  • Patent number: 8104972
Abstract: A number of machines such as gas turbine engines have asymmetric axial loading along a shaft (2, 3, 4). In order to accommodate for this asymmetric loading, known as an end bearing load, a load share bearing (103) is typically provided. However, specifying the fixed bearing (11, 12) becomes increasingly difficult as space and weight considerations are taken into account. In such circumstances providing a combination of a fixed bearing (11, 12) and a load share bearing (103) to achieve an acceptable bearing end load capacity is more acceptable. The proportion of the combination provided respectively by the fixed bearing and the load share bearing can be varied dependent upon operational stage in order to achieve more efficient operation.

Abstract: A rolling bearing apparatus includes inner and outer rings in which a preload applying unit applies a preload to the outer ring. If a fluid pressure in a fluid supply passage is higher than a first set pressure, then fluid is supplied to a pressure chamber via a check valve, and if a pressure becomes lower than the first set pressure, then fluid is supplied from a hydraulic pump to the pressure chamber via the check valve. If the pressure becomes higher than a second set pressure, then the fluid is discharged from the pressure chamber via a relief valve, and if the pressure within the pressure chamber becomes higher than a third set pressure, which is higher than the first set pressure but is lower than the second set pressure, then the supply of fluid is stopped. Abstract: A mill roll is supported at its roll necks on tapered roller bearings, each having several cones and corresponding cups and rows of tapered rollers between the raceways of each cone and cup. Each bearing also has rib rings located at the ends of its cups to provide surfaces against which the large diameter ends of the rollers in its several sets bear. The cups and rib rings are clamped together within a chock, and they, in turn, capture the several rows of rollers. The cone raceways taper downwardly away from the roll body and lie within a single conical envelope having its center along the axis of rotation for the bearing. This arrangement allows the chock, which carries the cups, rib rings and rollers, to be passed over the cones on the roll neck. The roll body is ground while the roll is supported on the bearings that are within the chocks and with the bearings in a condition of preload. This eliminates practically all eccentricity, so runout is maintained at a minimum.

The abutment forces which act at the bearings are produced by one or several pneumatic cylinders whose pressure spaces are preferably in connection with a gas space of the compressor. As the magnitude of the charging pressure of the compressor is dependent on the rotational speed, the abutment forces are also variable with the rotational speed. The piston surfaces of the pressure cylinders are so matched that at low rotational speeds as low as possible a bearing friction loss results whereas the abutment forces are still sufficiently high to assure a damage-free bearing operation.

  • Patent number: 4650364
Abstract: An arrangement for fastening a roll ring (5) to an overhung roll shaft (1) by means of a taper sleeve (8) which transmits essentially the entire torque and which is loaded axially by a spring (43) supported on an abutment (47) adjustable on the free end of the roll shaft. The roll ring can be exchanged easily because of a cylinder part (21) arranged radially within the spring. This cylinder part forms a first annular cylinder space (40) for prestressing the spring, with which it interacts via a flange, and a second cylinder space (22) for drawing off the taper sleeve, to which it is connected via engagement means (28). The spring and the hydraulic devices can remain in place when a roll ring is assembled and removed, because their outside diameter is less than the bore of the roll ring.

  • Patent number: 4611934
Abstract: A spindle is rotatably mounted within a housing on spaced-apart antifriction bearings. The inner races of the bearings are held solidly against shoulder portions of the spindle and the outer race of the front bearing is mounted against a shoulder in the housing. The outer race of the rear bearing is supported in a circular diaphragm concentric with the spindle axis, which may be flexed along the axis to load the bearings against one another. A hydraulic chamber is formed against the diaphragm to load the diaphragm at preselected intervals, and a stop plate is provided in the housing to limit movement of the outer race is a distance corresponding to a maximum preload in the bearings. When the stop plate is contacted, hydraulic pressure may be greatly increased to further load the diaphragm and its corresponding outer race solidly against the stop plate without further increasing the preload in the bearing set, providing a high holding force resistant to spindle pull out.

  • Patent number: 4611351
Abstract: This specification discloses a bearing mounting device in which while the hydraulic pressure in a hydraulic mechanism for applying a preload to a bearing is being adjusted in a state in which the fixing sleeve of a fixing mechanism for fixing the bearing to a shaft has been expanded by hydraulic pressure, a predetermined preload is applied to the bearing through a spacer provided between the fixing mechanism and the hydraulic mechanism and through the fixing mechansim. The hydraulic pressure in the fixing mechanism is released with the predetermined preload being applied and the fixing sleeve is fixed to the shaft, whereby the bearing is fixed in its appropriately preloaded state.

  • Patent number: 4571129
Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for an air bearing support of a rotatable tooling bar, such as a boring bar. One or two mandrels may be provided for this tooling bar to form a complete mandrel assembly with the tooling bar. An air pressure expansible collet is provided on each mandrel so that each may be clamped within a clamping aperture, such as an aperture on the workpiece itself. Air under pressure is supplied to the two mandrels simultaneously to accomplish, first, an air bearing centering of each mandrel around the tooling bar as a guide; second, an expansion of the collet on each mandrel for clamping of each mandrel within the clamping apertures; and, third, provision of an air bearing support and centering of the tooling bar within the two mandrels during machining for precise machining of the workpiece by the continued air supply.

  • Patent number: 4551032
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for mounting a rotatable member such as a machine tool spindle within a bore provided in a housing, the rotatable member being journaled in a number of bearings. A bearing support sleeve disposed within the bore to support the bearings includes a first portion tightly fitted in the bore, a second portion slip-fitted in the bore and positioned to apply a pre-load force to the bearings, and a yieldable member joining the first and second portions. The pressure in a fluid system associated with the yieldable member is increased to deform the yieldable member and to thereby urge the second portion axially to apply a pre-load force to the bearings which corresponds to the pressure increase.
