Resiliently Biased Clamp Jaw Patents (Class 407/109)
  • Patent number: 11583942
Abstract: In a cutting tool rotatable about a tool axis, a reversible cutting insert is removably secured in a tool body. The cutting insert has opposing top and bottom end surfaces interconnected by a peripheral surface, and a median plane located therebetween. The peripheral surface includes four side surfaces alternating with four corner surfaces, the side and corner surfaces intersecting the top surface to form top major cutting edges and top corner cutting edges, respectively. Each side surface has a median surface and a top major relief surface. Each top major relief surface forms an acute internal top major relief angle with the median plane, and the median plane intersects the four median surfaces to define an imaginary median square. In a top end view of the cutting insert, the four top major cutting edges define an imaginary top major square rotationally offset from the imaginary median square.

The recess has a top surface with a curved portion, a bottom surface with a curved portion, and a fixed stop surface. The insert has a top surface with a curved portion, a bottom surface with a curved portion, and a stop surface. The curved portion of the top surface of the insert and the curved portion of the bottom surface of the insert are curved such that they abut against the curved portion of the top surface of the recess and the curved portion of the bottom surface of the recess, respectively, when the stop surface of the insert abuts against the fixed stop surface of the recess. The present invention also relates to a cutting tool kit, a cutting insert and a method for positioning an insert relative to a toolholder.

Abstract: A cutting tool assembly (14) including a tool holder (20) having a removeable clamp (20a). A cutting insert support blade member (16) is removably held in the tool holder by the clamp (20a). The cutting insert support blade (16) includes at least one, preferably two, insert receiving pockets (30). The pockets (30) are defined by a body portion (16b) and a clamp portion (16a) joined together by an integrally formed resilient or deformable portion (16c) which permits slight resilient movement between the clamping and body portions to facilitate the installation of a cutting insert (18) in a pocket. When the insert support blade (16) is mounted in the tool holder (20), the clamp inserts clamping forces to the clamping portion (16a) of the insert support blade which serves to secure the insert support blade to the tool holder and exert clamping forces on an insert (18) held in the pocket.

Abstract: A holder includes a seat which removably carries a cutting insert for chip removing machining. The seat can be widened by the manual application of a force to enable the insert to be replaced. The force is applied by a manually actuable key which includes a shaft and an expansion mechanism mounted on an end of the shaft. The expansion mechanism includes a plate which is mountable to the holder in a manner enabling a projection pin of the shaft to enter a slot which constitutes an extension of the insert seat. The portion of the pin entering the slot has an out-of-round cross sectional shape. By rotating the shaft relative to the plate, the pin rotates to widen the slot, and thus to widen the seat. Rotation of the shaft relative to the plate is terminated after a predetermined amount of rotation, in response to mutual engagement between stop surfaces disposed on the shaft and the plate, respectively.
