  • Patent number: 5782576
Abstract: A connection of rotationally symmetrical components, in which minimal overturning torques and consequently minimal deformations of the supporting components are generated by generating the smallest, theoretically possible lever arm, on which the forces of the connection to be transmitted act. As a result, a nonpositive and positive-locking connection is obtained, in which the bolts no longer represent the dominantly loaded component. The maintenance and testing of the bolts is considerably reduced in all connections. Optimal flux of forces through the components close to the line of force application is achieved in the case of the tensioning of large rolling bearings. The requirements in terms of concentration of the contact pressure of the bearing tensioning in the vicinity of the line of force application are satisfied. In the case of a flange connection, optimal conditions are provided for tightness, besides a more economical manufacture, compared with the prior-art designs.

  • Patent number: 5687537
Abstract: An improved modular antenna pole comprised of a series of aligned cylindrical sections of progressively smaller diameters. Each of the sections includes a top and bottom transverse surface and a circular flange attached to the top and bottom transverse surfaces, respectively, to permit adjacent sections to be bolted together using conventional attachment bolts through a series of complementally spaced mating bores through the flanges. Each of the bolts is held in place by a retention clip which allows the bolts to be pre-installed. A stop tab located inside the sections prevents the bolts from rotating during tightening, and eliminates the use of a conventional jam nut. This improved design also allows the bottom flange of a higher section to rest directly on the top flange of a lower section, resulting in easier assembly and a straighter and more stable pole.

  • Patent number: 5263997
Abstract: A plate for spreading bolt loading around the horizontal joint flanges of a turbomachine, such as a steam turbine, is provided. The plate is contoured so that its surface area substantially matches that of the surface of the steam turbine flange against which the compressive load associated with the joint bolt preloading is applied. The plate is disposed between the flange and the nuts on the joint bolts and is made from a high yield strength material so that the locally high stresses under the nuts do not cause creeping or yielding of the plate. The plate serves to distribute the compressive joint loading around the entire surface of the flange, thereby eliminating the locally high compressive stresses that can cause creep and yielding in the flange. Spherical counter bores are machined in the plate bolt holes and spherical washers are installed between the plate and the nuts so that misalignment of bolt holes does not cause the nuts to impose bending forces on the bolts.

Abstract: An adaptor (25) is disclosed for use in mounting a transmission clutch housing (21) to a flywheel housing (11') wherein the flywheel housing defines a first bolt circle pattern (R1), and the clutch housing defines a second, substantially smaller bolt circle pattern (R2). The adaptor includes a first portion (27) and a second portion (29), the portions defining pluralities of bolt holes (37 and 43). The first portion defines a forward surface (33) and the second portion defines a rearward surface (41), both surfaces coinciding with an imaginary transverse mounting plane MP. The forward surface of the first portion engages a mounting surface (62) of the flywheel housing, while the rearward surface of the second portion engages a forward surface (54) of the clutch housing, such that the use of the adaptor (25) does not change the relative axial position of the flywheel housing and clutch housing, which would require a change in the configuration or length of the transmission input shaft (19).

  • Patent number: 5167464
Abstract: A robot-friendly coupling device for an Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU). The invention will provide a coupling that is detached and attached remotely by a robot. The design of the coupling must allow for slight misalignments, over torque protection, and precision placement. This is accomplished by using of a triangular interface having three components. A base plate assembly is located on an attachment surface, such as a satellite. The base plate assembly has a cup member, a slotted member, and a post member. The ORU that the robot attaches to the base plate assembly has an ORU plate assembly with two cone members and a post member which mate to the base plate assembly. As the two plates approach one another, one cone member of the ORU plate assembly only has to be placed accurately enough to fall into the cup member of the base plate assembly. The cup forces alignment until a second cone falls into a slotted member which provides final alignment. A single bolt is used to attach the two plates.
