Patent number: 4972764Abstract: In a combination of sliding members which are suitable for use in the compressor for an automotive air conditioner, one of the members consists of an aluminum alloy which contains silicone particles consisting solely of eutectic silicon; and the other sliding member consists of a fluoride resin which contains carbon fibers and a calcium compound. The surface of the aluminum alloy can be finished to a desired smoothness as it does not contain any excessively hard substance. Also, since a calcium compound which is intermediate between carbon fibers and teflon resin in hardness is distributed in the teflon resin, the tendency of the carbon fibers to attack the aluminum alloy is reduced, and the aluminum alloy can achieve a sufficient wear resistance even though it does not contain any primary crystal silicon particles having a high hardness. Furthermore, the calcium compound serves as a lubricant, and reduces friction between the two sliding members.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1989Date of Patent: November 27, 1990Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Tadashi Ohya, Atsushi Takai

Patent number: 4955244Abstract: An operating apparatus includes a ball screw apparatus having a nut secured to a table which is fixed on sliders of a linear guide apparatus. The nut is engaged with a screw shaft and, when the screw shaft is rotated by a driving motor, the table having a member to be driven fixedly mounted thereon is moved together with the nut linearly and horizontally along the screw shaft. The ball screw apparatus and the linear guide apparatus is placed on a clean room, and a dust suction pump located outside the clean room sucks the dust produced in the clean room. Furthermore, a suction pipe of the dust suction pump is connected to a feed oil bore of the nut, which bore has been formed normally beforehand as a feed oil nipple. Thus, the dust produced in the inside of the nut is also sucked out by the dust suction pump. The suction pipe has a spiral portion near the nut.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 1989Date of Patent: September 11, 1990Assignee: Nippon Seiko Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Masayuki Katahira

Patent number: 4935388Abstract: The reliability of silicon nitride bodies for use in bearings can be greatly improved by control of microstructural flaws which produce bright specular reflections when metallographically prepared surfaces of the composites are examined microscopically in low angle incident light, dark field reflected light, or reflected polarized light viewed through a crossed polarizing analyzer. The population of such flaws can be controlled by modestly increasing the normal amount of intergranular phase and longer than normal milling times before sintering. Size classification of the powder before compression also improves the performance of the body. The fatigue cycles to failure of ten percent of the silicon nitride surfaces tested at 6.9 GPa contact stress in accelerated bearing failure ASTM Test STP 771 (L.sub.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1985Date of Patent: June 19, 1990Assignee: Norton CompanyInventor: John W. Patent number: 4759644Abstract: The invention relates to a journal gas bearing body which is formed with a cylindrical bore to rotatably support therein the journal part of a shaft and gas introducing holes radially opening into the cylindrical bore. The bearing body is made of a metal, and only in opposite endmost sections of the cylindrical bore the cylindrical inner surface defining the bore is provided by a very hard and wear resistant material, which is either a ceramic or a cemented carbide. It is convenient to provide the hard inner surface in each of said endmost sections by insertion of a hollow cylindrical bushing formed of a ceramic or a cemented carbide. The gas introducing holes are all located lengthwise inward of said endmost sections to avoid boring through the ceramic or cemented carbide layer. Accordingly the bearing body can easily be manufactured without significant increase in the working cost.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1987Date of Patent: July 26, 1988Assignee: NGK Spark Plug Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hisayosi Mizukusa, Sigenori Murate

Patent number: 4754494Abstract: A gas bearing and bearing surfaces capable of operating in an unlubricated configuration and providing reliable wear-resistant, start/stop cycling. The bearing typically comprises opposed surfaces of the same or different materials. A first surface is typically formed by ion implantation of boron into a beryllium metal bearing structure. The boron is typically implanted at a predetermined depth into the beryllium surface to provide a substantially pure beryllium surface. The second surface is typically PYROCERAM, a ceramic metal composite, such as a titanium diboride beryllium structure or a surface having titanium diboride and beryllium applied to a beryllium metal bearing structure by hot isostatic pressing facing. The second surface is adapted to run against the first, or against itself in the ceramic or ceramic surface case. The bearing configuration is capable of running reliably and with acceptably low wear through many start/stop cycles without the application of any lubricant.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1985Date of Patent: June 28, 1988Assignee: The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Inc.Inventor: Kaplesh Kumar
