Abstract: In a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) video communication method and apparatus, first and second VoIP-based terminals store video event indexes and images mapped thereto with respect to state information of a user and terminal, and establish a session using session establishment information defining the video event. The first terminal then transmits a data packet including the video event index, and the second terminal receives the data packet and outputs an image mapped to the video event index of the images stored in advance. Thus, by transmitting and receiving a predefined index alone without transmitting user and terminal states as a real time data-type image, the VoIP video communication method and apparatus prevent unnecessary waste of bandwidth in video communication.

  • Patent number: 7194261
Abstract: An access point (11) for a wireless local area network (10) transmits a beacon message during a service interval period (21). This beacon message identifies, in a preferred embodiment, those subscriber units to whom the access point will shortly be transmitting data. Subscriber units that are not identified in the beacon message and that do not have data themselves to transmit to the access point can implement a power conservation mode of operation until the next beacon message. Subscriber units that have data, such as voice information, to transmit can utilize the beacon message contents to at least estimate a likely time by when the access point will have concluded making its transmissions to the subscriber units. That estimated time can then be used to facilitate scheduling a time at which a given subscriber unit will contend for an opportunity to transmit its data to the access point.

  • Patent number: 7173944
Abstract: A digital subscriber line (DSL) communication system that utilizes the high frequency band of a standard telephone line does not require the use of a plain old telephone service (POTS) splitter in the resident's home, which provided isolation between the POTS frequency band (0 to 4 kHz) and the DSL frequency band. A digital subscriber line modem utilizes either constant envelope modulation or quadrature amplitude modulation for outputting DSL signals upstream to a central office. When a telephone in the resident's home is detected as being off-hook, then the constant envelope modulation is used by the DSL modem in order to lessen the intermodulation product distortion that results in audible noise heard by a user of the telephone. When the telephone is on-hook, then another type of modulation, such as QAM, is used to maximize the upstream data rate capability in the DSL frequency band, since any noise generated by the QAM is not a problem due to the non-use of the POTS frequency band.

  • Patent number: 7161962
Abstract: A method and apparatus of transmitting a modulated data over a digital voice network that includes voice compression. The method and apparatus determine whether a voice signal to be transmitted over the network includes a modulated data signal and then encodes or demodulates the modulated data signal and bypasses voice compression when a modulated data signal is detected. The method and apparatus may detect a modulated data signal by detecting the presence of an answer tone and then searching for a plurality of phase reversals having a particular time distance from each other in the voice signal. Once the encoded or demodulated signal is transmitted over the digital voice network, the method and apparatus of the present invention may detect whether the received signal is an encoded data signal or a demodulated data signal. Then the coded data signal may be decoded back into a modulated data signal. Likewise, the demodulated data signal may be modulated back into a modulated data signal.

  • Patent number: 7154911
Abstract: A method and apparatus for service multiplexing over telephone networks which employ bridged tap construction to allow the simultaneous delivery of different services to physically separated subscribers over a shared single pair of wires. Service is provided to one or more subscribers by connecting them to an open-circuited branch or directly with the working portion of the shared line. Service filters are used at appropriate locations in the network topology to couple or isolate the different communication channels. The wire pairs are used to simultaneously carry different services to physically separated subscribers, i.e., a portion of a common line carries one service to one location and a second service to another location. Telecommunication services are partitioned to occupy separate frequency bands in the spectrum of the transmission line using frequency division multiplexing (FDM) techniques.

Abstract: A system, method and computer readable medium for communicating data over a voice channel on a wireless device (300) is disclosed. The method on a wireless device (300) includes establishing an audio connection with a second device and providing an interface (326) for a user for sending data to the second device. The method further includes detecting the activation of the interface (326) by the user and sending a first data to the second device during the audio connection with the second device, wherein the quality of the audio connection is not affected by the sending. The method further includes receiving a second data from the second device, the second data being associated with the first data and preferably synchronizing the first data with the second data. Information, such as Vcard information, can be wirelessly exchanged between devices communicating data over a voice channel during an audio connection.

  • Patent number: 7106721
Abstract: An improved telephone system over a single telephone line within a residence or other building is disclosed, supporting exchange features and enabling easy expansion for multiple external lines. The existing telephone wiring is used as the medium for a local data communication network, carrying multiple voice channels. In each outlet, one or more voice channels are converted into a standard telephone-line interface. Life-line functionality is facilitated by using the lower band of the spectrum isolated from the data communication network, and a dedicated connector in the outlet provides access to this band. External telephone feeders are converted to digital form for interfacing to the in-home data communication network.

  • Patent number: 7106723
Abstract: A telephony system and method is provided that reduces delay and provides better utilization of upstream bandwidth in delivering packet telephony services to a plurality of subscriber lines via a cable modem system. An exemplary system includes a plurality of voice processing modules, a host processor, and a buffer. Each voice processing module receives digital voice signals from a separate set of subscriber lines, compresses the digital voice signals to generate a voice packet, and transfers the voice packet to the buffer. The host processor then assembles a packet by concatenating the voice packets and transmits the assembled packet for delivery over a data network. Because the plurality of voice processing modules process the voice packets in parallel, delay is reduced in the assembly and transmission of the assembled packet.

  • Patent number: 7106705
Abstract: For a communication system (e.g. UMTS with CDMA radio interface), the invention draws a distinction between services with high and low data rate dynamics and uses a matched type of signaling for the transport formats currently being used. The data rate of the data for a service can fluctuate greatly and/or rapidly over time (high dynamics), or may fluctuate only a little and/or slowly (low dynamics). The data for the services are transmitted via a common physical channel, with in-band signaling being used for signaling the transport format for the services with high data rate dynamics, and with signaling in a separate channel being used for the services with low data rate dynamics.

Abstract: The invention relates to a multiplexing method used in a PDH network. Standard PCM signals are received in the network element, at least some of which are multiplexed on a time-division basis into the same outbound transmission frame, the capacity of the payload portion of the frame substantially corresponding to the capacity required by N PCM signals. In order that ATM cells may be transferred more advantageously than heretofore through an existing PDH network, the multiplexing is implemented as configurable in such a way that the total capacity of the payload portion cab be divided between at least two parts of variable capacity in such a way that each part can be allocated a desired portion of the total capacity of the payload portion in accordance with the current transmission requirement.

  • Patent number: 7068684
Abstract: An information handling system comprises a TCP/IP network connecting a hub to a multimedia server and the hub to a data server, and the hub to an IP telephony device that is then coupled to a network device. Data sent from the network device is addressed for transmission to the data server and is transmitted through the IP telephony device to the TCP/IP network. The IP telephony device monitors when an amount of data being received over the network falls below a predetermined threshold. If this occurs, the IP telephony device will send a signal to the multimedia server, which will then generate a congestion signal to send to all or selected IP telephony devices in the network to throttle data being received by the IP telephony devices from their respective connected network devices.

Abstract: In a wireless communication system a method for combination transmission of packet data and low delay data. In one embodiment a parallel signaling channel provides a message to receivers indicating a target recipient of packet data. The message also identifies the transmission channels used for packet data transmissions. Each receiver may then selectively decode only packets where the message identifies the receiver as a target recipient. The data packets stored in a buffer are ignored if the target recipient is another mobile unit. In one embodiment, the message is sent concurrently with the data packet on a parallel channel. In one embodiment, the message is punctured into the high rate packet data transmission.
