Abstract: Disclosed herein is a system and method for computer assisted driving of vehicles. The system disclosed herein provides an array of sensors positioned in the vehicles at strategic points for capturing vibrations and sound induced, when the vehicles move over pavement surfaces marked with predefined patterns of peaks and troughs. The sensors further measure frequencies of these vibrations. An onboard computer on the vehicle matches the captured frequencies and sound against pre-specified frequencies to obtain unique frequency signatures for the segment of the pavement traversed by the vehicle. Navigational data and geographical data associated with the unique frequency signature are used to provide assistance in driving of vehicles.

Abstract: A line marker carries a spray nozzle assembly for marking or painting a line on a horizontal surface. The spray nozzle assembly includes a mounting bracket that is clamped to a support arm in various pivotally adjusted positions. The mounting bracket carries both the spray nozzle and a pair of side shields. The spray nozzle is vertically adjustable up and down on the mounting bracket. The side shields have slides that slide transversely through the mounting bracket to provide horizontal adjustability of the side shields towards and away from one another. A clamping plate bears against the slides of the side shields when the clamping plate is tightened on the mounting bracket to hold the side shields in place on the mounting bracket.

Abstract: A self-propelled road milling machine includes a chassis (2) housing a rotatable milling roll (4) between lateral plates (12,13) disposed orthogonal to the axis of the milling roll (4). The milling roll (4) has a base body (14) and a milling tube (10), and is driven by a drive device (6) mounted on an exterior of an input-side of the lateral plate (12) by a reduction gear unit (8). The lateral plate (13) provides for exchanging alternatively mountable milling tubes (10) of different milling widths by being easily detached. For milling near an edge, a reduction gear unit (8) is mounted on the input side, and the reduction gear unit (8) is mounted on the interior of the input-side lateral plate (12) whose outer surface (25) forms a seat for milling tube elements that can be slid thereon from a non-driven side.

Abstract: A line marker carries a spray nozzle assembly for marking or painting a line on a horizontal surface. The line marker has a hydraulic circuit which includes a reservoir for holding marking liquid therein and a tank for holding water therein. A pump can pump marking liquid through the spray nozzle during a marking mode of operation or water through the spray nozzle during a flush mode of operation. In the marking mode, at least some marking liquid is recirculated back through the reservoir to help keep the marking liquid in the reservoir agitated and mixed. In the flush mode, water is blocked from entering the reservoir and is recirculated back into the water flow from the tank. In the clean out mode, the hydraulic circuit is operated as if in the marking mode, except that the reservoir is rinsed with an external source of water with the rinse water circulating through the hydraulic circuit and back to the reservoir.

  • Patent number: 7066680
Abstract: This application relates to a method of forming an inlaid pattern in an asphalt surface. The pattern may be selected for functional or decorative purposes. In one embodiment the method comprises the steps of providing a first template having a predetermined pattern; impressing the first template into the asphalt surface when the asphalt surface is in a pliable state to form an impression therein; removing the first template from the asphalt surface to expose the impression; providing a second template having a predetermined pattern matching the pattern of the first template; inserting the second template into the impression; and fixing the second template in position within the impression to form the inlaid pattern. The second template may consist of a preformed thermoplastic grid having a color and/or texture contrasting with the asphalt surface. In another embodiment the second template may include a light source for illuminating the template after it has been fixed in position.

  • Patent number: 7040837
Abstract: A self-propelled road milling machine is equipped with a cooling system comprising a fan for drawing in air, a cooler, and a suction channel. The suction channel has a vent opening facing the cooler and an intake opening. In relation to the longitudinal axis of the road milling machine, the intake opening points to the side of the road milling machine, so that air is drawn in from the side. This results in significantly less dirt being sucked into the machine than when the suction channel is positioned in the direction of travel. In a preferred embodiment, the suction channel is formed in one piece with a liquid tank of the road milling machine. The liquid tank and suction system therefore form a modular unit, which can be easily installed on the chassis of the road milling machine.

The steering gear includes a console, on which a steering wheel is positioned. One end the console is fastened laterally to the chassis, while the other end of the console is not attached to anything. The console extends over the floor plate, forming an opening between the floor plate and the console on a side. Since this opening is below the console, it is possible for the operator to observe the road surface without having to lean to the side, as is necessary with conventional road milling machines, in which the side of the chassis on which the console is positioned blocks the view.

  • Patent number: RE40505
Abstract: A cutting head is provided for milling rumble strip depressions in a road surface. The cutting head has a center rotational axis and a transverse diameter that varies along the length of the rotational axis so that an outer cutting surface of the cutting head defines a plane curve, such as an ellipsoid with truncated ends. The cutting head is mounted on a milling machine and rotated about the rotational axis as it is moved alternately up and down into the road surface. As the milling machine moves down the road, the movement of the cutting head creates spaced apart rumble strip depressions in the road. Because of the elliptical configuration of the cutting head cutting surface, the dimensions of the depressions can be varied along both the forward and lateral axes by simply varying the depth of cut. The curved profile of the cutting head along the rotational axis creates rumble strip depressions that avoid the sharp ninety degree corners and vertical side walls found in conventional rumble strips.
