The rotation of each trunnion in its bearing tending to generate heat which tends to raise the temperature of the trunnions and frame above the ambient temperature. The apparatus includes a cooling system, having a coolant supply manifold and a coolant return manifold, each with a branch for each bearing, and a pump for circulating coolant through each bearing. The cooling system also includes a device for controlling the temperature of the coolant.

  • Patent number: 4884903
Abstract: An inter-shaft bearing in a multiple body turbo-engine having an outer first shaft and an inner second shaft comprises bearing rollers disposed between an outer ring mounted on the first shaft and an inner ring mounted on the second shaft. The first shaft and the outer ring are provided with cooperating conical surfaces, and a plurality of fly-weights are disposed between the rear face of the outer ring and a retaining nut mounted on the first shaft. Each of the fly-weights has an inclined rear face which cooperates with a conical surface of the nut so that when centrifugal action during operation of the engine causes the fly-weights to move radially outwards they are simultaneously forced axially forwards to exert a thrust on the outer ring which thus tends to restrain the bearing through the action of the cooperating conical surfaces of the outer ring and the first shaft, thereby controlling bearing play.

  • Patent number: 4596476
Abstract: The thrust bearing for the shaft of a boiler feed pump in a nuclear reactor plant is cooled by a first stream of lubricant which is drawn from a sump by an impeller receiving motion from the shaft. The first stream constitutes one branch of a larger second stream which flows from the discharge end of the impeller. A third stream constituting another branch of the second stream is sprayed against and is cooled by the housing of the feed pump. The first and third streams are caused to reenter the sump by gravity flow. The exterior of the housing is provided with heat dissipating ribs.

  • Patent number: 4500143
Abstract: A clearance control device in an inter-shaft turbojet engine bearing journal placed between a high pressure trunnion and a low pressure trunnion and including inserted between an inner ring and an outer ring, the high pressure trunnion including a series of longitudinal grooves and a series of longitudinal holes which are supplied with oil from an intake and an annular collector in the low pressure trunnion, from which the oil moves by centrifugation through radial holes into an annular recess in the downstream tightening nut of the outer ring, which in turn communicates with the grooves through holes formed in the nut. Clearance in the bearing journal is controlled by cooling the high pressure trunnion at the maximum operating speeds of the turbine via circulating oil. By virtue of an appropriate circuit, the oil supplied by the collector lubricates the bearing and cools the roller bearing journal.
