Abstract: Holes are drilled into work pieces which are inconvenient to be mounted in a conventional machine shop drill press. Walking of the drill bit is controlled by an alignment guide 40 placed at the surface of the work piece which axially stabilizes the drill bit while it rotates. Downward axial force is applied to the drill bit by a screw action which translates rotational force applied by a wrench into an axial force. The device may be affixed to the work piece by clamping or spot welding. Downward axial force is applied by way of a pair of threadably engaged cylinders 42, 44. The outer cylinder 42 is integral with a plate 32 which is affixed to the work piece. The inner cylinder 44 has a portion 46 where rotational force may be applied. When the inner cylinder 44 is caused to rotate, the rotational force is translated into axial force by the threaded engagement of the inner cylinder 44 with the outer cylinder 42.

Abstract: A method for cutting an opening in the side of a pipe carrying gas under pressure, providing a bypass through the cut, and terminating the bypass when the pipe has been repaired, and apparatus for performing steps of the method. A branching saddle is bonded to the pipe, and a fixture is mounted on the pipe at the saddle. The fixture comprises a barrel through which various tool-insertion assemblies may be inserted. The tool-insertion assemblies typically include a shaft carrying a tool on one of its ends, a driving hub affixed near its opposite end, and a sealing plug slidably mounted axially on the shaft between the tool and the driving hub. The tools enter into the fixture's bore through a tool inlet, into which the sealing plug of the insertion assembly is screwed for a pressure-tight fit. The tools are individually inserted, in succession, through the fixture's bore and through the wall of the pipe.

  • Patent number: 5054179
Abstract: A water faucet valve removal and insertion tool includes a handle and a self-tapping threaded rod attached to the handle. There is a sleeve coaxial with the threaded rod and threadedly engaged therewith. The sleeve includes a rotational stop which is formed and adapted to interact with a water faucet valve. The threaded rod functions to form an internal thread in the stem of a water faucet valve to thereby attach the tool to the valve. The tool can be used to remove an installed water faucet valve or to insert a water faucet valve within a faucet housing. In either event the tool is attached to a water valve by the threaded rod and uses the rotational stop to turn an installed faucet valve or to turn a valve during insertion for proper alignment thereof.

  • Patent number: 4902174
Abstract: An apparatus for tapping live pipes includes an adaptor for affixing to a pipe, the adaptor including a valve for closing off any opening cut into the pipe. The internal drive shaft has a plurality of transverse apertures spaced apart along its length, so that it can be adjusted longitudinally to different positions with respect to the apparatus which grips the drive shaft and urges it toward the pipe during cutting. This avoids the necessity of designing a plurality of apparatuses which are adapted to cutting bits and devices of different lengths.

  • Patent number: 4578004
Abstract: An apparatus for punching a hole in a paper web, in particular for the production of liquid packs, has a movable punch which can be pressed against a counter-plate and which has a circular blade at its tip. In accordance with the invention, to permit the desired hole to be punched into the packaging material to the desired depth, using simple means, the punch has a rotationally driven cutter head. Due to the rotary movement of the punch or the blade-forming edge at the tip of the punch, the blade is no longer merely pressed into the paper web, as in previously known punching apparatuses, but in accordance with the invention it is rotated perpendicularly to the pressing movement, giving a cutting effect as when using a knife.

  • Patent number: 4501519
Abstract: A tool couple which is used with a manually-operated threading die to aid in cutting the initial threads on a pipe or bolt. The device is used to force the anterior cutting edge of the die firmly against the outer, unthreaded surface of the workpiece at the outset of a threading operation. The die is kept wedged, as the initial threads are being cut, between the workpiece and a rotatable member of the tool couple so that the die cannot slip backward toward and merely chamfer the leading edge of the workpiece. To keep the die so wedged, the rotatable member is advanced by means of a shaft in the direction of the end of the workpiece at approximately the same rate as the die is moved along the longitudinal axis of the workpiece. Usually only one revolution of the threading die, assisted by the tool couple, is required to establish the starting thread.

  • Patent number: 4405267
Abstract: A threading device comprises a longitudinally adjustable, C-shaped frame configured with mounting heads at its open ends, the heads being arranged to interchangeably mount a collet for supporting a rod or pipe to be threaded and a threaded die guide shaft mounting a thread cutting die, the pipe or rod and the die guide shaft being secured by set screws so that their confronting ends are in aligned abutment with each other intermediate said mounting heads. Rotation of the threading die on the guide shaft moves the die onto the pipe or rod to form precisely arranged threads on the latter.

  • Patent number: 4331410
Abstract: The tool includes a mandrel on which is seated and axially held an exchangeable milling cutter, coupled to the mandrel by a clutch drive ring for shell end mill arbors, for transmitting the torque during the milling procedure. In addition, a stop element is mounted on the mandrel, held against an axial displacement, but permitting relative rotation of the mandrel for operating the cutter, whereby particularly a thrust bearing is used between the mandrel and the stop element. The stop element is adjustable and limits the longitudinal movement of the cutter. To prevent any damage to the chamfer-area around the housing-bore hole by the cutter, the stop has to be adjusted accurate to the gauge, in reference to the cutting edge geometry of the cutter teeth, so that just a thin blade of material of the outer ring lip remains. The whole device is centered with the mandrel in the bore of the bearing or bushing which is to be removed after cutting one ring lip.

  • Patent number: 4114483
Abstract: A portable boring tool for refinishing the seal ring seats on ball valves is provided with a base plate which is mounted on top of the valve. A housing is supported by the base plate in a manner that permits linear movement of the housing. The housing contains gearing for transmitting motion from an input shaft above the base plate to a cutter assembly drive shaft below the base plate. The cutter assembly drive shaft rotates an automatically indexing cutter head assembly to cut successively smaller circles of material from the surface being refinished. A handwheel and feed screw arrangement is provided for moving the housing and cutter head assembly along a linear path. A micrometer is provided for limiting the depth of cut to be taken into the surface being refinished.

  • Patent number: 4082473
Abstract: Manually operable tool means includes a frame formed at one side with an apertured work piece holder, and at an opposite side with an internally threaded shaft housing in which is adjustably mounted tool supporting means and a tool element. The tool element in the form of a drill, for example, while engaged with a work piece supported in the holder is turned by means of a spring loaded handle. The tool supporting means consists in a tubular adapter sleeve which is in threaded engagement with the internally threaded housing, and which is provided with a pressure-transmitting collar against which the handle engages. The tool shaft is rotatably mounted in the adapter sleeve and has the tool element detachably secured at one end. A range of pressures may be exerted through the tool element while cutting by varying the angular position of the handle against the collar as the tool is manually turned.
