  • Patent number: 9768989
Abstract: A simplified but accurate soft-symbol determination process represents one of the advantages provided by the example embodiments disclosed herein. In this regard, a mapping function “maps” symbol estimates to corresponding soft symbol values, which may be used in interference mitigation, joint detection processing, etc. Whether the mapping function is implemented on-the-fly as a live calculation or is embodied in a look-up table, it advantageously operates on the symbol estimates directly, rather than requiring the derivation of corresponding soft bit values or the like, and it maps each symbol estimate to its “expected value,” i.e., the weighted sum of constellation point probabilities. Moreover, the mapping function may be changed dynamically—e.g., by using different look-up tables—to account for changing reception conditions and/or different modulation schemes or other signal parameters associated with the symbols being estimated and mapped to soft symbol values.

  • Patent number: 9544094
Abstract: Block-encoded transmissions of a multi-antenna terminal unit are effectively detected in the presence of co-channel interfering transmissions when the base station has a plurality of antennas, and interference cancellation is combined with maximum likelihood decoding. More specifically, the signals received at the base station antennas are combined in a linear combination that relates to the channel coefficients between the various transmitting terminal units and the base antennas. By selecting proper coefficients for the linear combination and choosing probable transmitted signals that minimize a minimum mean squared error function, the signals of the various terminal units are canceled when detecting the signal of a particular unit. In another embodiment of the invention, the basic approach is used to obtain an initial estimate of the signals transmitted by one terminal unit, and the contribution of those signals is removed from the received signals prior to detecting the signals of other terminal units.

  • Patent number: 9225468
Abstract: Systems and methods for detecting data in a received signal are provided. A signal that represents a set of data symbols is received. Possible bit values for a single data symbol of the set of data symbols are determined based on the received signal. Possible bit values for other data symbols of the set of data symbols are determined based on the possible bit values for the single data symbol. The determining of the possible bit values for the other data symbols includes determining a first value for each bit included in the other data symbols. The first value is determined by combining i) a first soft metric indicating a likelihood of a state of the bit given the received signal, and ii) a second soft metric representing an a priori probability (APP) for the bit. The first soft metric is not based on the APP for the bit.
