Abstract: A technique having superior efficiency for manufacturing a bevel gear forging die is presented. In the present invention, raw material is machined by means of a radius end mill, manufacturing a bevel gear forging die 10. In recent years, it has become possible to use radius end mills to form complex shapes from raw materials having a high degree of hardness, owing to the fact that NC construction devices and their controlling programs control the deployment of radius end mills, and due to the improved accuracy of the radius end mill itself. By improving the process path of the radius end mill, the inventors have succeeded in creating a process whereby a radius end mill can be used to cut a bevel gear forging die 10 having a side face, a base face, and a diagonal face.

Abstract: A spherical cutting tool such as a ball end mill, a tapered ball end mill and the like is disclosed, in which cutting edges are formed on a spherical surface. The tangential lines of the respective points of the cutting edges on a spherical surface are made to have a constant (helix) angle relative to the axis of the tool. A tooth can be formed with an eccentric relief, and the tooth reinforced with a smaller relief angle and a wider land width. Therefore, the tool can be operated at a higher feed rate, thereby making it possible to improve the machining efficiency.

Abstract: A drill bit capable of axial cutting as well as side cutting, having a generally cylindrical elongate body with a bit diameter, includes a frontmost drilling end for axial cutting, a cutting section extending from the drilling end for side cutting, and a shank extending from the cutting section. The cutting section is helically cut at a helix angle of substantially 15°±2° to form one pair of diametrically opposite helical flutes whose outermost edges are sharpened to form respective cutting edges, arranged around a solid central core whose diameter is substantially directly proportional to the bit diameter. The length of the cutting edges in the axial direction of the drill bit body is calculated according to the formula: Cutting Edge=Bit Diameter×&pgr;×Cc/Tan (Helix Angle), Cc being a constant in a range from 0.85 to 0.90.

Abstract: An improved solid cemented carbide ball nose end mill is provided which enables a cutting of a quenched or hardened difficult-to-machine material without any chipping or break of edge under the condition of a high speed and high load cutting. The improved end mill comprises a substantially semi-spherical ball nose portion provided with such cutting edges as to form a virtually S-shaped symmetrical configuration as viewed from the tip end and a tool body integral with said ball nose portion and having a peripheral cylindrical portion being provided with no peripheral cutting edge and a shank at the rear end thereof. The cutting edges extending from the tip end of the ball nose portion to the respective terminals positioned at the furthest at the vicinity of the border between the ball nose portion and the tool body are formed in the ball nose portion only. Preferably, each of a rake angle and a relief angle of the cutting edge is set between 0.degree. and -10.degree., and between 6.degree. and 16.degree.

  • Patent number: 6053670
Abstract: In a modular system (10), with a holder part (12) for clamping in a spindle of a turning machine and a machining tool (14) attached interchangeably to this, the machining tool (14) has a hollow cylindrical shaft part (18) which overlaps a receiving mandrel (20) on the holder part (12) and is fixed to the holder part (12) by means of a screw device (28, 30) mounted on the holder part (12) and generating a tension or compression force via a tension or compression rod (22) running through the holder part (12) and the receiving mandrel (20). The end of the tension or compression rod (22) facing the machining tool (14) is expanded and under the effect of the tension or compression force leads to an expansion of the receiving mandrel (20) such that the peripheral surface (42) of the receiving mandrel (20) and the inner surface (44) of the shaft part (18) are clamped against each other to form a friction connection.

  • Patent number: 6048140
Abstract: A high-speed end-milling router for ramping entry into a workpiece has plate-like hard metal cutting inserts fitted in pockets milled in chip gullet surfaces to present the insert at a desired axial rake angle and with radially inwardly and outwardly facing cutting edges. Each insert is secured in its pocket by two countersink headed machine screws whose holding power against centrifugal dislodgement of the insert is reinforced by an interfitting boss integral with and upstanding from the seating surface of the pocket extending into a blind recess molded in the undersurface of the insert.

  • Patent number: 5971671
Abstract: To increase the sturdiness and precision of a double-edged milling cutter having a single cutting tip, the cutting tip is inserted in a recess of a milling cutter body, with the recess being constituted by two spaced-apart opposite sidewalls. One sidewall is designed as a rigid sidewall. By way of a cavity extending transversely of the longitudinal axis of the milling cutter body, the thickness of the other sidewall is locally reduced across the entire width thereof, so that it is "elastic". The cutting tip is fixed between the two sidewalls by means of a mounting screw.

Abstract: A cutting insert for mounting in a cutting tool, comprises a cutting head portion with a substantially arcuate cutting edge and a substantially trapezoidal mounting body portion integrally formed therewith. The mounting body portion has substantially planar upper and lower surfaces and substantially straight side surfaces converging in the direction away from the cutting head portion. The entire cutting edge of the cutting head portion lies on a sphere and defines an arc substantially less than 90.degree., the cutting head portion having an imaginary chordal plane passing through peripheral ends of the arc. The side surfaces of the mounting body portion are directed substantially radially with respect to a center of the sphere and are substantially shorter than the length of the chordal plane.

  • Patent number: 5915888
Abstract: The present invention relates to a rotary cutting tool assembly comprising a combination of a single ball nose cutting insert of a generally elongated configuration. The ball nose cutting insert is fixed into a holding body provided with a slot adapted to securely and non-movably hold the insert. The single ball nose cutting insert has at least one fill ball nose cutting end having a cutting edge of a continuous spiral fluted configuration. The fill ball nose cutting end comprises a cutting face consisting of two radius cutting edges meeting at a center or tip of the full ball nose cutting end forming a web. The cutting face forms a true helical path made of a continuous curve following a spiral shape, and helix angles of the radius cutting edges are between 3 to 45 degrees with respect to a longitudinal axis of the ball nose cutting insert in both right and left directions.
