Patent number: 6149337Abstract: A ball and socket bearing assembly adapted to receive the vertical post of a rudder installed in the stern of a boat. The assembly consists of a molded journal box having a spheroidal cavity therein defining a socket in which is nested a ball-like bearing formed of UHMW polyethylene or of a material having similar non-stick properties, the post passing through an axial bore in the bearing. The assembly is produced by placing the preformed bearing in a mold to create an annular space between the bearing and the inner wall of the mold. This space is then flooded with a curable liquid resin monomer whereby when the monomer is polymerized and rigidified, it does not bond to the non-stick bearing. The bearing is therefore free to rotate in the cavity and align itself with the rudder post regardless of the degree to which the post deviates from the vertical as a result of hydrodynamic or other forces imposed on the rudder.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1997Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignee: Tides Marine, Inc.Inventors: John R. Patent number: 5573336Abstract: An annular metallic support member has a cylindrical surface mountable within a bore of the spherical plain bearing outer ring or bearing housing such that a conical surface of the metallic support member overlies the spherical member. An annular elastomeric seal lip is mounted on the conical surface of the metallic support member, and an elastomeric seal body is mounted on the conical surface of the metallic support member, axially inward of the elastomeric seal lip, such that the elastomeric seal lip and elastomeric seal body contact the spherical member. The elastomeric seal body may have grooves for supplying lubricant to the elastomeric seal lip.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1995Date of Patent: November 12, 1996Assignee: The Torrington CompanyInventor: Michael E. Patent number: 5058867Abstract: A cylindrical vibration damping bushing is provided which has an outer cylinder, an inner cylinder coaxially disposed within the outer cylinder, and having a radially outwardly expanded portion in its axially central portion, a pair of vibration damping rubber members press-fitted between the outer cylinder and the inner cylinder from both ends of the outer cylinder, and a pair of inserts, each being made of a resin material having good slidability and embedded in an inside end portion of each vibration damping rubber member so that an inside end surface thereof abut on each other. Each insert has a concave surface having a configuration conforming to that of the spherical outer surface of the expanded portion of the inner cylinder to enable the inserts to be slid on the spherical outer surface of the expanded portion.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1991Date of Patent: October 22, 1991Assignee: Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd.Inventors: Katsuya Hadano, Masato Ueno

Patent number: 5033872Abstract: A bushing has a cylindrical retaining member and an inner cylinder having an expanded portion which radially outwardly expands at its axially central portion to define a spherical outer surface. A pair of ring-shaped inserts, each having a concave inner surface, are slidably disposed in contact with the spherical outer surface of the expanded portion. A pair of outer cylinders are press-fitted into the retaining member from open ends thereof. An inside end surface of each outer cylinder abuts on an outside surface of each insert, thereby pushing each insert toward the expanded portion of the inner cylinder. A pair of cylindrical sealing members are disposed between the outer cylinders and the inner cylinder for providing a seal therebetween. An inside edge of the outer surface of each sealing member is bonded to the inner surface of each outer cylinder, and an outside edge of the inner surface of each sealing member is in sealing engagement with the outer surface of the inner cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 1990Date of Patent: July 23, 1991Assignee: Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masato Ueno, Katsuya Hadano, Mikio Itou

Patent number: 4761083Abstract: A compound bearing consisting of an outer and an inner member movable relative to each other and between which are disposed load carrying annular members. The load carrying annular members comprise a pair of elastomeric rings held between the outer and inner members under compression, and a metallic ring insert disposed between and separating the two elastomeric rings. A narrow clearance is provided between the peripheral surface of the metallic ring insert and the inner surface of the bearing outer member, and between the metallic ring inner surface and the inner member peripheral surface. Normal loads are taken and absorbed by the elastomeric rings, while overloads and shock loads are taken by the metallic ring insert.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1980Date of Patent: August 2, 1988Assignee: O & S Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Joseph E. Patent number: 4649853Abstract: A siren comprises a compressed air supply which is deflected by stationary deflectors to exit radially through stator ports. A rotor with spaced ports rotates between the stator and deflector thereby opening and closing the stator ports. Stationary vanes are disposed at circumferentially spaced locations, and constitute together with the deflector plate and stator and rotor housing, plenums. There are fewer rotor ports than stator ports, which generates an out-of-phase acoustical pattern which creates an acoustic combination from the stator ports of an acoustic output at a distance from the siren which is more uniform spatially. The thermoplastic seal between the stator and the rotor has minimal clearance under operating conditions having been run-in and plastically deformed at a temperature higher than for normal operation.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1985Date of Patent: March 17, 1987Assignee: Southern California Edison Company, Inc.Inventor: John G.
