  • Patent number: 5573351
Abstract: A trench liner system used for lining a single containment trench and for forming a dual containment trench from a single containment trench comprising a primary liner means within the trench supported by a separating means between the primary liner and the trench walls and bottom, and a means for holding the primary liner means and the separating means to the trench walls. The separating means comprises a plurality of pairs of elongated members disposed along the trench such that the rear surface of each elongated member is in contact with one wall of the trench and the underside surface of each member is in contact with the bottom of the trench. The elongated members are in opposed relationship to each other. The length of the lower portion of each elongated member is less than one-half the width of the bottom of the trench so that a gap is formed between the distal edges of the lower portions to position therein a means for detecting a leak in the primary liner.

  • Patent number: 5573350
Abstract: A method for cutting first and second complementary foamed plastic bodies of a predetermined shape from a single workpiece includes the step of moving a linear cutting element through the workpiece. The linear cutting element, such as a heated wire, is moved through the workpiece to form a first surface which forms a portion of the predetermined shape of the first and second foamed plastic bodies. The workpiece is thereafter shifted in position relative to the linear cutting element and the linear cutting element is again moved through the shifted workpiece to form a second surface. Due to the shifting of the workpiece, the first surface is sloped relative to the second surface. The first and second foamed plastic bodies are preferably first and second trench forms defining the shapes of different sections of a trench drain which has a continuously sloped bottom surface.

The grate attachment fixture includes a rotatable connector adapted to adjustably interconnect the locking bar and the grate. The grate attachment fixture also includes a grate securing member affixed to the locking bar. The grate securing member includes a pair of adjustment surfaces including a positive engagement surface for engaging a portion of the connector such that upon rotation of the connector in a first angular direction, the locking bar initially rotates within the trench in the first angular direction until the first locking bar engages the opposed sidewalls. Thereafter, the positive engagement surface cooperates with the connector to apply a tensile force between the grate and the locking bar upon further rotation of the connector.

  • Patent number: 5518336
Abstract: Drainage gutters for installation in the ground are known which comprise a gutter body at the upper edges of which are integrally cast frames into which a cover can be placed. As they are installed in the ground the drainage gutters are sealed from the ground along their upper edges by means of first sealing devices. To produce a watertight seal between each two drainage gutters that abut one another by their end faces, second sealing devices are provided. These sealing devices each comprise grooves that can be filled with a sealant. The known drainage gutters are not completely watertight with respect to the ground. It is proposed to provide connecting channels between the first and the second grooves, so constructed that the sealant of the first sealing devices can be introduced so as to be continuous with the sealant of the second sealing devices by way of a complete or integral transition region.

The two relatively flat sides or panels of the tube are separated from each other by a plurality of pairs of cuspations, which project inwardly from the panel surface. Cuspations from the opposing panels are secured to one another thereby providing increased structural integrity.

Abstract: A drainage system for location adjacent a pavement subbase includes a tube of a geotextile fabric supported by a self-sustaining water-porous plastic support. An end of the fabric tube and its encased support are compressively received in the flared open end of an outlet connected to a conventional drainpipe. The outlet includes a plurality of projections which trap the fabric tube between the support and the outlet, so as to securely retain it therein. The outlet also preferably includes a plurality of circular beads over which a corrugated drain tube can be frictionally slipped. Alternatively, the outlet can be configured as a flat union or T-shaped junction joining one or more upstream fabric tube-and-support filters with a downstream outlet constructed from an identical fabric tube and support. The downstream outlet can also be in the form of a union for connecting two or more upstream fabric tube-and-support filters in addition to having means for connecting to a drainpipe or the like.

Abstract: An elastomeric sealing device to prevent ingress of surface fluids into holes, principally drains which are characterized by non-watertight covers or grilles with either regular or irregular topographic boundaries. The device comprises a three-part construction, including a top film, a core elastomer having minimal shear strength, and a bottom film. When in use, the device conforms to contour of adjacent hole covering device and fills existing crevices and voids, thereby providing an efficient seal. When removed from hole, device recovers neutral shape thereby being suitable for re-use on same or different hole.

  • Patent number: 4808024
Abstract: A method for inhibiting roadbed erosion and damage to roadways utilizes an underdrain system for removing water which causes such damage. Underdrains in the form of perforate pipes, preferably covered with a geotextile sock as a filter, are disposed transversely to the lengthwise direction of the roadway in close proximity to faults, cracks, joints and other fissures in the roadway. The underdrains conduct water away from such fissures thereby preventing roadbed particulate material from being pumped upwardly through the fissures together with water which collects below the concrete roadway. Such an installation is highly useful for preventing further damage to existing roadways, and may be installed without interrupting traffic or destroying the road surface by means of a pneumatic underground piercing tool.

  • Patent number: 4789116
Abstract: Landing deck for aircraft, in particular for helicopters, on seagoing vessels and offshore installations, such as platforms. When fuel is leaking from a helicopter after an accident, as for instance an unsuccessful landing, a fire often starts. In order to reduce the combustion intensity and the duration of such a fire continuous grooves or channels (8) are formed in beams of steel or metal, of which the deck is made, in the surface facing upwardly. Thereby fuel which has leaked out will be collected in the grooves or channels. The air supply to the grooves or channels is poorer than the air supply to fuel situated on decks without grooves or channels, and the combustion intensity, therefore, is reduced. Moreover, the combustion takes place on the surface of the liquid, and it is possible to drain a substantial part of the fuel without ignition thereof. Fuel may be collected from the grooves or channels by means of a collecting manifold or gutter.

  • Patent number: 4764051
Abstract: An apparatus and method for cutting grooves on the edges of an already formed road. Each of a plurality of toothed cutting wheels revolves about a substantially vertical driving shaft. Simultaneously, each cutting wheel (attached to a respective rotary shaft) revolves about its own longitudinal and substantially horizontal axis. The apparatus is moved along a road, near an edge thereof, thus giving rise to one linear motion and two rotary motions. Sequentially, each cutting wheel enters an edge of the road from a region beyond the road edge, due to a slight tilt of the plane which contains the cutting wheel rotary shafts. The resultant grooves are deepest at the road edges and then gradually diminish to zero depth, the grooves being arcuate and parallel to each other. With the plane containing the cutting wheel shafts completely horizontal, the apparatus can cut rain drainage grooves in a raised marking strip on the road or can remove bumps from the road.
