  • Patent number: 5067736
Abstract: An in-line roller skate and brake utilizes an improved braking assembly in which the brake pad is retained to the brake housing by an interacting tongue and slot system which causes the pad to be tightly forced into the housing during braking. The upper face of the pad is retained to the housing, and compression of the rubber pad forces a slot on the periphery of the pad tightly into locking engagement with the housing so as to provide a substantially improved retention system for the brake pad during heavy braking operation.

  • Patent number: 5054980
Abstract: A composite, friction weldable stud is used to affix a first plate to a second plate made of dissimilar materials. The stud has a first body made of material compatible with the first plate, with the body having a shank and a collar extending outwardly therefrom of a predetermined diameter. The collar has a first surface extending toward the shank with grooves to mate with cooperating ridges of a chuck of a friction-welding tool. The stud further includes a second body of material compatible with the second plate. The second body has a friction-weldable nose extending outwardly from the collar and substantially coaxial with an axis of the first body. The first and second bodies have cooperating threaded for affixing the two bodies together so that they can move as a unit. A hole is formed in the first plate which is larger than the nose but smaller than the collar. The nose is placed through the first hole into contact with the second plate.

  • Patent number: 5014983
Abstract: A portable game apparatus is a kit which includes a lower stake member and a set of upper stake members. The members have threaded portions which allow the members to be securely joined together end to end. One of the upper members is structured to allow the upper members and lower member (when joined together) to be pounded into the ground. The upper member is detached from the lower member while the lower member remains embedded in the ground to provide a foundation for the other upper members which are specifically structured to allow various game structures such as volleyball nets, basketball nets and backboards as well as tether balls and ropes to be secured thereto. Truncated cone portions on the members (at their joined portions) add structural rigidity to the members, and ridge and groove structures secure the members in a desired joined together position.

  • Patent number: 4708513
Abstract: An extended lift coupling for joining tubular members in an end-to-end relationship is disclosed. The coupling is of simple design having only three components: a pin, a box and a threaded lock ring. An external compressive axial preload places a torus on the pin in axial compression. Make-up of the lock ring maintains the compressive strain on the torus and the lock ring when the axial make-up force is removed. Thereafter, increased tensile loading on the pin and box is partially absorbed in benign compressive stress of the locking ring. By controlling the geometry of the coupling such that the stiffness of the torus is high compared to the stiffness of the box and the stiffness of the lock ring, the fatigue life of the coupling caused by applied cyclic tensile forces is enhanced.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method directed particularly to improving a modified threaded buttress collar. The method is also of value with any internally threaded member having a seal ring groove therein. The method specifically deals with the removal of the feather edge thread created when a seal ring groove is placed within an internally threaded member. Such groove usually provides residence for a seal ring. When the groove is placed in the internally threaded member there is created a feather edge thread immediately adjacent the groove. This feather edge thread is easily deformable and can create severe galling problems within the coupling. The feather edge is removed, preferably, in stepped fashion utilizing a machining tool such as a grooving tool within a computer numerically controlled lathe. The grooving tool is set such that as the coupling turns in the lathe, the movement of the grooving tool matches the pitch and helix of the threads and the speed of the lathe.

In practice, the positioner tool is secured to the reducer coupling and the coupling is moved into its hook-up position above the production casing, by attaching a rig to the positioner tool. The coupling can then be threaded into the casing by turning the positioner tool with a wrench, or similar tool.

  • Patent number: 4658915
Abstract: An easy break-out tool joint (10) (two embodiments) comprising a drive spindle (stem), or sub (12, 12a) having a shoulder ring (32, 32a) whose shoulder (34) is axially movable but rotatable with the sub (12, 12a) to form a conventionally shouldered (34, 58) drill pipe joint so that, upon rotation in one direction, torque is applied in the conventional manner for drilling or back reaming. The shoulder (34) is initially axially moved relative to the drive sub to disconnect the shoulder (34, 58) when the drive stem is rotated in the opposite, or break-out direction, thereby reducing the torque required for break-out to only that torque necessary to unthread the joint. In the practice of the method of triple back reaming utilizing this easy break-out tool joint, a drilling unit (140, 160) is lowered to the platform and the drive spindle or sub (12, 12a) is connected to the top drill pipe of the string, while the string is held by a spider (156) at the platform level.

  • Patent number: 4655630
Abstract: A device for attaching a tool to the end of a robot arm includes a collet having a truncated conical body with a radially outwardly extending flange formed at a larger end and a cylindrical holder having a tapered aperture for receiving the conical body of the collet. The collet has radially outwardly extending threads formed on the periphery of the flange to engage the threaded interior of a tubular collar. A radially inwardly extending flange on the collar engages a radially outwardly extending flange on the holder to retain the collet conical body in the tapered aperture thereby providing precise X-Y location. The flange on the collet is attached to a face place which is in turn attached to a tool, and an end of the holder is attached to a mounting flange which in turn is attached to an end of a robot arm. Means for preventing relative rotation between the collet and the holder includes a pair of longitudinally extending slots and cooperating key, or a pair of circular apertures and a cooperating pin.

Abstract: A hood bumper assembly which may be used, for example, to adjustably align the hood of an automobile with the adjacent fenders as the hood is brought down into locked engagement over the engine compartment. The assembly includes a workpiece, which may be the framework of the engine compartment, having an aperture and a helical internal marginal portion defined around the aperture, and a member having an end with a spherical surface portion arranged to engage the hood when closed and a shank portion including a helical thread adapted to be threadingly received by the aperture. The assembly further includes detent means carried by the shank and the workpiece for releasably locking the shank within the aperture against rotation at predetermined rotational intervals. The spherical surface portion of the member end is arranged to coact with a stamped recess in the underside of the hood to prevent lateral vibration of the hood and to positively locate the hood in proper position when it is closed.

Abstract: A tubular main bar, internally threaded, with buttress teeth, from each end, with a stop in the middle, and an inner bar inserted in each end, having a single tooth element, spring pressed radially outwardly, forming a buttress tooth engaging the buttress teeth in the main bar. The inner bars can be pushed inwardly, but must be threaded, or turned, out. The weights are fitted on the inner bar at each end, against the end of the main bar and a locking collar interlocks with the outer end of each inner bar, and holds the weights. The outer surface of the locking collar and of the inner bar lie in a common plane, defining the end of the dumbbell. The inner bars cannot be threaded completely out of the main bar, except by special manipulation of the tooth element in the inner bar, through an inconsipicuous opening.

  • Patent number: 4617703
Abstract: A device for tightening chains, cables or ropes is disclosed. Previously, turnbuckles or load binders, the latter operating on the principle of the lever, have been used to tighten two ends of a chain or cable around an object, or the ends of two chains which have been secured at their other ends. Such devices are hand-operated and accordingly can only apply limited tension to the chain or cable. The present invention provides a device whereby an air-gun or pneumatic wrench or other power tool can be used to tighten the chain or cable to much greater tension. The device utilizes a threaded bolt which is secured to one end of the chain and which, by the rotation of a threaded socket, is drawn through a sleeve to which the other end of the chain is secured, thereby tightening the chain.
