  • Patent number: 8355740
Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods and systems for dynamically selecting a paging-concatenation level for a page based on one or more properties of the page. An exemplary method involves, at a wireless communication network that is configured to provide service to at least one wireless-communication device, using at least one property of a page record as a basis for selecting a paging-concatenation level for the page record, and paging the wireless-communication device by transmitting a page message that includes the page record, wherein the page message is of the selected paging-concatenation level. Various properties of the page record, such as the paging-attempt status and/or the target mobile station of the page, among others, may be used to select the paging-concatenation level.

  • Patent number: 8351468
Abstract: As additional channels are added to a communication system for applications, such as standard density (SD) and eventually high density (HD) Video on Demand (VOD), additional capacity can be realized by reducing the time required to transmit content. A reduction of transmission time (or an increase of the transmission rate) can be achieved by bonding channels of the communication system. The bonded channels typically provide a statistical multiplexing gain because the additional bandwidth is treated as a large single channel for the download. Bonding channels of the communication system can provide high speed downloading of content, such as video content, far in excess of the playback rate. Using bonded channels can relax the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of a data stream, such as a video stream, over an internet protocol (IP) network.

Abstract: An apparatus for transporting digital multimedia receives signals for a plurality of single program transport streams (SPTS). Each SPTS is transmitted as a series of groups of a predefined number of transport stream packets. An input buffer that receives the packets is configured to hold only the predefined number of packets at any point in time. A table builder receives packets from the input buffer and assigns a set of unique packet identifiers to the packets from each SPTS, reconfigures each program map table in the packets, and generates a program association table for a multiple program transport stream (MPTS). The table builder retains unaltered the program clock reference in the data packets. A first-in, first-out buffer combines packets received from the table builder into a MPTS. An output stage modulates a carrier signal, such as for a television channel, with the MPTS.

  • Patent number: 8155137
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for transmitting a multicast stream in a data exchange network, at an access point (AP). It consists in analyzing (A) the multicast stream by data frames to detect the multicast address at the link (MUAx, x=2) of the multicast stream {MUF{T[MUA]}), substituting (B) in each frame at the multicast address (MUAx) at the link a unicast address (UNAy) of a potential receiver terminal (Ty) of the multicast stream to generate a substituted multicast frame (T[UNAy]), transmitting (C) instead of the multicast stream at least one unicast stream, a succession of substituted multicast frames to the terminal at the unicast address at the link. This allows taking advantage of the acknowledgement mechanisms of frames of the transmission of unicast stream for substituted multicast frames. The invention is applicable to transmission of multicast stream in WiFi or CPL network.

A network usage differential between the determined usages of the first and second packet networks may be determined, where the network usage information may distinguish communications of data packets including real-time and non-real-time content.

  • Patent number: 8078733
Abstract: An IMS-enabled control channel for an IPTV service is provided by receiving at a Serving Call/State Control Function (S-CSCF) a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) REGISTER message, the SIP REGISTER message identifying the originating user, receiving at the originating user a response from the S-CSCF indicating that the originating user has been authorized, and sending a SIP INVITE message from the S-CSCF to establish an open channel connection with a selected IPTV Application Server (AS). This open channel connection can then be used for the transmission of control messages, such as for starting play, starting recording, stopping play, etc., between the STB and the IPTV applications server, as well as for the delivery of personalized content, such as advertisements, voting responses, personalized voting triggers and targeted interactive events. By maintaining an open control channel with the IPTV AS, this offers a substantial reduction in the setup delay times for different applications.

  • Patent number: 8031744
Abstract: Full-duplex wireless communication is described. In an embodiment, a transceiver device having a transmitter circuit and a receiver circuit receives a data packet sent over a shared communication medium. In the embodiment, the transceiver reads the header of the data packet and starts transmitting an output signal on the same shared communication medium. Embodiments are described in which, whilst the transmission of the output signal is ongoing, the transceiver receives an impaired data signal which is made up of the payload of the data packet and interference from the output signal. In the embodiment, a cancellation signal is derived from the output signal, and this is combined with the impaired data signal to remove the interference and recover the payload of the data packet.
