Patent number: 6226904Abstract: An iron guard for holding, cooling, and storing an electric iron after use thereof. The iron guard includes a base member and upwardly extending side members. A plurality of flanges extend inwardly from the side members and are capable of slidable engagement with the electric iron to support the soleplate in spaced relation to the base member, thereby providing a gap between the soleplate and the base member to minimize heat transfer from the soleplate to the iron guard.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1999Date of Patent: May 8, 2001Assignee: Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex, Inc.Inventors: Martin Brady, Ramon R. Patent number: 6172335Abstract: A carpet seaming iron having an internal electronic temperature control circuit including a solid state temperature sensor, a power controller, and a solid state switching device is disclosed. The iron does not use a thermostat for temperature control. The iron includes a baseplate, an electrically powered heating element, a heat shield, a handle and the internally mounted control circuit. The control circuit includes a means for providing a signal to the power controller corresponding to a desired temperature of the iron. A solid state temperature sensor sends a signal to the power controller corresponding to the baseplate temperature. The power controller controls the switching device so that the amount of power supplied to the heating element is proportional to the difference between the baseplate temperature and the desired temperature. Thus as the baseplate becomes hotter, less power is supplied to the heating element, and the seaming iron maintains a stable and precise temperature.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1999Date of Patent: January 9, 2001Assignee: Orcon CorporationInventor: Gary Goodrich

Patent number: 5535534Abstract: A burn prevention device of an iron. The device comprising a shielding element adaptable to cover the heated edge of the heating plate of an iron, and an actuating device to urge the movement of the shielding element to either cover the heated edge or restore it to its original position.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1995Date of Patent: July 16, 1996Assignee: Kwan-Tao LiInventors: Kwan-Tao Li, Elton Shiou

Patent number: 5333401Abstract: A cooling structure for an electric iron having a sole plate, a heater carried at the sole plate, an electric circuit for the heater, and a housing mounted on the sole plate, and further including a lower flow path defining sheet and an upper flow path defining sheet, with the lower and upper sheets mounted on the sole plate with a substantially uniform spacing between the lower and upper sheets, with the lower sheet engaging the sole plate around the periphery of the lower sheet, and with the sheets being generally flat with downwardly sloping leading, side and trailing edges.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1993Date of Patent: August 2, 1994Assignee: Roberts Consolidated Industries, Inc.Inventor: James H. Patent number: 5294284Abstract: A heat shield for the upper surface of a carpet seaming tape iron, preferably formed of polytetrafluorethylene or other heat resistant synthetic material, covers only so much of the upper surface of the iron as is needed to assure that the carpet backing coming into contact with the iron will not be overheated. Since some heating of the carpet backing is desirable in the hot melt carpet seaming tape operation, the forward and rear surfaces of the iron are left at least partially exposed so that the carpet backing will have some direct contact with the hot metal heat transferring surface at the top of the iron's body. The heat shield is contoured so as to fit closely down against the surfaces of the carpet seaming tape iron, avoiding any unnecessary deflection of the carpet edges during the seaming operation and providing an integral feel to the assembly. Assembly may be as original equipment or as a retrofittable addition to an iron.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1992Date of Patent: March 15, 1994Assignee: Roofing Equipment, Inc.Inventor: Keith A. Patent number: 4388743Abstract: A low thermal conductivity removable heat insulating cover for a cooking utensil lid handle has a hand grip portion for substantially surrounding the lid handle at least along a central portion thereof with a pair of closely adjacent portions depending downwardly from the hand grip portion toward the lid surface and with a protective portion adapted to lie closely adjacent the lid surface covering a region of that surface to form a barrier for preventing a user's hand from contacting the lid when grasping the hand grip portion is disclosed. In one form the protective portion comprises first and second lateral extensions of the ends of the closely adjacent portions remote from the hand grip portion with the cover being formed as a section of an extrusion of substantially uniform cross-sectional configuration. The closely adjacent portions may be releasably joined together by a rib and groove arrangement along the adjoining surfaces thereof.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1980Date of Patent: June 21, 1983Assignee: Lincoln Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventors: David L. Hellinger, Gordon D. Bell, Gregory N. Brown, Robert J. Kennedy, Jr., Kendall S. Smith, II

Patent number: 4366596Abstract: A one piece heat insulating cover for a closed loop cooking utensil handle is disclosed having a body of resilient rubber-like material with low thermal conductivity with a hand grip portion for substantially surrounding the utensil handle and a protective portion which lies adjacent a portion of the utensil main body between the utensil handle and the main body when the hand grip portion is in position about the utensil handle so that the protective portion provides a barrier to prevent a user's hand from contacting the utensil body when grasping the hand grip portion. The hand grip portion is formed as a generally U-shaped hollow tubular member with the protective portion extending between the ends of the U and with the hollow tubular member being slit along an edge thereof between the ends of the U to facilitate placement and removal of the tubular member about the handle.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1980Date of Patent: January 4, 1983Assignee: Lincoln Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventors: David L. Hellinger, Gordon D. Bell, Gregory N. Brown, Robert J. Kennedy, Jr., Kendall S. Smith, II
