112) sorts the CQIs in descending or ascending order of the reception quality.

  • Patent number: 7916639
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for data-flow quality control in a Digital Subscriber Line communications system comprising a transmitter, a receiver, and a Digital Subscriber Line intercoupling the transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter sends a data-flow to the receiver, where the data-flow is modulated onto data-carriers according to a bit allocation indicative for the number of bits to be modulated on each data-carrier. The method comprises the steps of the receiver measuring the data-flow quality and subsequently the receiver instructs the transmitter to decrease the bit allocation with a same amount for a plurality of data-carriers in case the data-flow quality is unsatisfactorily low. Then the transmitter decreases the bit allocation accordingly.

Abstract: An advanced video multiplexer system designed and optimized for next generation on-demand video distribution is described. The system optimizes identifies a multi-program transport stream best able to accommodate new sessions based upon Quality of Service (QoS) and QAM utilization ratios. MPTS channels are rebalanced via re-grouping and transrating as necessary to optimize bandwidth utilization. Multiple video formats are supported via built-in transcoding. The multiplexer manages encryption resources and supports new sessions using previously allocated encryption resources where possible. Sessions can be grouped into encryption channels either by using a single authorization tier per channel policy, or by requiring all clients of the group to be in physically separated service groups. Encryption channels can be released when a channel no longer serves any clients or when one or more other channels that have been assigned the same entitlement can accommodate any remaining clients.
