Abstract: This invention provides a telescopic shaft in which a backlash or a sliding resistance in a rotational direction is maintained to a predetermined value even when there are fabrication errors in a male shaft and a female shaft, and a preload is not reduced even when a sleeve is worn by a friction force in sliding, and a steering apparatus having the telescopic shaft. An inclined sleeve portion 712 is pressed by an elastic deformation of an urge sleeve portion 713, so that there is not backlash between a male shaft 12B and a female shaft 12A and a predetermined preload is applied. Although an outer periphery of the inclined sleeve portion 712 is worn by a friction in sliding, the inclined sleeve portion 712 is further pressed by an elastic force of the urge sleeve portion 713 by an amount of wearing the outer periphery of the inclined sleeve portion 712. Thus, a predetermined urge force is always operated to the inclined sleeve portion 71.

The integral hollow type shaft is induction-hardened from the outer periphery to form a hardened layer, leaving an unhardened layer at spline portions, so that at the spline portions, the hardness on the inner surface will be lower than at other portions. • Patent number: 6705946
Abstract: A shaft coupling is made from carbon-carbon composite to achieve significantly higher temperature capability, combined with lubricity and high strength, allowing its use in hot, non-lubricated sections of gas turbine engines, where previously, these couplings could not be used. The coupler may be cylindrical for joining the facing ends of co-axial shafts is made from carbon-carbon composite with a female spline in a coupling bore and a male spline on the coupling outer surface. Variations of the torque carrying geometry include involute splines, circular splines, square drive, hex drives, serrations, or double-D drives. By fabricating the coupler from carbon-carbon (or carbon-graphite) composite, metallic shaft mating splines are provided with a coupler that has exceptionally high temperature capabilities (>2500 F.), high strength, and can be impregnated with graphite or other dry lubricants to reduce frictional heat generation and reduce spline wear.

  • Patent number: 6698076
Abstract: A method of fabricating a driveline assembly including the steps of inserting a first member within a second member, heating the first member to a temperature greater than that of the second member and inserting both members into a die. The inner surface of the die includes an interlocking torque transferring profile. Fluid pressure is applied to the inner diameter of the inner member to expand both members into the profile on the inner surface of the die. The inner and outer members are then removed from the die and cooled such that both members are at a common temperature. Because the inner member was at an elevated temperature, and thereby expanded a greater amount than the outer member, cooling of the members results in a clearance between the members that provides for relative axial movement between the inner and outer members.

  • Patent number: 6668952
Abstract: A removable shaft assembly having a drive shaft with internal splines defined therein and an output shaft positioned within the drive shaft and having a first set of external splines defined thereon adapted to engage the internal splines of the drive shaft is disclosed. The assembly further includes a cap axially aligned with the drive shaft having internal splines defined thereon which are adapted to prevent an axial movement of the output shaft relative to the drive shaft when the cap is in a first position and hallow axial movement of the output shaft relative to the drive shaft when the cap is in a second position. The output shaft may be removed from the drive shaft when the cap is placed in the first position by axially sliding the first set of external splines through the internal splines of the cap. A method of operating a removable shaft assembly is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6623202
Abstract: A driven tool includes a driven part which is rotatably driven by a drive part. The driven part and the drive part are coaxially arranged one inside of the other. The drive part and the driven part are conical as viewed in a longitudinal section plane containing the axis. The driven part includes driven teeth projecting generally radially with respect to the axis and received in respective radially-open recesses formed in the drive part. Each of the driven teeth makes contact with a wall of the respective recess at first and second contact places which are respectively situated on opposite sides of a generally radial line of symmetry of the driven tooth. The contact places are operable to transmit a drive force from the drive part to the driven part in respective directions of rotation. A driving angle in the range of −5° to +45° is formed at each contact place.

Abstract: A coupling, especially a torque limiting coupling, has a coupling housing (2) and an inner coupling member (10) received therein. The inner coupling member (10) connects to a drive shaft. Torque transmitting elements (12), active in the form of locking members, are positioned between the inner coupling member (10) and the coupling housing (2). The coupling housing (2) has a connecting bore portion (6) which receives a connecting portion (19) of a connecting element (18). The outer contour (10) of the connecting portion (19) follows the inner contour (9) of the coupling housing (2) in the area of the connecting bore portion (6). The connecting portion (19) is accommodated with a radial clearance. Thus, radial displacements, circumferential displacements as well as angular displacements are possible between the coupling housing (2) and the connecting element (18).
