Abstract: A bearing assembly includes a split inner race having first and second inner race halves joined together at a split line. A plurality of center feed passages are provided at the split line, and at least one radial pilot passage is provided in one of the inner race halves and axially spaced from the center feed passages. A bifurcated distribution manifold is disposed at the split line and includes a center distribution manifold disposed in flow communication with the center feed passages, and a pilot distribution manifold disposed in flow communication with solely the pilot passage. The bifurcated distribution manifold ensures the independent channeling of lubricating oil to both the center feed passages and the pilot passage under centrifugal force upon rotation of the inner race.

Abstract: An anti-friction bearing unit, particularly for use in an exhaust gas turbo charger. The unit includes two anti-friction bearings axially spaced apart from each other on a shaft. High temperature occurs on one end of the shaft. A precise mounting is provided which is not sensitive to high temperatures on at least the axial side exposed to high temperature. The bearing outer ring, which is the ring not subject to high temperatures, consists of one piece. The bearing inner ring is widened and divided into two sections at its axial middle. The axial portion of the divided inner ring which is exposed to high temperature consists of material of high heat resistance. The high heat resistance material is, for example, 80 MoCrV 42 16 (M 50) or X 102 CRMo 17 (AISI 440 C). An additional intermediate ring around the shaft at the high temperature and helps reduce heat transmission.

  • Patent number: 4986607
Abstract: A wheel mount for driven wheels including an axially inner hub and an axially outward outer part. A first row of rolling elements rolling about the periphery of the hub and a second row of rolling elements rolling about the periphery of a pivot journal projecting from the outward part into the bore of the hub. In the bore of the hub is a circumferential array of axially extending, obliquely radially outwardly inclined teeth. A fastening journal from the outward part projects into the bore axially past the oblique teeth. The fastening journal is plastically deformable to define a deformed bead which engages in the toothing in the bore of the hub to provide a rotation lock between the hub and the outward part. The bore of the hub and the periphery of the fastening journal also are stepped complementary for axially fixing them in form locked manner.

  • Patent number: 4943171
Abstract: A wheel bearing unit for motor vehicles, and the like, having an outer ring and two rows of anti-friction rolling elements in the outer ring. An axially inward hub has one race for one row of rolling elements. An axially outer part of the of the bearing unit has another row of rolling elements on its periphery. One of the hub or the outer part has an axially projecting pin projecting toward the other. The other of the outer part and the hub has a sleeve with an internal bore into which the pin projects. The periphery of the pin and the interior of the bore are stepped complementary to one another such that when the hub and outer part are brought together, they are stabilized thereby. An axially directed projection projects from the axially forward end of the pin into engagement with the bottom of the bore. When the outer part and hub are relatively rotated, the contact is sufficiently heated to friction weld the end of the axially directed projection to the bottom of the bore.

The inner ring 3 is first produced in one part and after having been machined to its finish-dimensions it is broken into two ring parts 4, 5 by applying pressure. The joint 10 extends relative to the axis of rotation x--x of the bearing at an angle which deviates from a right angle. • Patent number: 4797014
Abstract: A high-spped anti-friction bearing particularly useful for airplane power plants, the bearing having an outer ring and an inner ring. The inner ring is axially split at the rolling elements into two axial sections. The axial sections are each generally L-shaped in cross section, with one arm of each L backed against the other. To enable the bearing rings to be relatively thin walled in the radial direction and to prevent undesirable deformation thereof during the manufacture or installation, each of the rings is provided on at least one axial side and preferably on both axial sides with projecting axial extensions. Each extension preferably tapers narrower in its radial thickness axially outward. Each extension includes a cylindrical portion and a frustoconically shaped portion, usually with the cylindrical portion axially more inward and the frustoconical portion axially more outward.

  • Patent number: 4764153
Abstract: A wheel bearing assembly, wherein a wheel bearing including an inner bearing ring and an outer bearing ring is arranged in driving connection with a universal joint, is formed with the inner bearing ring consisting of a piece which has been initially formed as a unitary member with dimensions so as to be ready for installation in the bearing assembly, with the unitary member being subsequently ruptured to form a split therein by application of pressure, thereby to form the inner bearing ring in two parts. The wheel bearing consists of a dual-row ball bearing and the inner bearing ring is formed with two races, with the split extending between the two races. A recess is formed between the two parts of the inner bearing within which there engages part of the universal joint to effect torque transmitting engagement between the joint and the wheel assembly, with the two parts of the inner bearing ring being clamped together within an assembled state, with the split therebetween extending through the recess.
