The second tapered adapter has an outer, annular tapered surface tapered at a taper angle opposite to that of the first tapered adapter such that the first and second tapered adapters co-operate to define an outer annular surface having a generally V-shaped configuration that tapers from spaced greater diameter outer ends to adjacent lesser diameter inner ends. The opposed tapered surfaces have a fixed limit in their axial travel toward each other along the shaft defined by engagement of the lesser diameter inner ends. When the tapered surfaces reach the end of their travel, the bearing supported on the tapered surfaces is tightened on the shaft with the correct clearances.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2004Date of Patent: March 18, 2008Assignee: QM Holdings Ltd.Inventors: Kurt Lee Hansen, Donald Grimmond Yorston, Roger David Crowle

Publication number: 20080056634Abstract: A mounting system is disclosed for mounting a bearing assembly or other mechanical element to a shaft. The mounting system uses a tapered sleeve mechanism to secure the bearing assembly on the shaft. Specifically, a plurality of screws point load the tapered sleeve and drive it from a pre-assembled position to an initial position. Once the initial position has been reached a plurality of fasteners then drive the sleeve from the initial position to a final position. The difference between the initial position and final position determined by the width of a removable spacer used in the mounting system. The system also incorporates a jack screw mechanism used to dismount the bearing assembly from the shaft.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 5, 2006Publication date: March 6, 2008Inventors: William Gregory Hewitt, Joseph J. Patent number: 7186030Abstract: An expandable shaft assembly including an axially extending shaft with an axial axis, an extending shaft with an axial axis, an external dimension, at least one shaft end and a bore extending generally axially from the at least one shaft end. The shaft assembly also includes a second element, as an axle cap, with an axially extending, externally threaded portion with a first thread flank, a shoulder portion extending in a generally radially outwardly direction. A radially extending end face is also provided that is axially constrained relative to the shaft, wherein the radially extending end face is one of (1) integral with the shaft, and (2) on a separate element. The bore of the shaft includes an axially extending, internally threaded portion with a second thread flank, wherein at least one of the first and second thread flanks are inclined.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2004Date of Patent: March 6, 2007Inventor: Raphael Schlanger

Patent number: 7037026Abstract: A method for mounting an axially split sleeve provided with an axial slot on a shaft so that a tapering surface on the sleeve cooperates with a tapering bore of a machine member. A flange is axially connected to the sleeve and supports a number of spaced apart tightening devices that are to be urged against the machine member for mutually displacing the machine member and the sleeve to increase the grip between the shaft, the sleeve and the machine member. The method involves positioning the sleeve around the shaft with the annular flange positioned with its tightening devices against the machine member, tightening a first one of the tightening devices which is located at a position diametrically opposite the slot in the sleeve, and thereafter tightening further ones of the tightening devices one by one.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2002Date of Patent: May 2, 2006Assignee: AB SKFInventors: Sture Östling, Uno Axelsson

Patent number: 6939053Abstract: A system is provided for securing a rotating member with respect to a non-rotating member. A hollow member, such as an inner ring of a bearing assembly, includes an extension having an annular outer groove. A tapered sleeve serves to lock the hollow member about a mechanical component, such as a shaft. A nut engageable on the sleeve includes an eccentric front aperture adjacent to a concentric groove, thereby forming a lip of varying depth. The system is engaged by rotation of the nut on the sleeve in one direction, and disassembled by counterrotation of the nut such that a portion of the varying depth lip co-acts with a lip formed by the groove of the hollow member.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2001Date of Patent: September 6, 2005Assignee: Reliance Electric Technologies, LLCInventors: Donald L. Patent number: 6893160Abstract: A wedge-type bearing assembly that is easily dismounted from a shaft includes an adapter sleeve, an inner ring, and a lock nut. The split cylindrical adapter sleeve wraps around a shaft, and has a radially outwardly facing surface including a tapered section. The threaded inner ring encircles the adapter sleeve, and includes a radially inwardly facing surface engaging the tapered section of the adapter sleeve. The lock nut is fixed axially relative to said the sleeve and threadably engages the inner ring, wherein rotation of the lock nut in one direction of rotation draws the inner ring over the adapter sleeve to fix the inner bearing ring relative to the shaft, and rotation of the lock nut in a second direction urges the inner ring off of the adapter sleeve to release the inner bearing ring relative to the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2003Date of Patent: May 17, 2005Assignee: Rexnord Industries, Inc.Inventor: Marlon R. Patent number: 6883818Abstract: A bicycle headset assembly is mounted to a steering tube extending through a head tube of the bicycle. The headset assembly includes a race connected to a top end of the bicycle head tube and a bearing set is engaged with an inner periphery of the race. A positioning ring is engaged with an inner periphery of the bearing set and mounted on the steering tube. A cap is mounted to the race and presses the positioning ring. A pressing ring is mount to the steering tube and presses on a top surface of the cap by the handlebar stem.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2003Date of Patent: April 26, 2005Inventor: Douglas Chiang

Patent number: 6857784Abstract: A system and method is provided for setting the roller clearance of a multi-row tapered roller bearing assembly via a clearance adjustment assembly and an outer retaining sleeve. The bearing assembly has multiple rows of tapered rollers disposed circumferentially between an inner sleeve and the clearance adjustment assembly, which is secured by the outer retaining sleeve. The clearance adjustment assembly has at least one clearance adjustment ring disposed adjacent multiple tapered support rings, which extend circumferentially about the multiple rows of tapered rollers. In the bearing assembly, the at least one clearance adjustment ring forces the multiple tapered support rings against the multiple rows of tapered rollers to set the desired roller clearance.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2002Date of Patent: February 22, 2005Assignee: Reliance Electric Technologies, LLC.Inventors: Ryan N.
