  • Patent number: 8279743
Abstract: In an OFDM communications system receiver, channel estimates are processed to remove or reduce noise, exploiting the orthogonality of pilot patterns. The de-noised channel estimates are then used to compute inter-cell interference. The noise effects of orthogonal pilot patterns are selectively removed from channel samples in estimating inter-cell interference, depending on whether data subcarriers are subject to the same interference as pilot subcarriers, and whether data subcarriers are subject to interference from sectors with pilot patterns orthogonal to those in the transmitting sector. A further calculation removes noise from cells not identified by an orthogonal pilot sequence, which may be particularly applicable when large variations exist in the frequency domain of the propagation channel across a pilot pattern.

  • Patent number: 8019025
Abstract: Disclosed is a system and a training sequence setting method for performing frame synchronization in a wireless communication system. A received signal is affected by a frequency offset due to an oscillator mismatch between the transmitter and the receiver, which is one of the main causes of performance degradation of frame synchronization. In a prior Constant Amplitude Zero Auto-Correlation (CAZAC) sequence, the larger the frequency offset becomes, the more conspicuously the performance degradation of the frame synchronization occurs. The proposed training is designed to maintain a prior CAZAC property during a differential detection so as to perform a differential detection-based frame synchronization sequence insensitive to the frequency offset. As a result of performance verification, the proposed training sequence indicates that its performance of the frame synchronization is irrespective of the frequency offset, and has a better performance than the prior CAZAC sequence and random sequence.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a method for inserting a downlink common pilot in a TDD system and more particularly to a method for inserting a downlink common pilot in a TDD system based on OFDMA technology and the method includes two steps. A: data to be transmitted are divided into several segments to be transmitted in several continuous time periods, wherein each time period includes several slots with at least one downlink slot; B: a common pilot is inserted in one downlink slot in the time period. Therefore, the scheduling based on the frequency domain can be achieved by measuring the common pilot channel.

  • Patent number: 7852811
Abstract: In a collaborative, multiple input, multiple output wireless communication system, a transmitting device transmits a peak-limited pilot signal to a receiving device. The receiving device independently synthesizes the same pilot signal transmitted by the transmitting device. The synthesis process involves precoding the pilot signal and peak limiting the precoded pilot signal. The receiving device receives a signal r that represents the product of (i) a channel matrix H between the transmitting device and the receiving device and (ii) the peak-limited pilot signal yp(n)? plus noise ?, i.e. r=Hyp(n)?+?. The synthesized, peak-limited pilot signal can then be used by a channel estimator to determine an estimated channel matrix ?. Thus, the estimated channel matrix ? represents a closer estimate of the channel matrix H than conventional channel estimation processes and, thus, can provide better corresponding performance than conventional MIMO wireless communication systems.

Abstract: Techniques for performing phase correction for wireless communication are described. Received pilot symbols and received data symbols may be obtained from an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and/or multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission. First phase information is obtained based upon the received pilot symbols. Second phase information is obtained based upon the received data symbols. The phase of the received data symbols is corrected based upon the first and second phase information (directly and/or indirectly). For example, the phase of the received data symbols may be corrected based upon the first phase information, detection may be performed on the phase corrected data symbols to obtain estimated data symbols, the second phase information may be obtained based upon the estimated data symbols, and the phase of the estimated data symbols may be corrected based upon the second phase information. The phase correction may also be performed in other manners.

More specifically, the angle between a constellation corresponding to a received signal and a constellation corresponding to a received signal may be very efficiently estimated using any one of the possible embodiments corresponding to various aspects of the invention. After this angle has been estimated, the received signal or the expected constellation may be rotated (or de-rotated) to compensate for this angular difference. In doing so, better estimates of the information bits that are demodulated and decoded from the received signal may be made.
