Abstract: A new method of performing interference estimation to allow the data packets to be efficiently delivered in an OFDM system. The interference estimation is performed on average over each frame for each mobile station individually in both frequency and time domains. Based on the estimated interference, the CIR can be determined by the BTS based on channel response estimates made by the BTS, or by the MS based on channel response estimates made for the uplink assuming a symmetrical channel. Numerical results show that the CIR estimation error could be very small if a sub-channel is considered as the minimum transmission unit. In terms of the aggregate throughput, the interference estimation method can provide a significant gain.

Abstract: A multi-tone transceiver including: a transform component, a tone selector, an error detector, an aggregator and an oscillator. The transform component transforms received communications from the time domain to the frequency domain. The tone selector selects a sub-set of the received tones which exhibit an elevated signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as a clock recovery tone set (CRTS) and drops and add tones to the CRTS as required by changes in the SNR of the individual tones. The error detector detects phase errors in each received tone of the CRTS. The aggregator calculates an average aggregate phase error from all tones in the CRTS. The oscillator controls clocking of the transceiver. The oscillator is responsive to the average aggregate phase error to adjust a clock phase in a direction which reduces a phase error with a clock on the opposing transceiver.

Abstract: A transmitter includes a first amplifier to amplify an in-phase oscillator signal to produce an in-phase mixing signal and a second amplifier to amplify a quadrature-phase oscillator signal to produce a quadrature-phase mixing signal. A first mixer mixes the in-phase mixing signal with a first information signal to produce a first output signal. A second mixer mixes the quadrature-phase mixing signal with a second information signal to produce a second output signal. The first output signal and an inverted second output signal are summed to produce a transmitter output signal that includes an image signal caused by a phase imbalance between the in-phase and quadrature-phase mixing signals. An image monitor monitors the image signal and reduces or eliminates the phase imbalance by independently adjusting a phase of the in-phase mixing signal and/or a phase of the quadrature-phase mixing signal. Abstract: Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has become a popular transmission method for high speed wireless radio transmission, due to its potential for low complexity of transmitters and receivers. A method and apparatus are contemplated for cancelling additive sinusoidal disturbances of a known frequency in OFDM receivers which arise e.g. from clock signals that are present for frequency reference, mixer control, and A/D converter control, as well as harmonics and mixing products of those periodic signals, coupling into some point in the receiver chain and appearing as rotating complex exponentials superimposed to complex baseband receive signals. According to the inventive method and apparatus an estimation of an amplitude and phase of a disturbing superimposed tone with a known frequency is obtained and the amplitude and phase estimation is used to cancel the spurious tone preventing a degradation of receiver sensitivity while achieving low implementation complexity.

Abstract: To select a rate for a transmitter in a communication system, a receiver obtains a channel response estimate and a received SINR estimate for the transmitter, e.g., based on a pilot received from the transmitter. The receiver computes a hypothesized SINR for the transmitter based on the channel response estimate and the received SINR estimate. The receiver then selects a rate for the transmitter based on (1) the hypothesized SINR and (2) characterized statistics of noise and interference at the receiver for the transmitter, which may be given by a probability density function (PDF) of SINR loss with respect to the hypothesized SINR. A look-up table of rate versus hypothesized SINR may be generated a priori for the PDF of SINR loss. The receiver may then apply the hypothesized SINR for the transmitter to the look-up table, which then provides the rate for the transmitter.

Abstract: The present disclosure proposes a method for channel estimation with excellent accuracy for a large variety of channel conditions and with low computational complexity. The method represents a specific combination of a plurality of linear channel estimation schemes. A resulting hybrid channel estimator may retain the low complexity of the constituent estimators while performing same or better than each of the constituent estimators. The proposed simplified hybrid estimator may provide very close error rate performance to the optimal Wiener estimator over a wide range of channel scenarios.

Abstract: Transmission power relative to a propagation path having a variation in gain is controlled to increase communication channel capacity, and a data rate is controlled in accordance with the variation of the increased communication channel capacity. In order to increase the communication channel capacity, the transmission power is determined so that the sum of noise power (=received noise power/propagation path gain) converted into one at a transmitter and the transmission power becomes constant. As a result, contrary to the background art, the transmission power is controlled to be reduced when the propagation path gain decreases and to be increased when the propagation path gain increases.

  • Patent number: 7751470
Abstract: Time correlation of signal to distortion characteristics is achieved by acquiring time domain data for a frequency band representing a communication signal, the communication signal having multiple channels. The time domain data is simultaneously converted to frequency and demodulation domain data in sequential time blocks. The frequency and demodulation domain data are processed to obtain respectively frequency and demodulation domain measurements. The resulting measurements are displayed simultaneously as a function of time for all the time blocks and/or for a selected one of the time blocks. An ACLRogram display provides a display having a time axis and a frequency axis in the form of bars spanning the frequency band for each time block with each bar being divided into frequency sub-bands representing a main channel and adjacent side channels, the shading of each segment of the bar representing a measurement value for that segment.

Abstract: Methods are described for identifying a dominant impairment on a communication channel impaired by an interference issue. The methods include systematic examination of total power loading, systematic examination of signal power reduction, statistical examination of communication channel noise power, and systematic examination of interleaver effectiveness. Each relates to automatically diagnosing and characterizing distortion-based interference issues by monitoring the performance of a communication channel during a testing procedure. These methods enable a technician or engineer to remotely diagnose distortion-based interference issues relatively quickly without having to use external test equipment and without having to deploy technicians to various locations within the cable plant. A system by which these methods can be implemented is also disclosed.

Abstract: The present invention implements a method and system for dynamically adapting the modulation and coding scheme for radio links in a wireless communications network based on a retransmission environment model in order to maximize throughput and most efficiently allocate bandwidth resources. The present invention encompasses a refined calculus and methodology for deriving the link adaptation thresholds in a retransmission environment using a complex model and analysis of the retransmission environment. The present invention holds particular application for wireless data communications as opposed to real time data services because it is based on a retransmission model applicable primarily for data services. A critical component of this new link adaptation system is a “no transmission” cutoff mode that is selected for SIR below a base threshold value. This new mode prevents system instability and misallocation of bandwidth in a wireless communication system.
