  • Patent number: 4576402
Abstract: A locking pipe sub is disclosed including a threaded pin connection for engaging, for example, a pipe stuck in a well bore. The threads on the pin are formed in two sections which are adapted to align upon initial make-up of the sub to the stuck pipe, but to misalign, both axially and radially, when reverse torque is applied to the sub. The result is to create axial and radial forces between the threads of the sub and the threads of the stuck pipe which positively lock the sub against disconnection from the pipe except with the use of a releasing tool.

  • Patent number: 4515439
Abstract: The invention contemplates use of a bayonet mount for microscope objectives, instead of the customary threaded mounting of such objectives. The bayonet mount is characterized by the objective (1) having a centering cone (3) which engages and precisely centers in a conical opening (10) in the turret of the microscope. The structure not only permits rapid changing of the objective, but the thus-mounted objective always assumes the same accurately centered angular position with respect to the microscope housing. Each objective can therefore carry exposed coded indicia, containing technical data concerning the objective, and the coding may be read by a reading device which is fixed with respect to the microscope housing. The code which is read for the objective indexed into working position may be used for aperture control in the microscope.

  • Patent number: 4459060
Abstract: A safety shear tool for series connection into a string of sucker rod, especially a fiberglass sucker rod, which includes two coacting members connected together to form a swivel means, and to also form a shear means, so that the tool acts as a weak link as well as a swivel means. The tool is series connected into the sucker rod string and preferably located near the bottomhole pump. When the pump malfunctions and causes the tension in the sucker rod string to increase to a value less than but close to the designed breaking strength of the sucker rod string, the members of the tool are released, one from the other, thereby parting the sucker rod at the tool rather than parting the sucker rod structure itself. The tool is easily reassembled for subsequent use downhole in the above described manner. The set tension at which the tool parts the rod from the pump is easily changed.

  • Patent number: 4386458
Abstract: Residual favorable stresses are induced in a zone of stress concentration in a coupling and connection joint mechanism of a drill collar or drilling tool, for example. The residual favorable stress is created by tensily stressing the material within elastic limits, relieving the stress in the zone by heating the material therein into a nonstressed plastic or liquid state, and releasing the tensile stress maintained in an area adjacent the zone. The residual force of elasticity in the area adjacent the zone applies the favorable residual stress in the zone. Preferably, the favorable residual stress is a compressive stress to resist fatigue failures from tension-induced cracks. The extent and depth of penetration of the favorable residual stress in the zone is controlled and is substantially greater than that available from mechanical cold-working surface-hardening techniques.

  • Patent number: 4258768
Abstract: An improved fastener assembly includes an externally threaded member or bolt having a thread convolution with a relatively long trailing flank surface and a relatively short leading flank surface. An internally threaded member or nut also has a thread convolution with a relatively long trailing flank surface and a relatively short leading flank surface. The nut is grooved to provide an expandable section. When the nut and bolt are tightened, the relatively long trailing flank surfaces of the thread convolutions cause the grooved portion of the nut to expand to completely fill a hole. The opposite end of the nut is contracted to clamp against a thread convolution on the bolt. In one embodiment of the invention, a relatively short leading flank surface of the bolt extends at an acute angle to the relatively short leading flank surface of the nut to provide clearance between the internal and external thread convolutions.

  • Patent number: 4252456
Abstract: A coupling device for container lashings comprises two tensioning members (1, 3; 11, 13) having coacting teeth (2, 12) and a clamping means (20) for keeping the members with the teeth (2, 12) in mesh. One flank of the teeth (2, 12) inclines at an angle (.alpha.) of between 95.degree. and 110.degree. to the tensional load direction (r) of the member. The other flank of the teeth inclines at an angle (.alpha.) of between 30.degree. and 50.degree. to the tensional load direction (r). The clamping means (20) is an eccentric clamping collar, surrounding the members (1, 11) in their toothed zone and in an open condition affording a clearance (s) between the top land planes of the elements (1, 11) in the same order of magnitude as the tooth depth (t) but in a closed condition the collar (20) maintains the teeth (2, 12) of the members in mesh. Each of the members have means (4, 14) against which a tensioning apparatus (30), e.g. a hydraulic tensioner can be applied.

  • Patent number: 4248544
Abstract: A coupling for tubular scaffolding including a boss mounted on a standard by a pin or by welding and a wedge ring rotatably encircling and co-planar with the boss.Radial insets in the boss combine with the ring to form apertures in which pegs are located, the pegs being attached to the ends of ledgers and transoms. The inner face of the wedge ring has sloping wedge surfaces in the vicinity of the apertures which alter the radial dimension of the apertures. Thus, when a peg is located in an aperture the wedge ring can be rotated to wedge the peg firmly in the aperture. The problem existing prior to the invention was the difficulty of securing ledgers and transoms. This has to be done by screw couplings or by getting above the coupling in order to tighten it. The coupling of the invention can be operated from below, i.e. by a person standing on erected scaffolding.
