  • Patent number: 5779383
Abstract: A braked universal joint assembly for rotatably joining two members is described wherein both load bearing and braking are performed by conical surfaces. The joint body comprises bores defining rotation axes, each bore comprising two frusto-conical sections. Rotation assemblies for nonrotatably engaging the joined members comprise a pair of brake cones, each having a frusto-conical section, and friction cones compressed between the frusto-conical sections of the bores and the frusto-conical sections of the brake cones. Rotation occurs by motion of the joined members and the engaged brake cones relative to the joint body. Load forces and braking torques are borne by the frusto-conical sections of the bores and brake cones and by the friction cones.

  • Patent number: 5389039
Abstract: A lubrication system is set forth for a universal joint. A cross of the universal joint has four trunnions extending therefrom along two mutually perpendicular lines. Bearing cups are rotatably received on the ends of the trunnions and the cups, in turn, are held by universal joint yokes. Lubrication passages extend from a central portion of the cross outwardly to cavities located at the ends of the trunnions. A passage extension extends substantially through each cavity from the lubrication passage toward the end of the trunnion. A lubricant retainer is of generally inverted U-shaped configuration and extends over the passage extension. The retainer has openings near the bottom of the cavity and is centered in the cavity by a flange on the passage extension or by an outer flange at the edge of the retainer. The retainer prevents air from being trapped in the bottom of the cavity so that the cavity will always be filled with lubricant.

  • Patent number: 5205789
Abstract: A modified jaw type shaft coupling has two opposed members arranged to allow limited flexure about a point that is the geometric center of mating spherical surfaces, a concave surface on one member and a mating convex surface on the other member. One member is attached to each shaft to be rotationally and axially coupled. The jaws on one coupling member have lugs that extend radially inward to axially entrap a larger flange attached to the other coupling member. The flange has notches to allow the flange to axially traverse the lugs. The flange is then rotated relative to the lugs to allow the flange to oppose the lugs. The flange is secured to the other coupling member after the coupling members are axially moved together to allow the jaws to interdigitate to provide rotational coupling. The convex and concave surfaces cooperate to accept axial compressive loads and the flange and lugs prevent axial separation.

  • Patent number: 5101681
Abstract: These joints are particularly useful for transmitting a flux (electrical, optical, liquid or gaseous) either entirely across the joint, or from one side of the joint to devices mounted on the joint itself that use such a flux. Such devices can, for example, be motors to drive the joint itself. The interlocking bodies are typically but not necessarily circular rings, mounted to a common internal structure that permits each body to rotate about its own axis. The resulting joints can rotate in all directions with a very high angular range--in most cases limited only by the angle subtended by connecting stems used to mount the joint to a base or to mount objects to the joint for motion. Some of these joints have hollow central enclosures for passing flexible wires or tubing to carry the flux, so that the flux can be transmitted across or into the joint with the same high degree of freedom, and yet without slip rings, brushes, or other expensive motionaccommodating components subject to wear.

Respective end pivots connect the intermediate parts to the end parts for pivoting thereon about respective axes that are perpendicular to each other and a central pivot connects the intermediate parts to each other for relative pivoting about a center axis lying substantially perpendicular to the end axes. One of these end axes is at least generally horizontal and at least generally aligned with the load.

Abstract: A yoke for universal joint is composed of a cylindrical coupling tube formed by pressing a metal plate and having a slit in a radial direction and serrate grooves on the internal periphery; a pair of flanges integrally formed at an end of the coupling tube and positioned on both sides of the slit; and a coupling arm formed by pressing a metal plate. One of the flanges has a screw hole, while the other flange has a hole, coaxial with the screw hole, for passing a bolt to be screwed into the screw hole. The coupling arm has a penetrating hole in the base portion, and mutually coaxial circular holes at its opposite ends. The yoke is assembled by fitting the other end of the coupling tube into the penetrating hole in the base portion, and connecting the other end of the coupling tube with the base portion of the coupling arm.

  • Patent number: 5004205
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for accurately positioning an object, such as a mirror 3 used to precisely aim a laser. The invention uses kinematic principles to hold the object. Here a 2-2-2 kinematic bipod system is employed. The invention uses three actuators 5 to position the object. Each actuator acts as a bipod restricting the object in two of its six degrees of freedom. Each actuator has three degrees of freedom it can transmit to the object. The actuator can rotate on its single-axis flexure 7 so that the actuator cna rotate on one axis relative to support 4. Each actuator has a two-axis coincident flexure 8 on one end for allowing the object to be moved in two rotational degrees of freedom and the roller sleeve 50 allows a third rotational degree of freedom. Each actuator is positioned circumferencially about the central coordinate axis of the object to be moved, 120 degrees apart.

Abstract: An improved device for quickly and reliably retaining a pair of bearing cups on a universal joint cross during purging and shipment thereof is disclosed. The retainer includes a central portion which is generally elongated and flat in shape. In a first embodiment, first angled portions are formed integrally with each end of the central portion extending outwardly therefrom. The first angled portions may be oriented at relatively small angles with respect to the central portion. Second angled portions are formed integrally with each end of the first angled portions extending outwardly therefrom. The second angled portions may be oriented at relatively large angles with respect to the first angle portions. The corners between the first and second angled portions are adapted to receive the outer edges of the bearing cups therein. Respective apertures are formed through the retainer at each of such corners to receive locating tangs formed on a mating yoke for the cross.

Abstract: A coupling device includes a first support member which is connected to the arm of a robot and which supports a second support member for precision universal tilting and axial and/or rotary movement from an aligned normal position. The second support member supports robotic tooling, and a set of springs or springs and ball members or fluid actuated piston bias the support members to the normal position. An electrical control circuit is effective to stop movement of the robot arm in response to minute tilting or axial or rotary movement of the second support member in the event the tooling or article carried by the tooling is accidentally hit or overloaded. A set of semi-circular rings and auxiliary springs are attached to the support members for producing a substantial biasing force towards the normal position, and a set of construction balls and corresponding seats are used to establish a precision normal position.
