Bearings are pressed into the insert of the present invention, with the insert being threaded into the bearing housing of the machine component. Tools for the installation and removal of the insert to and from the threaded bearing housing and for supporting the insert as bearings are pressed from or into the insert, are also provided. The present bearing insert is particularly valuable in relatively complex installations such as steering and suspension knuckles in front wheel drive automobiles, which would conventionally require hours of work for removal of the knuckle for bearing removal and replacement. The present invention allows the knuckle or other machine component to remain on the machine, thus greatly reducing the time required for bearing service.

  • Patent number: 6926448
Abstract: An inner race 5 is retained by a crimped portion 30, so that a pre-load is applied to rolling elements 6. A bearing unit for wheel support 1 is connected to a constant velocity joint 2 through tightening of a nut 24. By regulating the tightening force of the nut 24, at the area of contact between the inside end of the crimped portion 30 and the outside end of the outer ring of the constant velocity joint 14, the load per unit length is controlled up to 125 N/mm, or the surface pressure is controlled up to 1.5×108 Pa. Consequently, a bearing unit for wheel support is realized at a low cost with the pre-load securely applied, preventing unpleasant noise from occurring during operation, and preventing play due to plastic deformation.

  • Patent number: 6925715
Abstract: Methods in accordance with the present invention can eliminate cumbersome and potentially contaminating methods for connecting a bearing assembly with an actuator assembly. One such assembly comprises a bearing assembly with a threaded base for insertion into a bore, wherein the bore includes threads for engaging the threaded base of the bearing assembly, eliminating the contamination associated with such methods as glueing. The bearing assembly is designed such that it can be disconnected from the actuator assembly for rework without damaging or contaminating the actuator assembly or bearing assembly. This description is not intended to be a complete description of, or limit the scope of, the invention. Other features, aspects, and objects of the invention can be obtained from a review of the specification, the figures, and the claims.

  • Patent number: 6893160
Abstract: A wedge-type bearing assembly that is easily dismounted from a shaft includes an adapter sleeve, an inner ring, and a lock nut. The split cylindrical adapter sleeve wraps around a shaft, and has a radially outwardly facing surface including a tapered section. The threaded inner ring encircles the adapter sleeve, and includes a radially inwardly facing surface engaging the tapered section of the adapter sleeve. The lock nut is fixed axially relative to said the sleeve and threadably engages the inner ring, wherein rotation of the lock nut in one direction of rotation draws the inner ring over the adapter sleeve to fix the inner bearing ring relative to the shaft, and rotation of the lock nut in a second direction urges the inner ring off of the adapter sleeve to release the inner bearing ring relative to the shaft.

  • Patent number: 6769809
Abstract: The bearing is an angular contact ball bearing with two asymmetric rows of balls, with a one-piece outer race and an inner race having two matched inner half-races side by side and able to be axially preloaded against each other when the bearing is mounted on the shaft of a gear the set of teeth of which cantilevers out from the bearing which has its row of larger-diameter balls on the same side as the set of teeth. Preloading may be provided by a nut screwed onto the shaft and tightened up against one of the inner half-races until the latter bears against the other inner half-race. A lock nut may hold the nut in position. The gear with its set of teeth and its shaft, the bearing with its large-diameter balls on the same side as the set of teeth, and the preloading device constitute a modular assembly, premounted and preloaded prior to fixing to a housing using a flange belonging to the outer race.

  • Patent number: 6425690
Abstract: A bearing subassembly includes an improved arrangement for securing the bearing subassembly to a shaft. An adjusting nut is axially locked to a bearing inner ring by sliding the adjusting nut over the inner ring so that a groove in the adjusting nut and recesses, for example, pockets, on the inner ring align. Securement elements, for example, balls, are inserted into the groove and seated in the recesses through a bore from the outer diameter of the adjusting nut to the groove. The inner ring is rotated to allow the securement elements to fall into the recesses and are enclosed between the groove and recesses by inserting, for example, a set screw after the securement elements are loaded. The securement arrangement then prevents the bearing subassembly adjusting nut and inner ring from separating.
