  • Patent number: 7986716
Abstract: Systems and methods for transferring data over a voice channel during a voice communication connection (e.g., a telephone call) using DTMF signals over a single voice communication channel. The arbitrary data can include contact information, graphics, photographs, streaming media, interactive game information, location information, cached web pages, audio clips, etc. Some or all of the standard DTMF signals can be uniquely mapped to groups of bits. For example, the standard DTMF signals for numbers “0” through “7” can be mapped to the corresponding three-bit binary representations of those numbers. The arbitrary data can be placed in a container with meta-data indicating the start and end of the data, the type of the data, the amount of data, error correction/detection information, etc. The receiver can prevent the DTMF signals from being converted to audio signals to spare any human listeners from hearing the DTMF signals.

Abstract: An ability to compress packets is announced from a customer edge router (CE) to other CEs through a routing protocol packet. An announcement of that ability is received from another CE through a routing protocol packet. A compression technique is then matched. The CE receives compression information from the other CE in a routing protocol packet, and determines that a compression technique identified therein matches any compression technique the CE is programmed to use. The CE then flags packets transmitted from/received by the CE to be compressed/decompressed according to the matched compression technique. Alternatively, the CE may match by transmitting compression information identifying a compression technique to the another CE in a routing protocol packet; the another CE receives the routing protocol packet and determines that a compression technique identified in the compression information of the routing protocol packet matches any compression technique the another CE is programmed to use.

Abstract: A system for implementing a relatively reliable wireless transmission protocol for a processor-based system includes generating commands associated with a predetermined number of command identifiers. Thus, no more than the predetermined number of commands may be issued until a responding device responds with a previously used command identifier. When a device responds that it has received a command with a given identifier, that identifier then becomes available for reuse. Thereafter, a new command may be issued by re-using that command identifier. In this way, the system may keep track of all the outstanding commands, ensuring that a lost command will be detected. By limiting the number of command identifiers, the requirements of the receiving and transmitting devices in terms of processing power and/or memory capacity may be effectively limited.

  • Patent number: 7272136
Abstract: A signalling tone detector for use in a communications network for the detection of dual frequency multi-tone (DTMF) pairs of signal tones in a time division multiplex (TDM) signal. The detector comprises first and second arrays of adaptive notch filters corresponding to the rows and columns of a subscriber's pushbutton key set. Each said notch filter responds to a respective signal tone by the generation of a corresponding output signal. A logic circuit identifies from a combination of output signals from the adaptive notch filters the presence or absence of a pair of signal tones and, when the presence of a pair of signal tones has been identified, for decodes that pair of tones to corresponding digit information. The detector is used in an arrangement for compressing and packetising TDM traffic for transport over a connectionless network. To prevent distortion, the DTMF tones are decoded to digit information prior to transport over the connectionless network.

Abstract: A method of dynamic spectral bandwidth allocation in home phone-line networking (HPN). An HPN terminal is configured to sense transmission activity in a frequency sub-band corresponding to a broad-band high-speed service, such as ADSL. If no activity is detected, the HPN terminal uses the sub-band for communication with other HPN terminals. As a result, major impediments to HPN networking, such as crosstalk from neighboring home networks and signal attenuation due to the unpredictable topology of the in-home wiring, are minimized or possibly mitigated. In addition, the capacity accessible to HPN terminals may be increased. Consequently, the robustness of HPN networking is improved and higher data throughput rates may be supported.
