Adjustable Relative To Cutting Edge Patents (Class 407/3)
  • Patent number: 6394709
Abstract: A cutting insert is clamped in a pocket of a holder by a top clamp assembly which includes a clamp arm screwed to the holder, and a clamp plate interposed between the insert and a front part of the clamp arm. The clamp plate is formed of a harder and more wear-resistant material than the clamp arm and transmits clamping forces from the clamp arm to the cutting insert. The hard clamp plate shields the clamp arm from being impacted by chips generated during a machining operation, thereby minimizing wearing of the clamp arm.

  • Patent number: 5704734
Abstract: A metal cutting tool assembly (1) having an automatically adjustable chipbreaker (23) is provided that comprises a cutting insert (11) for cutting a relatively rotating workpiece, a holder (3) for holding the insert (11), an insert driver (5) for applying a cutting force between the insert (11) and the workpiece, a chipbreaker (23) having a surface (27) that is effective in breaking chips (55, 56) of different thicknesses when positioned at different distances from the cutting edge (19) of the insert (11), and a mounting mechanism (30) for movably mounting the chipbreaker (23) onto the holder (3). The mounting mechanism (30) includes a spring (50) for automatically adjusting the distance between the chipbreaking surface (27) of the chipbreaker (23) and the cutting edge (19) of the insert (11) in response to the forces applied to the chipbreaker (23) by the metal chips (55, 56) that result from the cutting operation.

  • Patent number: 4400116
Abstract: A cutting tool which includes a mounting shaft and a chip breaker positioned on the mounting shaft. A cutting plate is supported between the mounting shaft and the chip breaker, with a clamping jaw being positioned on the chip breaker. A clamping screw is releasably held in the cutting tool mounting shaft for holding the clamping jaw and the chip breaker against the tool mounting shaft. The clamping screw has a longitudinal axis and an outer portion which is situated externally of the clamping jaw. A spring is provided for urging the chip breaker against the clamping jaw. The clamping jaw and the chip breaker have interengaging teeth on their surfaces which are oriented towards one another. The chip breaker further includes a throughgoing aperture through which the clamping screw passes. The throughgoing aperture is enlarged to form an elongated opening for permitting lateral movement of the chip breaker transversely to the longitudinal axis of the clamping screw.

  • Patent number: 4271734
Abstract: This invention relates to an apparatus for guiding a continuous chip formed in lathing. The apparatus can guide the chip smoothly without jamming caused by, for example, curling of the chip so as to prevent the finished surface of a workpiece from damaging and reduce idle time due to dealing with the jammed chip. The apparatus has a guide member mounted on or integral with a cutting tool. The guide path is provided in the guide member for passing the chip, and the guide path has an inlet in the vicinity of the cutting edge of the cutting tool and an outlet remote from the cutting edge. The guide path is inclined, at its inlet portion, with an angle substantially equal to the flowing direction of the chip. The shape and dimension of the guide path may be varied in accordance with the nature of the chip. A detector may be used for detecting the smooth operation of the continuous chip or for detecting the jamming of the chip around the inlet so as to stop the operation.

  • Patent number: 4201501
Abstract: A cutting tool with a holder and a removable insert that has a flat positioning surface and a cutting edge located in the plane of said surface. The insert is carried in a slot of the holder, with the positioning surface of the insert clamped against a locating surface of the holder that in part forms the slot. The locating surface of the holder orients and locates the insert and, hence, the cutting edge in a plane that remains unchanged after the cutting edge is sharpened by grinding and lapping the positioning surface of the insert. Where the cutting edge is formed in a tip or bit of diamond or other cutting material different from the insert, the tip or bit need not be removed from the insert and reset for grinding or lapping. In use, the insert is clamped to the holder intermediate its ends and contact with the locating surface is restricted to spaced areas on opposite sides of a clamping screw.
