Abstract: A duplex scanning apparatus includes a sheet feeding tray, a sheet pick-up roller and a sheet separation roller. The sheet feeding tray includes a first opening and a second opening. The sheet pick-up roller and the sheet separation roller are partially received in the first opening and the second opening of the sheet feeding tray, respectively, so that the sheet pick-up roller and the sheet separation roller are sustained against documents on the sheet feeding tray. For performing duplex scanning operations on the stack of paper sheets, the documents are successively scanned from the bottommost paper sheet to the uppermost paper sheet. As a consequence, the scanned documents are stacked in the discharging tray in the same order as that of the original stack.

Abstract: Original sheets in which both-side image information and one-side image information exist mixedly can be efficiently and certainly transmitted without an erroneous operation. A CPU discriminates the presence or absence of effective image information in images on both sides of the original sheets read by a reading circuit. In a both-side transmitting mode, the CPU selectively determines whether a both-side transmitting procedure is used or a one-side transmitting procedure is used, for transmission of the image information for each transmission of one original sheet, in accordance with a result of the discrimination. In the both-side transmitting procedure, control information such as page number, information regarding the front or reverse side of the original sheet, and the like is transmitted to a receiver station, for each side of the original sheet.

Abstract: A device for use with a copier to make copies of both sides of a document or other objects in a single pass. The device is configured to rest on a copier platen without being attached to the platen and without deriving power from the copier. A document holder in the form of a pair of plates joined by a hinged connection is opened for insertion of a document to be copied. The holder is pivotally attached to a base member and spring-biased to rotate from a first to a second position above the copier platen. As a copier scanner moves beneath the holder temporarily latched in its first position, a first side of the document is scanned. A sensor then causes automatic release of the holder permitting it to swing to its second position for scanning its second side as the holder moves to its second position.

Abstract: An image scanning machine includes a document feeder for feeding sheets into a first paper path from a stack one sheet at a time if a one-side scanning mode is selected. If a both-side scanning mode is selected, a sheet is introduced into a second paper path which is an inverting path that turns a sheet, which is fed from the document feeder, upside down prior to scanning. Rollers located at a downstream end of the inverting path reverse a transportation direction of the sheet and feed the sheet to a scanner through a return path. The transportation direction of the sheet is reversed after the scanner scans one side of the sheet, and the sheet is then fed to the scanner again to scan the other side of the sheet. This transportation direction reversal results in turning the sheet upside down. A guide member is located a bifurcation of the return path and the inverting path for opening one of the return and inverting paths and closing the other of the return and inverting paths.

Abstract: An image processing device comprising a second side image sensor to determine whether the second side of a document also requires processing. The second side image sensor preferably uses a camera or measures reflected infrared light with an infrared photosensor. The invention relates to a wide variety of image processing devices such as copy machines, facsimile machines, annotators, scanners, printers, etc., which process documents. When the system detects an image or markings on the second side of a document it may merely alert the user or automatically process the second side of the document without additional user interaction.

The transport roller may comprise one or more coaxial rollers in an assembly positioned in the media path and is rotatable in different directions such that the leading edge of a moving media sheet is moved through one or the other of two nips defined between the transport roller assembly and associated upper and lower pinch rollers. The direction of rotation of the transport roller assembly can be reversed before the sheet leaves the nip to thus re-position the sheet guide gate and re-route the sheet back in a desired path to a scanner or printer for further sheet processing.

A first document conveying path extends from a document stand to a contact glass and a second document conveying path extends from the contact glass to a document discharging tray via a fixed reading-out section. The direction of conveying the document is changed over by a changing-over claw. Thus, the image data on the front and rear sides of both surfaces of the document can be read out without being overlapped.
