  • Patent number: 5876143
Abstract: A document binder is formed with front and back covers hinged together in articulated fashion with a spine located therebetween. An overlay is provided across the outer surface of at least the front cover and the spine and is secured by fusion to inner and outer, plastic cover sheets that encapsulate a flat, stiff, front cover core, spine, and back cover core therebetween. A front cover title sheet pocket is defined between the overlay and the outer, plastic cover sheet. The title sheet pocket is of a narrow enough width to readily accommodate title sheets printed on paper of standard width, such as eight and a half inches. The fabrication technique employed allows a title sheet pocket to be created for the front cover of the document binder which snugly confines the title sheet and prevents it from shifting laterally as occurs in conventional devices.

Abstract: A binder (12) for storing sheets (S) of paper having punched holes (H). First and second end leafs (16, 18) form outer covers of the binder. A center plate (20) is positioned intermediate the end leafs which are flexibly attached (at 16f, 18f) to the center plate to enclose sheets of paper between the end leafs. Binder rings (24, 26, 28) carrier on the center plate hold the sheets and are movable from a closed to an open position. Sheets are inserted into the binder by inserting the holes over an exposed end (24e, 26e, 28e) of the rings when the rings are opened. Locking mechanism (30) locks the rings closed. A mechanism (58) moves the rings from their closed to their open position. One end (24d, 26d, 28d) of the rings attach to a rotatable plate (60). • Patent number: 5634666
Abstract: A binder with cover spacer which restrains the covers of a binder in a near-parallel relationship to enable the binder to be stored in a stacked or shelved manner. The binder of the invention is comprised of a back portion, or spine, which determines the width of the closed binder, and generally two covers hingedly attached to the spine. The cover spacer of the invention comprises a first base portion affixed to one of the covers of the binder near the distal, or outer, edge of the cover. A stand-off element is hingedly attached to the first base portion, such that the stand-off element is moveable from a position approximately parallel to the cover, essentially laying flat against the cover, to a position approximately perpendicular to the cover. A second base portion is affixed to the other cover in a position generally opposite to the first base portion.

Abstract: A binder apparatus including a replaceable outer cover. The outer cover is formed of a completely recyclable material such as paperboard to allow it to be recycled after it has been removed from the ring binder mechanism. The spine of the outer cover is releasably connected to a ring binder mechanism having hinged rings for holding papers and the like by a removable rivet assembly inserted through corresponding apertures in the spine and the ring binder mechanism. The removable rivet assembly includes a sleeve having a plurality of arms, and a pin having a shaft and a head. The shaft of the pin is inserted into the sleeve and holds the arms on the sleeve outward against the ring binder mechanism, thus securing the spine of the outer cover to the ring binder mechanism. The rivet assembly is inserted into the corresponding apertures in the spine and ring binder mechanism such that, when the rivet assembly is in place, the head of the pin contacts the spine of the outer cover.

  • Patent number: 5620207
Abstract: A ring binder cover (4) is composed of a pair of themoplastic sheets (20, 22) superimposed in edge-to-edge relation with a stiffener insert panel (23) disposed therebetween. The insert panel bears two parallel grooves (25, 27) which divide the insert into a spine zone (30) and two cover zones (24, 26). The material of the insert lying at the bottom of the grooves forms a pair of flexible strips (32, 34) which, combined with the adjacent portions of the cover sheets, form hinges between the spine and each cover. The peripheral edge portions (40) of the two thermoplastic sheets are sealed together and provide a sealed envelope for the stiffener insert which defines semi-rigid back and front cover panels of the binder, hingedly connected to a rigid spine. The insert can be provided with insert notches (370, 470, 570) at each end of each flexible strip to reduce outward protuberance of the peripheral edge at the hinge ends.
