  • Patent number: 10371906
Abstract: A technique for delivery of a divergent laser beam emitted with a free-space laser fiber facet, the beam having an optical power, into an optical waveguide. An optical axis of the laser beam is aligned approximately along a propagation Z direction into the optical waveguide. The fiber facet is located in a first plane perpendicular to the Z direction. The waveguide includes an input, direction, and X-Y position of the input in a second plane. The waveguide includes fluctuations in a X-Y-Z position of the input and fluctuations in direction. The laser beam is transformed into a collimated beam by re-directing a propagation of the laser beam, shifting the laser beam parallel to the Z direction, and focusing the laser beam into the input. The speed of transformation of the laser beam is greater than an instant speed of the fluctuations. A maximum optical power is delivered into the waveguide.

  • Patent number: 6535135
Abstract: A tapered roller bearing having its rollers arranged in two rows within an outer race and around an inner race contains a sensing device that radiates signals which reflect conditions within the bearing. In one embodiment, the outer race is unitary and the sensing device is wireless and self-powered and includes a mounting ring that is fitted to the outer race between the raceways along which the rollers roll. The ring has embedded within it several sensors for monitoring bearing conditions such as temperature and vibrations. The ring also contains a radio transmitter, a microprocessor to which the sensors are connected, and a power supply for producing the electrical energy required to operate the processor and the transmitter. The electric power is generated by means of electromechanical energy conversion using permanent magnets, armature winding and a target wheel that is captured between and rotates with the two cones.

  • Patent number: 6501382
Abstract: A product with an automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) device associated with a physical measurement, authentication code or operating condition of the product is disclosed. A bearing with an embedded transponder is illustratively described. The transponder contains data specific to the manufactured bearing, such as physical measurements or identification numbers.

  • Patent number: 6312161
Abstract: An end cap holds an antifriction bearing on a journal at the end of an axle, clamping the inner race of the bearing tightly against a backing ring that is located around the journal. The end cap has an cross wall which extends across the end of the journal and an axial wall formed integral with the cross wall and extended over the journal to provide an abutment surface which is presented toward the inner race of the bearing. The cross wall contains bolt holes through which cap screws pass to thread into the journal and secure the end cap on the journal. The end wall possesses its thickest cross section in regions between the bolt holes and its thinnest cross section in regions generally surrounding the bolt holes. This distributes the clamping force exerted by the cap screws more uniformly over the abutment surface at the end of the axial wall.

  • Patent number: 6189456
Abstract: An improved railway car axle having a shaft body with a pair of wheel seats and a pair of journals respectively disposed adjacent to opposite ends of the axle. A dust guard seat may be located between each wheel seat and the associated journal. Also, fillets are preferably provided at transitions between the dust guard seat and the wheel seat and the dust guard seat and the journal respectively. The journals will preferably be generally cylindrical and may have a nominal outside diameter of approximately six and one half inches and a nominal length of approximately eight and three fourth inches. The dust guard seats separating the respective journals and wheel seats may have a length of approximately three and one half inches. Finally, the wheel seats preferably have a nominal outside diameter of nine and one fourth inches.

  • Patent number: 6161962
Abstract: An antifriction bearing (A) that enables a shaft (4) to rotate with minimum friction in a housing (2) includes a generally cylindrical outer race (46) located in an opening (12) in the housing, an inner race (48) located around the shaft, and rolling elements (50) arranged in rows between raceways on the outer and inner races. The outer race has a cylindrical exterior surface (56), whereas the opening in which the bearing is located has a flat wall (14, 16). A stabilizing block (C) may be attached to the outer race against its cylindrical surface, and this block lies along the flat surface of the housing opening to prevent the outer race from turning in the housing opening. A sensor module (B) is located within the environs of the bearing, and it contains a plurality of sensors (110, 112, 114) which produce signals that reflect conditions under which the bearing operates. Among the conditions monitored are speed, temperature and vibrations.

  • Patent number: 6126321
Abstract: A bearing assembly for mounting on a journal at the end of a shaft employs a seal wear ring disposed between the backing ring and the end face of the axially inwardly directed bearing cone, with the outer cylindrical surface of the seal wear ring cooperating with a resilient sealing element for sealing the bearing. The inner diameter of the seal wear ring is greater than the diameter of the shaft journal to provide a clearance there between along the full length of the wear ring. Counterbores are provided in an outwardly directed surface of the backing ring and in the axially inwardly directed end face of the bearing cone, with the counterbores in the backing ring and bearing cone being dimensioned to provide an interference fit sufficient to provide a substantial radially compressive load in the ends of the seal wear ring upon assembly of the bearing.

  • Patent number: 5462367
Abstract: A compact antifriction bearing fits around a journal at the end of an axle for a rail car. The journal extends from an intervening section of the axle, and the intervening section in turn projects from a still larger main section, there being fillets where the sections merge. A backing ring fits against the fillet at the end of the journal, while an end cap fits over the opposite end of the journal. The bearing includes two cones which are clamped between the end cap and backing ring, a double cup surrounding the cones, and tapered rollers arranged in two rows between raceways on the cones and on the cup. The ends of the bearing are closed by seals which are fitted to the cup and cone. The thicker intervening section of the axle is extended in comparison to its counterparts on traditional axles, and the backing ring extends axially along the journal generally no further than the location at which the fillet emerges from the main body of the journal.
