  • Patent number: 6792100
Abstract: Migration of a circuit-based-switch to a packet-based-soft-switch in a SS7 telecommunications network is accomplished with no disruption to subscriber service and retains and reuses the assigned signaling point code (SPC) of the existing circuit-based-switch. The system and method inserts a new soft-switch between an SS7 signaling transfer point (STP) and the existing circuit-based-switch in a way where traffic is split incrementally off the circuit-based-switch to the soft-switch so that no administrative changes are required at either the STP or the existing circuit-based-switch. The soft-switch is gradually cutover to act as a proxy STP and tandem switch for the existing circuit-based-switch and routes all calls to and from the network on behalf of the existing switch. The system makes use of multiple internal networks of the soft-switch to accomplish the controlled routing of bi-directional traffic.

Abstract: A method for providing automatic restoration of network access for user lines within a communication system. The user lines interface with groups of transmission lines that include dedicated transmission lines which are connected to the user lines, idle transmission lines and reserved transmission lines. The method includes steps for making a number of transmission lines among the groups of transmission lines available for user lines which have a dedicated transmission line in a group of transmission lines that fails and for coupling each of such user lines to a respective available transmission line. The method may also include steps for delaying the coupling of such user lines if a sufficient number of transmission lines are not available.

Abstract: Streams of data packets and timing pulses are received from a source. Time stamping of the data packets is carried out largely independent of individual timing pulses. A normalised pulse time of arrival is calculated, preferably as a running average over the most recent arrivals. Times of applicability for the content of the packets can then be calculated according to a predetermined relationship between the order of arrival and of corresponding pulses and packets. Data acquisition may take place from an external or internal data source. An example external source is a GPS receiver.

Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for re-synchronizing a group of B channels in an ISDN network using the BONDING Mode 1 specification. Re-synchronization is achieved without the need to first disconnect the affected group of B channels from the network. Thus, the reliability of the bonded channels is improved while maintaining a simpler architecture than those associated with BONDING Modes 2 and 3. The solution offers improved channel reliability, improved network performance and reduced network load when channel re-synchronization becomes necessary.

  • Patent number: 6553001
Abstract: A technique for inclusion within, e.g., ISDN DTE, and use in conjunction with an ISDN terminal adapter (as DCE) for automatically providing ISDN switch type detection and SPID configuration. Specifically, switch type detection occurs by analyzing D-channel ISDN initialization messages received from the local ISDN switch as well as, subsequently, where appropriate, responding D-channel ISDN messages, received from the switch to specific ISDN messages sent by the adapter. If the switch type is one that requires a SPID, a SPID is formed using a predefined generic NI-1 format, for each B-channel through which communication is being established, and sent to the switch, using an NI-1 terminal initialization request, to invoke initialization.

Abstract: In a hybrid telecommunication system, a varying volume of data is transmitted between message transmission planes of telecommunication interfaces of the hybrid telecommunication system, each case it is transmitted with the least transmission complexity in the message transmission planes and, in a singe coherent data block particularly when the varying volume of data exceeds a volume of data that can be maximally transmitted between identical message transmission planes of the telecommunication interfaces. A transmission plane-specific information element in dependence on the varying volume of data at least twice, one behind the other, is used for the transmission of the volume of data in the data block.

  • Patent number: 6522635
Abstract: A communication system includes a communication switching office having a transceiver for receiving/transmitting a message from/to a data terminal using a communication system, and a management system including a central controller receiving/transmitting the message from/to the communication switching office. The central controller is responsive to the message received from the data terminal, and receives data in the message received from the data terminal. The data terminal transmits to the management system on a message channel. The message channel includes multiple messages from multiple data terminals. The management system receives the multiple messages per message channel or TDM group, and allocates message channel bandwidth for each of the multiple messages to the data terminal responsive to the data terminal call request received on the signalling channel.

  • Patent number: 6522660
Abstract: A channel reservation control system which reserves data channels in an appropriate manner to ensure the subsequent call set-up operations in automatic call distribution services. A channel allocation unit determines how many data channels should be reserved for a specific group of subscribers who may wish to use such reserved bandwidth. Then, a reservation request transmission unit makes a provisional reservation for as many data channels as determined by the channel allocation unit, and transmits a reservation request message to initiate the reservation of those data channels. Upon receipt of this reservation request message, a recipient-side reservation unit establishes channel reservation on the side of call recipients by securing the requested data channels for exclusive use by the specific group of subscribers.

Abstract: The currently defined industry standard framing structure for 2B1Q ISDN signaling, at 160 kilobaud, provides 128 kbps for a customer (B1, B2) data channel, and 16 kbps for a data (D) channel. Of the remaining 16 kbps non payload bandwidth, 4 kbps are used for overhead maintenance data. Eight kbps of the remaining 12 kbps of non payload bandwidth, that customarily transport a repeated framing pattern, are usurped for the transport of an auxiliary compressed (from 64 KHz to 8 KHz) digitized voice POTS channel, that is sufficient to transport toll quality voice. The remaining framing pattern bandwidth is adequate prevent an unacceptable reduction in bit error rate.

  • Patent number: RE38472
Abstract: A multiplexing system for ISDN circuits. Multiplexers in the system include data terminals, voice interfaces having voice trunks, high speed digital circuits and ISDN circuits, together with a control channel interface which connects trunking circuits by controlling calls on the control channel. When an outgoing voice call originates, data information from data terminals voice is multiplexed with compressed information from a voice interface and transmitted to trunking circuits. When calls originate, the control channel controls calls and connects them with trunking circuits. When using ISDN circuits, after setting up a communication channel for the circuits, a CPU controls calls to multiplex ISDN circuits on the control channel. By this structure decreasing the multiplexing ratio due to voice multiplexing call control on ISDN circuits can be eliminated when linking multiplexers with communication channels having high speed digital circuits and ISDN circuits.
