Patent number: 6259798Abstract: An electronics/heat sink housing used in combination with a loudspeaker or powered speaker having an enclosure, a passive radiator, and an electronics package. The electronics/heat sink housing includes a planar back plate, a top plate, two side plates, and a bottom connector plate. The housing is mounted directly onto a rear panel of the speaker enclosure over the electronics package and passive radiator of the speaker. A plurality of slots are formed within the electronics/heat sink housing, preferably along the side plates and top plate of the housing, where they are bent relative to the back plate. A plurality of larger slots also may be formed along the side plates of the housing. The total area of these slots is greater than the area of the passive radiator, so that the enclosure does not interfere with air movement and sound pressure wave propagation from the passive radiator. Air movement caused by the passive radiator serves to enhance the thermal cooling of the electronic components.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1998Date of Patent: July 10, 2001Assignee: Mackie Designs Inc.Inventors: Calvin C. Patent number: 5940522Abstract: An audio speaker, the voice coil of which is passively cooled by using at least one of the speaker cone and spider as a bellows to draw air in and to push air out through a first vent passing through the voice coil and a second vent, connected to the first vent through an air flow path, which second vent is formed in a basket of the speaker which is formed of a material having good heat transfer properties. Air drawn into the speaker through the first vent removes heat from the voice coil and is heated thereby. This air is mixed with cooler air drawn in through the second vent which cooler air is expelled through both vents under appropriate action of the bellows. Partially cooled air expelled through the first vent further cools the voice coil and expelled through the second vent, which is also partially heated, has heat removed therefrom as it passes through the second vent formed in the basket, the relatively large area of the basket passed through by this air functioning as a heat sink.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1998Date of Patent: August 17, 1999Assignee: Boston Acoustics, Inc.Inventors: David Cahill, Aaron Linn, Derek Hatchett

Patent number: 5920638Abstract: The present invention relates to a structure of speaker which includes a disk body directly connected to the opening of a sound coil in a speaker. The disk body has a couple of reinforcing heat-sinking rings, and the opening edge of disk body is connected with the belly plate of speaker. The speaker of such structure is effective to radiate heat produced from the sound coil through the direct connection of the disk body with the sound coil and due to the light-weighted and thin metallic disk body having effective heat radiation so as to prolong the duration of play as well as the life span of the speaker. The end of the disk body projecting in the sound coil and the other end connected to the belly plate increases the capacity of resistance of the vibration wave and therefore one single speaker may provide an output as a tweeter and a woofer. The disk body directly connecting to the sound coil may give high fidelity of the vibration wave arising from movement of sound coil so as to improve sound quality.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1997Date of Patent: July 6, 1999Inventor: Jung-Kuo Tsai
