Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for introducing white noises into a digital audio signal so that there is progressive and cumulative degradation in audio quality after each successive reproduction of the audio sound signal in a fashion analogous to analog audio reproduction. The invention provides a white noise generator, and a digital entroping unit. In a preferred embodiment, the white noise generator is implemented by a hardware random number generator. The digital entroping unit controls the magnitude of white noise desired based on a random number generated by the random number generator, and adds the white noise to the input audio sound signal to produce a degraded audio sound signal. The magnitude of white noise can be controlled by using various masking and formatting of random number data.

Abstract: Visually imperceptible distortion, from watermarking or compression, desired for embedding into frames of a video sequence is computed. Within each spatiotemporal region of the frames, points are counted, which have feature information amplitude that at least equals the desired distortion. In each region, a fraction of the points with magnitudes at least equal to desired distortion is determined, in relation to the total number of points and compared to a threshold. Regions with fractions at least equal to the threshold are identified. Visual aspects of features in the identified regions are analyzed for salience related to drawing visual attention. The salience is compared to a threshold. Identified regions that do not exceed the salience threshold may be selected as candidates for hiding the watermark. Spatial and temporal contrast values may relate to the salience, as well as luminance values computed therewith.

  • Patent number: 8055903
Abstract: A method is disclosed that enables the transmission of a digital message along with a corresponding information signal, such as audio or video. The supplemental information contained in digital messages can be used for a variety of purposes, such as enabling or enhancing packet authentication. In particular, a telecommunications device that is processing an information signal from its user, such as a speech signal, encrypts the information signal by performing a bitwise exclusive-or of an encryption key stream with the information signal stream. The device, such as a telecommunications endpoint, then intersperses the bits of the digital message throughout the encrypted signal in place of those bits overwritten, in a process referred to as “watermarking.” The endpoint then transmits the interspersed digital message bits as part of a composite signal that also comprises the encrypted information bits. No additional bits are appended to the packet to be transmitted, thereby addressing compatibility issues.

Abstract: A method is disclosed that enables the transmission of a digital message along with a corresponding media information signal, such as audio or video. A telecommunications device that is processing the information signal from its user, such as a speech signal, encodes the information signal by using a model-based compression coder. One such device is a telecommunications endpoint. Then, based on an evaluation of the perceptual significance of each encoded bit, or on some other meaningful characteristic of the signal, the endpoint's processor: (i) determines which encoded bits can be overwritten; and (ii) intersperses the digital message bits throughout the encoded signal in place of the overwritten bits. The endpoint then transmits those digital message bits as part of the encoded information signal. In this way, no additional bits are appended to the packet to be transmitted, thereby addressing the issue of compatibility with existing protocols and firewalls.

  • Patent number: 7664263
Abstract: A method for combining transfer functions with predetermined key creation. In one embodiment, digital information, including a digital sample and format information, is protected by identifying and encoding a portion of the format information. Encoded digital information, including the digital sample and the encoded format information, is generated to protect the original digital information. In another embodiment, a digital signal, including digital samples in a file format having an inherent granularity, is protected by creating a predetermined key. The predetermined key is comprised of a transfer function-based mask set to manipulate data at the inherent granularity of the file format of the underlying digitized samples.

Abstract: A process for distributing digital audio sequences according to a nominal flux format including a succession of fields, each of which includes at least one digital block clusterizing a selected number of coefficients corresponding to single audio elements that are digitally coded inside the flux and utilized by audio decoders that are able to play it to be able to decode it correctly, including a preparatory step including modifying at least one of the coefficients, and a transmission step including a primary flux in compliance with a nominal format including blocks that were modified during the preparatory step and by a route separated from the primary flux by an additional piece of digital information which allows reconstruction of the original flux starting with a calculation, on recipient equipment, as a function of the primary flux and of the additional information.

  • Patent number: 7606366
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for embedding or embedding digital data into an analog host or cover signal. A distributed signal feature of the cover signal in a particular domain (time, frequency or space) is calculated and compared with a set of predefined quantization values corresponding to an information symbol to be encoded. The amount of change required to modify the signal feature to the determined target quantization value is calculated and the cover signal is modified accordingly to so change the feature value over a predefined interval. Information symbols are extracted by the opposite process. In one embodiment, the predefined value is a short term autocorrelation value of the cover signal.

  • Publication number: 20090208008

  • Patent number: 7568100
Abstract: An apparatus and method for encoding and decoding additional information into a stream of digitized samples in an integral manner. The information is encoded using special keys. The information is contained in the samples, not prepended or appended to the sample stream. The method makes it extremely difficult to find the information in the samples if the proper keys are not possessed by the decoder. The method does not cause a significant degradation to the sample stream. The method is used to establish ownership of copyrighted digital multimedia content and provide a disincentive to piracy of such material.

Abstract: A digital watermark embedding device and method uses block correlation to perform motion detection on temporally sequential digital video signals after performing preprocessing such as division into blocks. The device and method evaluate a plurality of motion information which are calculated for blocks by using a technique such as determination by majority or weighting. Based on the detected motion information, by moving a digital watermark pattern to follow a picture, the digital watermark information can be superimposed on an input digital video signal so as to match human visual characteristics by using a technique such as emphasizing a portion on which the human eye is easily turned.

  • Patent number: 7545936
Abstract: Two data units are selected from main information, such as MIDI data, into which additional information is to be incorporated, to calculate a difference between respective values of the two data units. A particular data segment to be incorporated into one of the MIDI data units is selected from a group of data of additional information. The size of the data segment to be incorporated into one of the data units may be either one bit or two or more bits. Substitute data to replace the content of one MIDI data unit is generated on the basis of a predetermined function using, as variables, the data-related value and a value of the particular data segment, and the content of the data unit corresponding to a predetermined one of the two MIDI data units is replaced by the generated substitute data. Thus, through such an electronic watermarking technique, any desired additional information can be incorporated into the MIDI data without changing the MIDI data format.
